Reading Strategies Worksheet

Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term.

• Long-term reading goal: Expand my vocabulary, so that I can read more effectively.
• Short-term reading goal: Learn how to retain information better.

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

• How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course?

When I do my weekly readings for this course I tend to first find a quiet place that is free from distractions. Then I read a chapter at a time, highlight the information I feel will be on a test or that I need to study, and then I take notes. After I have completed those steps, I like to review my notes. I also frequently read the chapters over again so I can refresh my memory on the subject. Taking these steps to learn the information will ensure that I am prepared for future tests. Also, reviewing my notes and chapters helps me retain the information much better.

• How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time?

After I read this week’s chapter, I have learned several tips and strategies on how to read and study more effectively. Some of the suggestions I will incorporate into my study time is previewing, mapping, flash cards, using the questions at the end of each chapter as a study guide, and using credible sources to research more information on a subject. Using these strategies will help me concentrate, understand what I am reading better, help prepare me for tests and quizzes, and have a solid plan for active reading. I feel more confident in taking on school. Having good study habits is important to get through school successfully.

• How might this plan help you accomplish your reading goals?

One of my goals is to expand my vocabulary, so that I can read more…...

...Associate Level Material Appendix E Collaboration Worksheet Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • What are the advantages of having diversity in a collaborative learning environment? I like being about to talk to different people all over the world and hearing their experience. I think that is really helpful in the learning world because I don’t feel like I’m talking to made up people, its actually real life and real problems and real success. It also makes it a challenge to have a conversation because when you write something and someone writes back you feel compelled to do the same and it actually makes you think about the question and it’s not just home work anymore. Its meeting new people and bettering yourself as a person and bettering your communication skills. • How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration? Well I think that work style affects collaboration more than any of the others, because some people work better by just doing the work and not having to collaborate with other people. I had to get use to speaking with the other students. I have noticed that some of the other students are old and feel that they have to be in the parent roll and I sometimes have to bit my tongue because I don’t live with my parents I don’t want someone being bossy like my mother while I’m trying to learn. The diversity , I think it helps because it introduces us to people all......

...Associate Level Material Appendix B Goal Setting Defining Goals Goals are outcomes or results an individual wants to achieve in a stated period of time. Goals require prioritized steps for successful achievement and must align with an individual’s priorities. Misaligned goals often lead to unfulfilled outcomes. Putting goals into writing and reviewing them daily allows the goal setter to more effectively visualize the accomplishment of the goal. Goals can be set in various areas of life, such as career, personal development, family, friends, finances, health and wellness, leisure time, physical environment, and spirituality. Goals can also span a variety of time periods. Some goals can be long-term: 3 to 5 or more years. Others are midterm: 1 to 3 years. Still others are more immediate and short-term: 1 to 12 months. Benefits of Goal Setting Creating goals provides structure and purpose for personal, academic, and professional activities. Individuals who use effective goal-setting strategies report that they experience less stress and anxiety, concentrate better, perform better, and are more satisfied in their work and personal lives. SMART Goals For goals to be effective, they must include action words that explicitly describe the desired outcome. Effective goals also include the following SMART elements: • Specific: Specify, in detail, exactly what is to be accomplished. Vague goals do not provide enough structure for achievement. In addition,...

Suppose you are an event coordinator for a large performance theater. One of the hottest new Broadway musicals has started to tour and your city is the first stop on the tour. You need to supply information about projected ticket sales to the box office manager. The box office manager uses this information to anticipate staffing needs until the tickets sell out. You provide the manager with a quadratic equation that models the expected number of ticket sales for each day x. ( is the day tickets go on sale). a. Does the graph of this equation open up or down? How did you determine this? The graph (parabola) opens downwards. This is because the leading coefficient, that is a is negative. b. Describe what happens to the tickets sales as time passes. If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not? When reading the University Of Phoenix Student Code Of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity there was not really anything that surprised me. Throughout my work life and life in general I have become accustom to guidelines like these. For the most part, it is basically common knowledge. The individual sections may have been worded different but all follow the same basic concept. The Code of Conduct and the Code of Academic Integrity explain to us what acceptable behavior is and what is not accepted. All in all these rules and guidelines are in place to maintain a safe and productive environment. • What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community? I learned that being an ethical learner requires honesty and dedication. When it comes to learning we need to make ethical choices and not deceitful ones. No matter if someone is failing or falling behind, dishonesty and cheating never should have a place in school. This is not only about your academic career but also your character. The instructors are very knowledgeable and make you feel right at home. The courses are flexible as far as time frame goes. In the Associates program I have two courses to complete per semester. The resources available are somewhat simple, but very easy to find and are very informative. I had no problem navigating my way around the website. There are many styles of presentations each week to enable you to complete your assignments. The library is one of the best tools I have ever seen. You will be able to search on your subject, and then filter just the data you need. ...Associate Program Material Appendix F Quoting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing a Source Part 1: Summarizing Review the following passage and summarize it in the box as though you were including this information in a research paper. Use the reference to create an appropriate APA-formatted, in-text citation. Aggressive driving is characterized by the tendency to view driving as a competition rather than as a means of getting from one place to another. Although most drivers are content to move along with the flow of traffic, aggressive drivers weave from lane to lane, seeking any advantage that will place them ahead of others. Aggressive drivers are also more likely to tailgate and honk the horn in an effort to intimidate other drivers or simply to move them along faster. When confronted with heavy traffic, aggressive drivers often engage in dangerous behavior such as passing on the right, using utility or turn lanes as driving lanes, and ignoring traffic signals. Paradoxically, aggressive drivers often pride themselves on their skill. They see other, more cautious drivers as the problem, not themselves. Reference: Arlov, P. (2007).
