Quality Nursing Indicators

Task 1 A. Understanding Nursing Sensitive Indicators Nursing indicators are a way of measuring the quality and quantity of care that a patient is receiving. The nursing indicators are directly related to the nursing practice. (Movitalvo, 2007). The three components of the indicators are:
Structural Indicators The skill, education and certification level of the current nursing staff. If the nurse feels like he or she has time to take with the patient then out comes are better. If the staffing levels are below average then the outcomes are shown to decrease. Having a good mix of nursing staff with varying levels of expertise is also an important indicator. Bachelors or Master level nursing have an increase in positive outcomes as opposed to an associate degree nurse which would have a decrease in outcomes. (Sauls, 2013). Process Indicators On the job nursing satisfaction, if the staff is happy and feel content within the job that they are doing then the outcomes of the patients have also been shown to be positive. How assessments are done and the type of interventions will increase positive outcomes. Best practices equal best outcomes for the patients.(Sauls,2013)
Outcome Indicators
A few outcome indicators clearly have nothing to do with the care that the nursing staff provided. These outcomes are out of the control of the Hospital yet still are part of the quality of care that is looked at and analyzed. A readmission for a pressure ulcer or an infection that was acquired while the patient was at home or a possible organ failure. The quality and quantity of care provided by the nursing staff is an important outcome for the patient. Common inputs can include hard work, tolerance and enthusiasm and common outputs can be salary, benefits and recognition or rewards. The maintenance of this balance between inputs and outputs results in more productive, efficient and content workforce. A good way to look at this is that a worker will feel equal if he or she perceives that the reward received for their hard work is the same as that of an employee of the same level. If the reward received by the second employee ends up being greater or if the second employee receives the same reward for less work, the first employee may feel neglected and may even become less productive to match the second employee’s performance level. Mergers in the arts are rare, and nonetheless, risky, therefore all parties are going through thorough discussions process before coming to a final decision. A merger of this sort is unfamiliar, therefore gaining support of the merger has been difficult. It is important to consider all parties and their concerns equally, and implement motivational methods and/or organizational tactics to gain support for the proposed merger. Leadership, as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, can simply be “the act or an instance of leading” (2012). Nurses, in their role as manager of patient care, have many possibilities for exerting leadership on an interdisciplinary team. One way that a nurse can exert leadership is to motivate her peers to take action when presented with a problem. Too often, people are prone to complaining or complacency when confronted with a problem. People believe that the problem is something that is out of their control, or may simply not have the empathy to clearly understand that the problem at hand is important (Kruger, 2010). For example, there has been a recent increase in Emergency Department activity in the past few months. Due to the hustle and bustle on the unit, rooms are not getting cleaned by Environmental Services as quickly as they should, but the rooms are being cleared on the tracking board (a computer program that shows the status of all of the ED rooms). This is causing a problem with the triage nurses, as they are bringing patients back to dirty rooms and must return patients to triage while the triage nurse cleans the room. Nursing-sensitive indicators are factors that rely directly on the nursing care of the patient. Quality nursing care improves patient care and therefore patient outcomes. There should be a restraint policy at this healthcare facility. Promotion of a restraint free environment would be ideal. Education on ways to redirect the patient and promote relaxation might help. Wrapping IV catheters and positioning any tubes, drains, or urinary catheters out of the patient's view may also help. Nurses should also help the patient with toileting on a regular basis.
