Week 1 Practice Worksheet

Prepare a written response to the following questions.

Chapter 1

1. Explain and give an example for each of the following types of variables:

a. Nominal: Measurement where a number is assigned to represent something or someone else. An example of nominal could be credit card numbers, social security numbers, or zip codes.

b. Ordinal: Measurement that shows the order or rank of items. An example of ordinal could be ranking places in a contest, or test scores.

c. Interval: Measurements that do not have a true zero and are composed of equal units. An example of interval could be temperature as temperature has no true zero.

d. Ratio scale: Measurement that has a true zero and is distributed equally. An example of ratio could be weight height, time, or age.

e. Continuous: Measured as a long continuum at any place beyond the decimal point and can be measured in fractional units. An example of this would be Olympic athletes as judges will time them to the nearest millionth place.

f. Discrete: Measurement in which measurements are in whole units. An example of this could be used when a census of the population is taken.

g. Quantitative: Varies by amount, is measured numerically and usually collected by counting or measuring. An example of this could be measuring food intake by calories or counting the number of pieces of food consumed.

h. Qualitative: Varies by class, often represented as a label and describes nonnumeric aspects of phenomena. An example of this could be social economic class, behavioral disorders, as well as drug use.

...Vy Nguyen SOCS 315/Prof. Angelica McKinney 1/11/13 What important changes in family patterns do you see today? Do you see positive changes, negative changes, or both? What do they mean for families, in your opinion? Important changes in family patterns I observed are people are more independent and the value of family is coming back into perspective. From the last few decades, young generation preferred to live independently after the job and marriage, but now culture of society is changing. Economic factors have also contributed in this change as jobs are not stable; salaries are very low as result of which it become difficult to run family expenses. I see both positive and negative changes in families today. The positive I see are fathers being more involved in their kids’ lives rather than just the moms. The elders are getting proper love and care from their children’s. The negative I see is more single parent families. Divorce has become common in society as a result of which children’s does not get the love of both parents.  In my view, that means that people are not taking family as serious as they should and I also believe that there is a huge lack of respect in relationships due to which partners are living separately. What are some examples of a personal or family problem that is at least partly a result of problems in the society? There are many problems in our society which are affecting every family life. One problem that I see and think is our......

...DQ 1: What are some terms related to hypothesis testing that you are already familiar with? What is the difference between a null and an alternative hypothesis statement? Why do a null and alternative hypothesis have to be mutually exclusive? (Due Wednesday) Terms that is related to hypothesis testing that I am familiar with is hypothesis, which means a prediction which is usually based on an informal observation, research and it is tested in a study. Theory is another term I know. Theory is what one has or a set of principles that tries to explain one or more facts. I did not know there was something called null hypothesis. According to our textbook, “null hypothesis” is because it “states the situation in which there is no difference ( the difference is null) between the populations” (Aron, Aron, & Coups, 2009). Null hypothesis will show that there is no observed effect for a experiment. A null hypothesis is what one tries to overturn his or her hypothesis test. Taylor (2013) states, “We hope to obtain a small enough p-value that we are justified in rejecting the null hypothesis” (para. 3). A alternative hypothesis is also known as an experimental hypothesis. It shows that there is a observed effect for an experiment. It is what one tries to show in an indirect way by using the hypothesis testing. If the null hypothesis is rejected then one will see that the alternative hypothesis is effective. Now if the finding are not null then one will not accept the alternative of......

Psy/315 Week 4 Individual Assignment

...Week 4 Individual Assignment Erwin O. Raymer III PSY/315 Jan. 13th 2014 Jennifer Lapin Week 4 Individual Assignment The five steps of hypothesis testing consist of the following. Restate the question as a research hypothesis and a null hypothesis. This is where an individual would make a research hypothesis, which is basically a prediction intended to be tested in a research study. This prediction is usually based on the researcher’s theory. A null hypothesis is the opposite of the research hypothesis. If the null hypothesis is found to be true then it is not possible for the research hypothesis to be relevant. Same goes for if the research hypothesis is true then the null hypothesis is unable to be relevant as well. Determine the characteristics of the comparison distribution. In the hypothesis testing process you want to find out the probability that you could have a sample score as extreme as what you got if your sample was from a population with a distribution of the sort you would have if the null hypothesis were true. That is in the hypothesis testing process, you compare the actual samples score to this comparison distribution. Determine the cut off sample score on the comparison distribution at which the null hypothesis should be rejected. (Critical value) Ideally, before conducting a study, researchers set a target against which they will compare their results. How extreme a sample score they would need to decide......

...Ch.1. Review Amber Hennrich May 26, 2014 12. Explain and give an example for each of the following types of variables: (a) equal-interval, (b) rank-order, (c) nominal, (d) ratio scale, (e) continuous. A) An equal-interval is a variable in which numbers stand for approximately equals amounts of what is being measured. Example: Grade Point Average B) A rank-order variable is numeric and the numbers stand only for the relative ranking. Example: A graduate standing in their class. Their GPA makes a big difference for instance if they stand first or second in the class. C) A nominal variable is not numeric and values are names or categories. Example: A nominal variable for gender would be female and male. D) A ratio scale is measured by equal-interval variable. An equal-interval variable has an absolute zero point on the ratio scale. An absolute zero point means there is an absence of the variable. Example: A number of cats an individual has. If one person has three and the other has six, you can say that they have three times the amount of that person. E) A continuous variable is a theory that you can have an infinite number between 2 variables. Example: An example of this would big age. You can say you are 12.5 years old. 15. Make (a) a frequency table and (b) a histogram. Then (c) describe the general shape of the distribution. A) Speeds | Frequency | Percent | 15-21 | 2 | 5% | 22-28 | 4 | 10% | 29-35 | 17 | 42.50% | 36-42 | 13 | 32.50% | ...

The researchers defined electronic bullying as “…a means of bullying in which peers use electronics {such as text messages, emails, and defaming Web sites} to taunt, threaten, harass, and/or intimidate a peer” (p.565). The table below is a frequency table showing the adolescents’ reported incidence of being victims or perpetrators or traditional and electronic bullying. a. Psy345 Week 1 Worksheet

...University of Phoenix Material Week One Worksheet Respond to the following questions in 75 to 150 words each. 1. Differentiate between sensation and perception. Explain the importance of separating these concepts. Sensation is the process in which sensory receptors are stimulated, producing nerve impulses that travel to the brain, which in turn interprets such impulses as a visual images, sound, taste, odor, touch, or pain. The physical stimulus present in the environment puts out energy that is absorbed by a sensory organ causing sensation. Perceptions is the when the brain performs organization of information it obtains from the neural impulses, and then begins the process of translation and interpretation. It is a vital process that helps us rationalize or make sense of the information related to the physical stimulus. Perception occurs when the brain processes information to give meaning to it, by means of emotions, memories. Perception is the process in the brain that helps us to make sense of what we are touching or hearing or tasting or why it hurts. Sensation is the actual sense we get out of the information the brain is sending. While they work closely together they are two sperperate things. 2. Identify the biological factors that influence sensation and perception. Biological factors like physical, physiological, chemical, neurological, or genetics can effect sensation and perception. Kind of like depth perception and fear of......
