Q1. Understanding human behavior is critical to organizations – discuss the benefits of self evaluation/self assessment as it relates to leaders today.

Understanding human behavior is critical to managers at all levels inside any

organization. Individual managers within the organization can especially benefit

from conducting self-evaluations. It is essential for managers to be self -ware and

understand how their own behavior and personality can give them a better

perspective while working with others. Being self-aware allows one to recognize

and improve their strengths and weaknesses in order to maximize their leadership

In Organizational Behavior, Robins & Judge (13th Edition) tell us that organizational

behavior is the knowledge gained about individuals, groups and the effect of

structure on behavior in order to make organizations work more effectively. A

major goal for any organization should be to work more effectively and to

continuously make improvements, this is summarized by the Japanese Philosophy of

Kaizen. For an organization to strive to continuously improve the leadership and

management must adapt and learn. There are many ways in which a manager can

strive to improve and one of those is through self-evaluation.

What is a self-assessment or evaluation? Daniel Goleman (2000. Page 80) tells us

that an accurate self-assessment is a “realistic evaluation of your strengths and

limitations” . A manager conducting a self-evaluation can evaluate and assess many

aspects of themselves and their professional performance over a specific period of

time. They could look to assess their goals/targets, competencies and their behavior.

It can also encourage them to become mindful of areas where they need to develop

or improve.

There are several ways in which…...

Benefits of Selfassessment of Leaders

...Q1. Understanding Human Behavior is critical to organizations - discuss the benefits of self evaluation/self assessment as it relates to leaders today. Effective leadership is one critical aspect for organizations today. Pursuing high levels of effective leadership, leaders need to measure their skills and capabilities against different leadership dimensions. This will help leaders to spot dimensions that need enhancement and others that need development. This paper will discuss the benefits of leader’s self-assessment of different dimensions with focus on those related to understanding human behavior. Self Assessment Techniques: Different techniques of self-assessment have been developed. As (Clawson, et al., 2000:4) stated ‘There are many theories about the elements that make up leadership’ hence self assessment technique differ in terms of leadership dimensions measured. Another factor is the methodology used for each technique. Among the different techniques one can identify the Leadership Steps Assessment (LSA) developed by (Clawson, et al., 2000)Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), 360 assessment and many more. LSA will be considered as a sample in this paper. Leadership Steps Assessment (LSA) LSA models the leadership using six dimensions, which defines the components of leadership which, as (Clawson, et al., 2000:4) proposed were: 1. Clarifying one’s center. 2. Clarifying what is possible. 3. Clarifying what others have to contribute. 4. Supporting others so......

My Self- Competency Assessment as a Leader

...My Self-Competency Assessment as a Leader I have heard it said that one is born a leader with inherent leadership skills. I have witnessed how my close friends have been nominated yearly and voted as class officers. But this pattern ended when we graduated nursing school and went into different fields. New leaders have emerged amongst us with some starting as charge nurses after only a couple of years in practice. This redefined leadership in a whole new perspective. I would say now that a leader can be developed over time. The qualities of a good leader are something that can be learned and developed. The competent leader is a product of her experiences and how she responds to them. This will be my guiding principle as I plan my career path in the years to come. I have only been a leader in my current job for 6 years. I thought I knew a lot about my work and my organization. But until today, I can say that the American Association of Critical –Care Nurses (AACN) Nurse Manager Skills Inventory was an eye opener that I am not close to where I want to be. I learned that although my strength is The Art domain, there are still some subsets that challenge me to move towards the expert level. I have been on a consistent competent level on The Leader domain but not confident enough to put myself on the expert level. My greatest area of growth is The Science domain with emphasis on Financial Management. The realization that these domains rank from my strengths down to my......

Benefits of Self Evaluation

...Organizational Behavior December 2014 Q1. Understanding Human Behavior is critical to organizations. Benefits of self-evaluation/self- assessment as it relates to leaders today. Leadership is all about people. Effective leaders have strong ability to create a compelling vision and lead people to the achievements of goals. Irrespective of whether you are an experienced leader or new and feeling uneasy in a leadership role, one of the key knowledge one should possess is knowledge of self. Leaders are influential. This fact makes the understanding of how exactly the leader effects his followers a vital part for the leader’s and organization success. Knowing oneself is the first step to such understanding. Numerous studies on leadership attributes, be it personality traits, skills or knowledge provide us with a rich coverage of what makes a good leader. Leaders must be visionary, charismatic, curious, creative, competent, empathetic, courageous, have good communication skills and exhibit common sense (Lee Iacocca’s 9C’s), relentless in execution, intellectually and emotionally intelligent. There is hardly anyone that can get the highest scores in all the dimensions. That is where the self-awareness takes the prime part. Self-assessment and evaluation are the exercises that can increase leader’s self-awareness in different areas, from values and personal style to impact on others and own strengths and limitations. Let’s consider some of the areas for......

Control Self Assessment

...Control Self-assessment for Information and Related Technology To ensure smooth functioning of an enterprise striving to achieve predetermined objectives, business processes are identified and defined. To ensure the proper completion of process work, procedures are defined, documented and established. Business procedures need to be properly controlled to ensure smooth completion. Out-of-control procedures are expensive; therefore, controls need to be in place. These controls can be preventive, detective and/or corrective in nature. However, the adequacy of controls over procedures depends on various factors, including a balance between costs incurred for implementing controls and the resulting benefits derived. Many controls are essential overheads for the business, and therefore, their effectiveness must be reviewed periodically. Internal audit of controls, an essential overhead, helps avoid relaxation on controls. Ultimately, the control overheads constitute a major expenditure item. Assurance that the controls are in place and effective is essential. This assurance can be given through control self-assessment (CSA), also referred to as control self-assurance. Systems and procedures for many business organizations within various sectors have evolved over time. For example, banking is the oldest service sector and the controls over banking procedures are essential not only for the bank, but also for society in general. Controls in banking procedures have also evolved......

Benefit of Self Evaluation as It Relate to Leadership

...The benefits of self-evaluation as it relates to leaders today When talking about LEAN, leadership is a key component of change and driving implementation.  The article below, written as part of my MBA in Leadership and Sustainability with Robert Kennedy College & The University of Cumbria, examines the benefits of self-evaluation for leaders. Self-evaluation or “self-leadership” (Runn, 2011) forms a critical part of a leaders repertoire and some key blocks of the foundation for this persons leadership.  If someone can ultimately say that they fully understand themselves, they will find it much easier to understand others around them. This however requires some strong discipline from the leader, to continuously self-evaluate and aim for continuous improvement.  There are some key questions that the leader needs to ask themselves and truthfully answer to gage where they are at. 1.      Do as you preach If a leader makes a statement about what he or she will be doing, they need to take ownership and answer on the basis whether they actually did as they said.  When a leader expects others to follow suit, they need to set the standards. 2.      Change is ok If a change of direction was required from the initial target, that is ok, as long as the leader can clearly identify why it was different to the planned path, and explain that in simple terms. The two points above can be broken into many individual questions that form the basis of a......

The tool is used to assess expertise in critical areas of leadership. The competencies comprise a subset of relevant management and leadership tasks. It is used to assist in identifying areas this author considers to be current strengths and areas that athe author aspires to grow and develop. Figure 1 shows the results of the self-assessment. Figure 1 When reviewing the results in Figure 1, there are patterns evident in the current competencies scoring. First, this author rated herself lower in all competencies for her current capabilities than she would like to have upon completion of her master’s program and as she develops her skills over time in her career. It’s probably noteworthy that the author would like to exhibit a high level of competency in all areas as well...
