Guns on Campus

...Guns on College Campus Should guns be allowed on college campus? Kenton L. McGowen Abstract This paper will determine whether guns have a place on college, and school campuses. The conclusion that the paper reaches is that students who have guns will be tempted to use them, especially at universities and colleges that are full of drug use, stress, and anxiety. The mixture of guns into a formula like that is simply not conducive to a safe environment. This paper will take evidence from experts, as well as state rulings to show the two sides of gun control in regards to school campuses in order to answer the question: Should guns be allowed on college campuses? The constitution of the United States guarantees our right to bear arms in order to defend ourselves, but where does the line fall where it is ok and not okay to carry weapons? The debate has shifted from restaurants, to stores, and now to schools. It is recently that the question has come up, should college campus students be allowed to have guns? The question is a safety issue and mostly centers around a need for the preservation of life on these campuses, and whether or not the guns are absolutely necessary to have. It has been spurred on by the recent slew of school shootings that have hit areas of the country, most notably Virginia Tech in 2006. There are valid argumentative points to both sides, however. As previously mentioned, the constitution of the United States......

Campus Events

...Kurt Smith AL -301 Section 1 February 11, 2013 Campus Event Paper For my campus event of my choice I wanted to choose something that was appealing to me. I wanted to find something fun that I would enjoy instead of something that I didn’t care about and would have been bored with. When I heard of the Mardi Gras event that was going to be held on campus I knew I had to take advantage of that and check it out. The event was held this past Thursday in front of the university student union building and was quite a popular event to say the least. I attended it as soon as I had finished practice, and before I even got there I heard the music from a long ways away. I would say the main reason why I chose this event is because it sounded like something fun. Being an outgoing person looking to always have a fun time, this seemed right up my alley. Another reason also is because I’ve never attended a Marti gras event before. I had an idea what to expect but I didn’t know exactly what was going to be happening. It was definitely a very social event, when I first got there I had to wait in a line that probably had fifty people in front of me. This was definitely a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. One thing that I liked right off the bat was the music they were playing. I was surprised that the school allowed them to play rap music that is recent that I have heard on the radio. So to me it wasn’t as much as a school event feel, as it felt more...

Campus Creche

...According to Campus Creche, they have five individual centers for different aged children. They have basic vision/plan that they use in common but also each center has an individual style and age appropriated programs and curriculums. They seem to understand that each stage of child’s development, there are things that are important to learn and develop. For example, children aged from 3 to 18 months need to build trust so it is important to help babies to feel settled and happy in a safe and secure environment. They also do not have exactly same routines. They seem to be very flexible and try to follow individual child’s rhythms, which I believe is ideal way to respect and encourage children to be independent. Lastly, Campus Creche has an assessment process that caters for each child, which helps them plan and enhance child’s learning. There will be observing and planning based on each child so I believe they will gather more information based on individual child, which will be beneficial for both the child and teachers. According to Katz, Dispositions are frequent and voluntary habits of thinking and doing. These habits of mind are not to be confused with mindless habits, such as stopping at a red light (Katz 1993). Also children are environmentally sensitive which means they are acquired, supported, or weakened by interactive experiences in an environment with significant adults and peers. For example, if the teacher has developed value play disposition, she would......

Concealed Campus

...4 December 2015 Fostering a Concealed Campus In 2007 during the Virginia Tech Shooting, a boy’s best-friend’s brother was there, in one of the classrooms that the gunman targeted. He escaped but this information gave him chills. That boy’s name is Jeff. Why is it that issues don’t matter until a horrifying story has a personal connection to its readers that it causes them to fully gasp the situation? There are many alternatives to students carrying weapons on campus. Advocates for guns on campus say that it will make the environment safer, but in reality only the students and faculty can make a campus safer. If someone sees something, they should say something. Responsibility is the first method of defense, not guns. There are over 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States, the majority of these do not allow students or faculty to carry guns on campus. The states that allow students and faculty to carry firearms on college property are Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin. Only Utah and Colorado have explicit laws about allowing concealed firearms on campus, but leave the ultimate decision up to schools to decide whether to allow guns on campus or not. Twenty other states allow schools to decide on allowing guns of any type on campus. This leaves students confused where they can and cannot carry firearms across America. In 2001, the U.S. Department of Education conducted a study that determined that the homicide rate at......

A Campus stay back on campus to prove a point in entrepreneurship. Originally from Madhya Pradesh, Amit, who passed out in March 2011, has been staying back at the student's hostel for the past one year to run High Octane, a boutique cafe-food court- bookshop combine, which has been a big hit with the students and faculty on the campus. Buoyed by the success of the plush outlet, Amit is currently in talks with banks and consultants to roll out a cafe chain on campuses and educational institutions in other parts of the country. Amit has also been advising many current students on starting new enterprises. "I was the coordinator of the entrepreneur cell on the campus in my final year and we used to hold regular events and talks for fostering entrepreneurship among students. I had always wanted to start something on my own ever since my college days. It was a private talk with a Harvard professor who visited the IIM-K campus for a guest lecture series which really stirred me to take the plunge," Amit said. Though he initially toyed with many project ideas, the cafe- bookshop-food court combination emerged as the most viable project as there was a huge demand for such a place on the campus. "Our idea was to create a place which the campus community could relate to and think of as their own. I did not want to open just another cafe but a place which was in sync with the campus mood," Amit reminisced. The IIM-K authorities also responded positively to the campus start-up......
