Port expanders are available for almost any kind of port that is on your computer. They are used to allow you to connect many devices through one port. The most common port expander you will come across will be for USB. Port expanders are generally portable as they are most commonly used for laptops which may not have enough ports for all the devices you may desire to connect to them. Though they do vary in size most fit right into your laptop bag without taking up much extra space. The main advantages of a port expander are that they allow you to connect multiple devices through one port. The advantage here is if you have 2 USB ports on your laptop and one gets broken you can use an expander to connect the other devices through the one working port. Port expanders are for the most part generic in nature. USB on a Mac is the same as USB on a PC. This makes them easy to purchase since you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues between devices. The disadvantage of a port expander is that they are still restricted to the power of the port they are connected to was designed for. To this end you can potentially connect too many things to the one port and it will not work. Also using to may devices through an expander may reduce the performance of all devices connected to it as they will not be getting enough power for proper functionality. The over loading of an expander could even lead to your computer not turning on. If this happens simply unplug the expander and your computer should start up normally. Port Expanders are a useful device that allows you to do more with less. They work with all platforms and make computing even more convenient. As long as you use some common sense and a little moderation they are a very useful tool.

As far as if the port expanders are made for specific types of computers, what I’ve found are mixed answers online for this one. So for my own conclusion, I’m going to say they are generally basic, but doesn’t mean it will work with all computers, because a port expander doesn’t actually introduce any new hardware, just introduces a connection.
