Flexibility is a critical component used largely for workplace effectiveness. Organizations are using it as a tool to improve recruitment and retention, management of workload, and employee diversity. Providing flexibility also shows improvement in employee engagement, job satisfaction, and stress reduction. Employers, who not only encourage but also empower their employees to use flexible work schedules as well as simultaneously affording the opportunity to advance in the company, employees, and employers gain a predisposition to profit. Human Resources are using flexibility as an organizational strategic asset. This provides a considerable competitive advantage to companies who are aware they need to adopt rapidly to market changes. A flexible organization uses a specific or a combination of available scheduling strategies. “In May 1997, more than 27 percent of all full-time wage and salary workers in the United States – about 25 million – had flexible work schedules that allowed them to vary the time they began or ended work. The proportion of workers with such schedules was up sharply from the 15 percent recorded when the data were last collected in May 1991 and from the 12.5 percent tallied in 1985. The increase in flexible work schedules was widespread across demographic groups, occupations, and industries, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor (1998, June 1)”. Flexible work arrangements originally derive from flex time that plainly means sliding time. Sennett compares the flexibility of a human being to that of a tree, whereby, the tree has the capacity both to yield and to recover, from both the testing and the restoration. * Theoretically, a flexible person ought to have the same tensile strength as the tree. One is to adopt the standards or norms of the industry and the other is to deviate from them. For Zara, obviously, it was the latter. I thought Zara’s rapid fire supply chain management was a bold move, cost and effort-wise, and was unconventional with relation to its peers, but it has given the company its competitive advantage. Yes Zara acted against the normal production cycle, but the good thing was that the company sustained this supply chain system, definitely made adjustments to it through the years, and now the company is reaping its benefits. When an employee is hired at a new company, there are several security measures that are already in place in order to keep their personal information private and/or confidential. According to the Canadian Human Rights Commission Workplace harassment "involves any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you...Serious one-time incidents can also sometimes be considered harassment." (Canadian Human Rights Commission, 2013) If left uncheck accusations of workplace harassment could potentially put a business in trouble with the regulatory agencies. In the workplace, employees experience sexual, gender, and racial/ethnic harassment. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has developed recommendations and guidelines as a way to reduce the occurrences of workplace harassment. On the other hand, employers also a responsibility to put in place “best practices” for employees to follow to ensure a safe work environment for everyone. Intervention is needed because persons who experience harassment have a hard time fight back. Because laws on workplace harassment are not sufficient to punish harassers. The act of workplace harassment/violence on the job is considered a legal and ethical issue. Cooke and Sara L. Mann This paper examines whether flexible work schedules in Canada are created by employers for business reasons or to assist their workers achieve work-life balance. We focus on long workweek, flextime, compressed workweek, variable workweek length and/or variable workweek schedule. Statistics Canada’s 2003 Workplace and Employee Survey data linking employee microdata to workplace (i.e., employer) microdata are used in the analysis. Results show that more than half of the workers covered in this data have at least one of the five specified types of flexible work schedules. Employment status, unionized work, occupation, and sector are factors consistently associated with flexible work schedules. Personal characteristics such as marital status, dependent children, and childcare use are not significantly associated with flexible work schedules, and females are less likely to have a flexible work schedule than are males. Overall, results suggest that flexible work schedules are created for business reasons rather than individual worker interests.
