A b s t r a c t

An electric battery is a device consisting of two or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Each cell has a positive terminal, or cathode, and a negative terminal, or anode. The terminal marked positive is at a higher electrical potential energy than is the terminal marked negative. The terminal marked positive is the source of electrons that when connected to an external circuit will flow and deliver energy to an external device. When a battery is connected to an external circuit, Electrolytes are able to move as ions within, allowing the chemical reactions to be completed at the separate terminals and so deliver energy to the external circuit. It is the movement of those ions within the battery which allows current to flow out of the battery to perform work. Although the term battery technically means a device with multiple cells, single cells are also popularly called batteries.
There are many ways to construct a battery, as well as ways to control its generated output. Almost any liquid or moist object that has enough ions to be electrically conductive can serve as the electrolyte for a cell.
This homemade battery is based on two different metals suspended in an acid solution. You’ll need two different kinds of metal, like copper and zinc nails and some acid liquid. The copper is the + and the nail is the -. The electrons travel from the – through the vinegar (acid) to the + and creates an electric current.

Objective:

This study aims to find out that vinegar can be an alternative battery. It is considered as a renewable source of energy because it can be naturally replenished. This is also considered as a environmental friendly because it does not contain any toxic that is hazardous and dangerous to human’s health.

Hypothesis:

When the copper wire and a galvanized nail are inserted in a plastic container of vinegar, the vinegar molecules interact with the metal atoms on the surface of the strip (copper wire and galvanized nail). At the interface between the vinegar and the galvanized nail, some of the metal nuclei are attracted to the negative side of the vinegar molecules. This attraction makes it easier for a galvanized nail nucleus to leave one or more of its electrons behind in the metal strip, and migrate away from the copper wire into the vinegar. If one metal strip has more extra electrons than another one does, those electrons will flow from the galvanized nail to the copper wire. The electrons then will flow through the wire, creating an electric current to light the LED.

Materials:

Vinegar
Plastic container
Zinc coated nails (or strips of aluminum foil)
Copper Wire
Connecting Wires
LED Bulb
Digital Multimeter

Procedure:

1. Prepare all the materials needed.

2. Place the vinegar inside the small plastic container. Make sure that it is deep enough to suspend the copper wire and galvanize nail on it.

3. Cut piece of copper wire and suspend it into the vinegar inside the plastic container.

4. Take a galvanized nail metal (galvanized means that it is coated with zinc) and suspend it into the vinegar inside the plastic container. Don’t let the wire and nail touch each other. We now have a Vinegar Battery.

5. Get the Multimeter, connect it to the first container at the positive wire connector to the copper and have the negative wire connector connected into the galvanized nail. Record the voltage generated.

6. Create a second battery and wire the batteries in series. Wire the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the second battery. Use the multimeter to measure the voltage of the two batteries touching the remaining unwired terminals.

7. Create a third battery and wire the batteries in series. Wire the positive terminal of second the battery to the negative terminal of the third battery. Use the multimeter to measure the voltage of the three batteries touching the remaining unwired terminals.

8. Create a fourth battery and wire the batteries in series. Wire the positive terminal of the third battery to the negative terminal of the fourth battery. Use the multimeter to measure the voltage of the four batteries touching the remaining unwired terminals.

9. To light the LED bulb connect the positive end of the LED to the copper terminal and the negative end to the nail.

Vinegar reacts/interacts with the copper wire and galvanized nail causing the electron to flow through the wire to light the bulb.

As you wired the four vinegar battery in series it increases its volts capacity. Hence, the more vinegar battery you connect in series will glow the LED brighter.

Conclusion:

Vinegar battery can easily done because it uses household materials and therefore can save more money. Voltages were measured to find out if there were improvements or changes when the numbers of vinegar batteries were increased. Like other batteries, connecting two cells in series will give us a larger amount of voltage.

Therefore we conclude that vinegar battery can be one of alternative batteries.
