These are two different approaches of managing people. Details are given below.
• Personnel management is a traditional approach of managing people in the organization. Human resource management is a contemporary approach of managing people and their strengths in the organization.
• Personnel management focuses on personnel administration, worker welfare and labor relation. Human resource management focuses on acquisition, development, motivation and maintenance of human resources in the organization.
• Personnel management assumes people as a input for achieving desired output. Human resource management assumes people as an important and valuable resource for achieving desired output.
• Under personnel management, personnel function is undertaken for employee's satisfaction. Under human resource management, administrative function is undertaken for aim achievement.
• Under personnel management, employees are provided with less training and development opportunities. Under human resource management, employees are provided with more training and development opportunities.
• Personnel management focuses on increased production & satisfied employees. Human resource management focuses on effectiveness, culture, productivity & employee's participation.
• Personnel management is concerned with personnel manager. Human resource management is concerned with all level of managers from top to bottom.
• Personnel management is a process function. Human resource management is a strategic function.

...Organizational Structure MGT/230 Organizational Structure When dealing with the structure of an organization there are two main structures each company follows. One is the Horizontal Structure and one is the Vertical Structure. With a company such as Starbucks the company falls under what is known as the Horizontal Structure, meaning they use a “functional” form of organization versus a hierarchy. According to Bateman and Snell (2011), this means the jobs and departments are specialized and grouped according to business functions and the skills they require. This kind of function influences the type of organizational structure much like blue prints determine the type of building will be made, whether it is a one story home or a ten story office building. The final step in the structure of the business is the actual design, known as the organizational design. All these factors combined determine what type of business structure each company will fall into. Horizontal versus Vertical Structure With a company such as Starbucks that operates over 17,000 stores in 50 different countries (“Starbucks”, 2011) the Horizontal Structure works the best for operational purposes. The company does have a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) but he does not run a hierarchy. The way that the hierarchical levels are in this company is; the owner/CEO occupies the highest position. The next position down the vertical structure is a shared level of management, which is occupied by a project manager, and a super intendant. Each project has their own project manager and super intendant that report to the owner/CEO. The company that I work for is a decentralized organization, where “decision making occurs at the level of the people who are most directly affected and have the most intimate knowledge about the problem” (Bateman & Snell, 2011). The reason that this is the most effective for this company is, because of the need in the construction industry for decisions made in a timely manner, in order for the project at hand to effectively and efficiently get done. In some instances it would not be conducive to go through the process of the decision going up the vertical structure. The first structure I will discuss is the functional structure it is when each job becomes the focus point, similar jobs done by employees are put in silos, and specialized jobs are combined and done by centralized employees. The benefits of this structure are that the order of command is sound and falls directly inline. Both primary and secondary data were obtained for analysis employing both descriptive and inferential statistics for analysis. A sample size of 150 respondents and 90 firms were selected for both primary data and secondary data respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the primary data, while Chi-Square was used to draw inference of perceived relationship between capital structure and firm value. The results of the study suggested that a positively significant relationship exists between a firm’s choice of capital structure and its market value in Nigeria. The study suggested that listed firms in Nigeria should strategically plan and manage their capital structure in order to maximize their market values.
