Racial and Ethnic Groups xxxxxxxxxxxx ETH/125
February 11, 2011 xxxxxxxxxxxx Although I am Italian American I do not know much about my heritage. This had been a delightful learning experience finding out where I am from, how my ancestor got here and why they came. I have always had interest in my heritage and finding out more about Italian American culture but have not had the time. I have been forced to find information and research about who I am and I could not be more delighted. Christopher Columbus and Giovanni da Verrazzano were the first Italians to come to the New World and make discoveries. Columbus did the majority of his discoveries in what is now known as South America in the 1490’s, while Verrazzano sailed to North America in the early 1500’s. He landed in present day North Carolina and ventured up the coast to New York, Cape Cod, Maine and Nova Scotia. Both of these men are recognized for their accomplishments through National Holidays, statues, landmarks, and artifacts displayed in museums. They both were trying to find a passage to the east to make it easier to get needed spices and supplies for their country, but found that there voyages were unsuccessful. They returned to their countries and told of their discoveries. They did not stay in the Americas and colonize because they were in look for something that they did not find, the east passage, and there intent was to return to their home land. (Meehan, T. 1912). Italians stayed in their country for quite some time after Columbus and Verrazzano’s discoveries. Over the decades Italy was stricken by poverty, disease, violence, and natural disasters making it very hard for anyone to get ahead and make their lives better. Lack of insurance, more than any other demographic or economic barrier, negatively affects the quality of health care received by minority populations. Racial and ethnic minorities are significantly less likely than the rest of the population to have health insurance. They constitute about one-third of the U.S. population, but make up more than half of the 50 million people who are uninsured (HHS 2011). Unfortunately, it has a negative impact on the U.S. healthcare delivery system. Primary care is the most important part of the health care system. In all conscience, one could see discrimination even in animal kingdom. Animals have likes and dislikes based on factors like age, body confirmation, etc. Now, we as humans develop discrimination which appears to be granted by nature to us. ...Religious and Ethnic Groups The Jehovah’s Witnesses are native to the United States with roots dating back to the teaching of Charles Taze Russell, a minister in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the 1870s. The religious beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses are in some ways similar to those of orthodox Christians, but in other ways that are different. Witnesses believe in one God, the authority of the Bible and focus on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They reject the doctrine of the Trinity and the existence of Hell. They stress the fact that God has revealed his personal name to humanity, which is Jehovah. Jehovah has a spirit body and lives in heaven, but sees all things. Jehovah Witnesses disagree with the mainstream Christian belief that Jesus was “fully God, fully man.” Jehovah Witnesses consider themselves as true Christians, but most mainstreams. Christians do not agree that they are. The feeling is mutual; however the Witnesses deny that other Christian groups are Christians. Miller III ETH125 August 23, 2010 Maria Kithcart Ethnic Groups and Discrimination Most African Americans are descendants of Africans that were enslaved by Europeans and American slave traders. Slave markets used in Africa to sell prisoners of war by African states. The Europeans used these slave markets to exploit and expand the shipment of slaves to the New World or America. Some ancestors immigrated to the United States from the Caribbean. The first group of African slaves was brought to the United States in 1619 (Slavery, 2003). These slaves were labeled indentured servants, which are workers under contract to an employer in exchange for their lodging, food, and clothes. Most of the colonists used the Blacks on plantations because other groups did not want to work on them and the Blacks were easier to control. All colonies eventually legalized slavery passing laws that would keep the slaves and their children for life. During the Revolutionary War, slaves and free slaves were allowed to fight against the British. As evidenced by the exploits of colonialism in Rwanda, the Hutus and Tutsis, two people from the same region in Africa with shared language and customs became the target of such exaggerated and contrived differences. Accordingly, the colonizers effectively constructed ethnic divides, constructed and reinforced differences in social cognition and social perception through repressive means. Even as they did so for the purpose of colonizing the nation and ultimately the minority the Tutsis, these efforts in cognitive reconstruction inspired tragedy. In fact, it led to unintended nevertheless grave consequences, which extended for decades. The Ethnic group conflict that caused problems was the problem in Rwanda East Africa between the Hutus and the Tutsis. According to Langford (2002), in 1994 the Rwandan genocide took place with more than 800,000 people slaughtered. Over the course of 100 days there were a half of a million people killed which is 20 percent of the country’s population. It was a long hold ethnic competition with the minority Tutsi, who had power and control over the country for centuries and the majority Hutu people who became rebellious in the early 1960’s.
