... Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction Learning can be immensely gratifying, but studying usually involves hard work. The primary step towards effective study habits is to face up to this reality. One need not feel guilty if one doesn’t look forward to studying. Once an individual accepts the premise that studying doesn’t come naturally, it should be apparent that one needs to set up an organized program to promote adequate study. Learning how to study is really a long-term process. As one goes on studying, one finds more techniques and methods that offer new information leading one on an interesting and successful direction. So, learning how to study or to develop good study habits is a lifelong process, and one should be ready to modify one’s method of study according to the need of the time. The development of good study habits is the highway to the goals of an individual, whatever they are. A simple, small change in study habits makes a big difference in goal setting and organization of one’s life. The success of an individual depends upon his study habits. Education is the manifestation of perfection already existing in man. The tool enabling this manifestation is study habits. In order to improve the quality of education we must develop certain innovative strategies, which will enhance the educational standards. In addition to that from the student’s side there must be some important steps, which form the basis for their academic achievement. Students’......

Effective study skills are associated with positive out comes across multiple academic content areas and for diverse learners. The purpose of this article is to describe an information-processing perspective on the contribution of study skills to academic competence, and to identify evidence-based strategies that are effective in helping students to improve their study skills. Study habit, skill, and attitude inventories and constructs were found to rival standardized tests and previous grades as predictors of academic performance, yielding substantial incremental validity in predicting academic performance. We found that study skill inventories and constructs are largely independent of both high school grades and scores on standardized admissions tests but moderately related to various personality constructs; these results are inconsistent with previous theories. Study motivation and study skills exhibit the strongest relationships with both grade point average and grades in individual classes. Academic specific anxiety was found to be an important negative predictor of performance. In addition, significant variation in the validity of specific inventories is shown. Scores on traditional study habit and attitude inventories are the most predictive of......

...promote aspiration to enroll in nursing schools and to explore factors that deter aspiration to enroll in nursing schools. Methods: The study was exploratory cross sectional using both qualitative and quantitative methods and was conducted in Azania and Jangwani secondary schools in Ilala district. The sample size included 50 male and 50 female students who were opting for Physics, Chemistry and Biology from form III to form VI in the above mentioned schools. Results: Awareness above 50% for males was 79.2% (95%CI: 66.6, 91.8) while that of females was 76.9 % (95% CI: 65.4, 88.4). Awareness below 50% was 31.4% (95%CI: 8.4, 54.4) for the males while that for females was 31.1% (95% CI: 11.3, 50.9). Non awareness was mostly about nurses being capable of independent practice, making decisions for themselves, working with high technology, following physician’s orders without questioning and feeling good about what they do. Factors that were pointed out included: social, economical, educational and individual perceptions of different students. Although students were aware of nursing, they did not want to opt to join the profession. Conclusion: This study has shown that students are at least aware of the profession but they do not want to opt for it due to the image they have of it from the public. The factors that have been addressed in this research have to be put in consideration if at all we are to increase the nurse patient ratio in Tanzania. 12 The Dar-es-salaam Medical......

...learner. Since the Philippines is gearing up toward the K to 12 program, much preparation is needed. According to Fairhurst and Fairhurst (1995), many teachers are familiar with other learning theories. One theory describes learners as auditory, visual or kinaesthetic. Howard Gardner (1983), describes learners as verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, spatial, musical interpersonal and intrapersonal. These theories are valuable in helping teachers recognize and respond to differences in learning styles. However, like most available learning theories, these theories focus primarily on the student’s learning process without taking into account the needs and skill of the teacher. Related Studies About Study Habits

...The first Study Habits Inventory (SHI) was prepared in 1933 by Wrenn, with a view to survey this feature among students. In 1935 research workers interested in the improvement of study habits, they paid attention to the discovery of effective study techniques and tried to improve study skills and habits of work through ‘how to study’ courses and other systematic procedures. Cuff (1937) carefully derived study-habits inventory and found that it aids in finding the pupils in need of special guidance and helps to identify remedial work for the good and bad study habits of individual cases. Brown and Holtzman (1955) constructed a questionnaire to survey students ‘study habits', as well as their attitudes and motivation towards academic work. Items were compiled from group interviews with good and poor students, existing inventories on study habits, studies using observational and interview techniques and reports on related experiments in the field of learning. Scoring keys based on validity studies in ten colleges were developed. Study habits basically consist of effective methods of study (Sorenson, 1954). Study is the total of all the habits, determined purposes and enforced practices that the individual uses in order to learn. Study is hard work, no easy substitute is available (Armstrong, 1956), Brown and Holtzman (1956) and Srivastava (1967) point out that for good academic success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Some reports stress that certain personality......

The kind of study habits they have shows the differences or improvements in how they become skilled and earnest about learning new things. ...comes along with really knowing your subject matter. At the same time, though, there are many temptations when one sits down for study regardless if one is a high school or college student.(Sarah Donaghy, 2006) Study habit is a technique or a strategy used every time a person is studying. Some students would have the same study habit or may have a different one. Based on the researchers’ point of view, it depends on whether a specific study habit is effective for them. Students may use different kinds of techniques. For example, a student may study better when he/she is alone and without any distractions while some may study better if with group or if with some music. Others would learn better visually or auditory etc. These techniques or strategies may help to have an effective learning and studying. Beginning college is an exciting step toward a brighter future. ...in Davao for my studies in college, I became very busy. With all I had been struggling with I'd been having a great deal of trouble sleeping. Then I remembered God. The most amazing sense of peace came over me. I decided to go to church tomorrow and have another try if I could still bring back my life just like before. Sunday came, I was already in church, I prayed to Him wholeheartedly and said, “ Lord, I am not happy of life. I wanna be brought back to you, Lord. Every morning I wake up, I eat, go to school, mingle with my friends and have a sleep. It became a routine, Lord, in which I am entangled to do it for a success my family is hoping for my future. I wanna be changed, Lord. I want to serve you again just like before. The closeness we had, Our laughs, smiles and everything, Lord.” as I left the church, I had this peace in which I couldn't do anything but just to smile. Monday came, I found myself in our room. I was sitting in my chair when one of my classmates came to me and invited me for a YOUTH RELOAD. It was its anniversary and I wasn't in myself to say 'no' for it. The invitation was something incredibly powerful. I didn't know that was God's plan to draw me back to Him. When the day came, I was something excited about it. I even dressed appropriate for a party 'coz I thought it was going to be a party where some people are gathered to have fun, with a well-known band on the stage. I was absolutely wrong. It was a RELOAD of the good news about Christ's......
