...customer base to support the practice, it is an easy place to defend against competition from.  Certainly a lot easier than being Dell or HP, who struggle with operational efficiency to compete on price, and try to innovate within a very narrow window defined by their platform. Apple’s success at selling high-end products has secondary benefits for the rest of the ecosystem.  Because the products are expensive, they tend to be purchased by people with more disposable income. So the segment of the computer market which buys Apple products self-selects to be very attractive demographic for many other reasons.  Advertisers love to get their products in front of people who are more-willing-than-most to buy something expensive / unnecessary / fun. Similarly, app developers know that if they write an app for iPhone / iPad, the peoplewho are able to buy it are much more likely to be willing to pay a couple bucks for something silly than, say, somebody who bought the cheapest smartphone they could afford because they felt they really need that functionality.  I had previously speculated that Apple’s platform play required a very large distribution base to attract developers, which is not quite correct.  The strategy is successful even with a relatively small market, provided that the market is segmented properly.  Which in this case it clearly is....

Why Sex Is Fun

..."Why is Sex Fun? is the best book on the subject I've read. This lively exploration of our sexual heritage offers fascinating reading for anyone curious about why lovers do what they do." -Diane Ackerman, author of A Natural History of the Senses "I am so jealous of Jared Diamond, for he writes with such an elegant simplicity! Here, he takes a loot at the endlessly fascinating topic of human sexuality His convincing arguments should persuade xm that there are very special reasons why we evolved to use sex for recreation as well as for procreatim whereas most other mammals are denied that pleasure.... It is a great little book, by one of the worlds foremost biological philosophers." -ROGER Shohl Professor of Physiology Monash University Australia "Once again Jared Diamond provides us with answers to questions we may never have stopped to ask, but wish we had. In this long essay Diamond explains that recreational sex, while not unique to humans, is a rare behavior in the animal world. Above all, we learn, sexual activity divorced fron procreation is not only part of what it is to be human, but the very crux of our evolutionary success." -Bettyaxn Kevles. author of Naked to the Bonn Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Centnty The Science Masters Series is a global publishing vonture consisting of original science books written by leading scientists and published by a worldwide team of twenty-six publishers assembled by John Brockman. Fun in the Sun

...Fun in the Sun? Being in the sun can cause skin cancer. Then why do we keep sunbathing, when it is dangerous? That is a really good question! We humans love a good tan, it makes us stand out a little, and look different from the others. It also means that you have done something different than lying at home on a couch. You have been outside and maybe did some activities. When you think you look a little better, you get satisfaction and more confidence, and everybody loves that. All these things sound great! So why aren’t we all doing it? Well, then there is also all the cons. And the cons are bad. Really bad. So bad that it kills many people every year. It can give Sunburns, skin damage, eye damages, cancer, etc. And in worst cases that can lead to death, and that happens. Then it’s very important that you remember to use sunscreen. If you don’t remember sunscreen your skin can be harmed, and you can get cancer, and cancer is lethal. Sun screen has a huge impact on how your skin tolerates the sun’s rays, due to its neutralization of UVA rays and UVB rays. UVA rays is what makes us look older, they make wrinkles. UVB rays is what cause sunburns. But not getting any of the UVA or UVB rays is inevitable, it’s only when you are getting too many it is dangerous. I personally love being outside and enjoying the sun. I can lay back and enjoy life, with an ice cold coke. But of course I TRY to remember the sunscreen, without that I would get a bad sunburn, and that has......

...law consisted of three main points. Advocating delayed marriage and delayed child bearing, advocating fewer and healthier births, and advocating one child per couple. (Wang 1995:34) Immediately after the policy was enforced, infanticide was introduced. How could a couple murder their child just because it was a female? Gender played a huge role in the Chinese culture. Males were definitely the dominant sex and a family without a male child was looked down at. The Chinese tradition implied that there must be a boy among the children in order to continue the family. They felt that the males carried the name of their ancestors and they needed to carry the name for the next generation. Therefore, whenever a couple had a female child they reverted to infanticide. They would either abandon the child or even worse, kill it. This way they had another chance at getting a boy. As technologies advanced, they were able to determine the gender of the child before birth and used abortion as a means to eliminate a female birth. These wide uses of infanticide obviously arouse some issues. The sex ratio was totally unbalanced and the infant mortality rate was horrible. Males were completely dominant in China. They did most of the work and were the head of the household. The one concept that the Chinese people are not considering is that in the future there will be far too many males and far too less females. Sure, the one-child policy will reduce the population growth rate, but it might......

Fun at Work

...Organizational Behavior Introduction The American Heritage Dictionary defines fun as “a source of enjoyment, amusement or pleasure”. Imagine working for a company for more than 40 hours a week with a team of introverts. This may sound great to individuals who may have found refuge in isolation, but it comes at a cost for the company. Hodge-Cronin & Associates conducted survey of 737 CEO’s. The survey revealed that 98% of this group “preferred job candidates with a sense of humor to those without” (Rau-Foster, 2000). Can fun really make that much of a difference? Can fun make a company rank #1 for best company to work for? Dr. David Abramis has been researching and studying the topic for years now. “He’s discovered that people who have fun on the job are more creative, more productive, better decision-makers and get along better with co-workers. They also have fewer absentee, late, and sick days than people who aren’t having fun” (Rau-Foster, 2000). Explanation CNN Money has ranked Google as #1 for the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 2013. Why is this? In 2006, Genentech a company that makes medicine that fights cancer, was ranked #1. Employee’s working for Genentech stated, “What’s better than being a valued member of a cancer-fighting team? Having a great time while you’re at work” (CNN Money, 2006). This company had a 5 percent turnover rate and 20 percent job growth. Now remember the year 2006! Google was on the bottom of this list in 2007. This leaves...

Unexpected Fun

...Unexpected fun It was the summer of two-thousand and six, the best week of that year. Summer school would be out soon, I was looking forward to it since the beginning of the school year. My girlfriends and I had so many adventures planned for the summer; missing one would be like a mission on grand theft auto left uncompleted. One day, I arrive home from summer school angry at the world since my mom forgot about me at the bus stop. When I get home, I over hear her talking on the phone saying, “oh yes go ahead and reserve Dennis a plane ticket too.” Like if I was not angry enough, she decides for me that I am going on vacations to Mexico with my aunt and my cousins, for a whole month! I still remember how mad I was. I kept telling her “well mother your spending money on a plane ticket for nothing, because I’m not going.” Finally, they convinced me to go to Mexico with the promise that if I absolutely hated it, they would buy my plane ticket to return home. The first week there I couldn’t take it, it was the middle of summer and it was raining. We had nothing to do, all we did was sit in the room where we would sleep and look at each other. I decide that the next day I was going to call my parents. I bought a pre-paid card and I did just that. “Mom, I hate it here. You told me to try it out and I did.” Since they had promised me a plane ticket back home, I was convinced that soon I would be back in lovely California. Finally, it stopped raining and later that night......

Remember that bungee-jumping thing we tried?” Kenny responds, “Edna was out a long time with that knee problem. She sure is a good sport. Keith said we were lucky not to get sued for that. Do you think employees could sue us if they are hurt on product-test assignments?” “Let’s ask Tony,” Norton suggests. “That guy you hired as— what did you call him—director of human resources?” Kenny smiles broadly, “Yep. He sure seems to be busy. He’s pulled together all that paperwork for insurance and retirement that Edna used to handle and named her compensation and benefits manager.” “He wants to send Joe and Eric to a supervisor’s school for work scheduling, job team assignments, and project management,” Norton adds. “He started those picnics by the LAGOON for people to talk about work conditions and issues.” Kenny asks, “Do you think we should let him hire a full-time secretary? I thought Edna could do that, but Tony said she has a full plate. Did you tell him to do that employee bulletin board he tacked into the Web site?” Norton shakes his head no. “Me neither,” Kenny muses. “Wonder why he did that? Guess we’d better talk to him.” Questions: 1. Which of the......

Writing for Fun

...Research Writing can be Fun Remember the last time your teacher asked you to write a research paper on a subject of your choosing? You probably groaned and grimaced, wiped your sweaty brow, and gasped. Relax. Take a deep breath. This paper will show you how writing for a research paper assignment can not only be done easily, but be fun! Fun you say? How? First, pick a topic that you know something about. Do you like looking for sea shells when vacationing on the beach with your family? Skateboarding at the local park? Playing video games with your friends? Baking with your mom? Making money shoveling snow for your neighbors? Playing soccer or hockey with your team? Reading books? Riding your bicycle? I think by now you get the idea – choose something that you already know a little something about and enjoy. The next steps is to research that topic. So let’s take the example of collecting sea shells on the beach when vacationing with your family. You can approach the research from several angles. You can research the specific types of shells that are located in a specific region. You can research the area where you found the shells. Fun Home

... Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, appropriately sub-titled 'A Family Tragicomic', is a graphic novel style autobiography that revolves around the story of her complicated relationship with her father, and the realization of her own homosexuality. It is complex, intelligent and insightful. The story develops through the interweaving of Bechdel's memories of her childhood and the realizations she is able to make in hindsight. Bechdel challenges the concepts of gender roles, sexual orientation, and most importantly fatherhood through her own stories so that they may take on a deeper meaning in the end. Ultimately the question she aims to answer is: why am I am who I am? Secondary to this inquiry are related questions: how does a closeted gay father affect his daughter’s future homosexuality?  Growing up, Bechdel and her father both struggled with gender roles. Bechdel's refusal to grow her hair long and her reluctance to wear dresses, skirts, or jewelry were the opposite of her father's preference for the effeminate; gardening, decorating, wearing fine creams and colognes. On page 96 the author reveals that her older cousins called her “Butch”, a nickname that reflected her success at acting masculine. To her ‘Butch” was the “opposite of sissy… it was clear to me that my father was a big sissy” (page 97). As a child Bechdel was acutely aware of the breech in conventional gender roles that occurred between her and her father and she resented it, even stating on page 96 that......
