Fuel from the Fields

B a c k g r o u n d

More than 2 billion people use wood, charcoal, dung or agricultural residues as the primary fuel for their cooking and heating needs, leading to significant health, economic and environmental consequences. Burning wood or agricultural residues produces smoke with a variety of irritant pollutants, some of which are known carcinogens. More than 1.5 million deaths a year are caused by acute respiratory infections from breathing smoke from indoor cooking fires. Women and children are generally exposed to the greatest levels of pollutants and it is children who suffer the greatest health risk – respiratory infections are the leading cause of death of young children worldwide. Small-scale subsistence farmers who make less than US$2 per day may use wood charcoal for cooking fuel. In areas where wood is scarce and farmers are not able to collect it themselves, the cost of cooking fuel is a significant drain on their limited resources. An estimated 50 billion hours are spent collecting firewood each year and families can spend over 25% of their income on fuel, leaving them with less income to cover other basic needs such as medicine, food and clean water. For comparison, even the poorest 20% of the U.S. population spends only 1% of their income on energy for their household.

In the year 2000, indoor air pollution from solid fuel use was responsible for more than 1.6 million annual deaths and 2.7% of the global burden of disease. -World Health Organization

Furthermore, many areas of the developing world face massive environmental problems due to deforestation as almost half the world’s timber harvest is burned for fuel. For example, Haiti is 98% deforested as a result of demand for fuel. Due to necessity driven by severe economic and political instability, the remaining trees continue to be cut down.

Why We Hurt the Ones We Love the Most

...2012 Why We Hurt the Ones We Love Most Many people have realized we hurt the ones we love the most, and in the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, it really make you realize why we do such a thing. There are two brothers in the story trying to make it together, and the older brother pushes it to the edge. The older brother, the narrator, is loving, full of pride, cruel, and hopeful all at the same time, towards his little brother Doodle. With all these emotions going on at the same time, the results turn out to be something you would never imagine. In the story Doodle, William Armstrong, was born as a very special young man. He was so special; nobody thought he was going to live when being born. He didn’t get a name till’ he was three months old and had a casket built for him as a sign. With all this being wrong with him, his older brother gave him the nickname Doodle because he felt it wasn’t a name he had to live up to, or be expected of big things, rather than William Armstrong. Though it seems mean everyone agreed, but that’s okay because he was still a loving older brother towards Doodle. He took Doodle everywhere with him as he grew up. He even took him to his favorite place, The Old Woman Swamp. They would go all the time and have lots of fun like normal brothers would. They made crowns, necklaces, and more together out of honeysuckle. So, with Doodle being a little different then normal little brothers he did he did have that one loving spot in his......

One of the Things I Love About God

...One of the things that I love about God’s word the most is that it is so timeless. Perhaps the reason is, that even though the world changes around us constantly, human nature tends to remain much the same. This evening, I would like to show you what I mean, as we look at a story in God’s word. John 9 Can you imagine what it must be like to be blind? This man was born that way. How do you begin to describe to a blind man, the simple things we take for granted? How do you begin to describe the colors of autumn leaves? How do you describe the yellow buttercups or the white dogwood blossoms or redbuds in the spring? How do you begin to paint a baby blue sky with white fluffy clouds in the mind of someone who has never seen the light of day? How do you describe to him what his parents look like or what he looks like? I wonder, how many times did this young man sit and wonder, “oh, if only I could see?” If only I could be like everyone else. If only I did not have to rely on others to bring me down town where I have to sit and beg. If only I could see so that I could get a job. If only….. Imagine? I’m sorry, but I cannot. In this story that we have just read, is a man, just like that. He is blind and has always been. Along comes this man, the Son of God, who gives to him the one thing that he has never had, his eyesight. Immediately, some of the folks around town notice. Isn’t this the beggar who was blind? Some said, “yes, this is him”. ......

The Great Danger in Doing Right in One Own Eyes

...The great danger of doing what is right in one’s own eyes, is that you are setting yourself up for destruction, because you are not consulting god first, you are following your own understanding of how things should go. We are living in a world today where people going about there on righteousness, as a Christian we suppose to tell them the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is ever lasting life because our way is not gods way and gods way is not our way. When we are doing what’s we think is right in our own eyes we denied god, we don’t trust god to do what he say, so god let us go our way, soon or later things starts to crumble but he still loves us. He won’t us to understand him, and to do his will, being obedient to god is much better than sacrifice. Proverbs – 3: 5 say: trust in the lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding : Proverbs 3:6, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths, we can be ignorant of god’s righteousness, we go out seeking to establish our own righteousness, we need wisdom; knowledge understanding, which all of it comes from god. If you are going by what’s right in your own eyes, you will not treat people with love and kindness. You wouldn’t want to help them. You would act like you are in control of your own life. Yes this is still occurring in our society today. In our justice system, in our government, they think they are doing right in there own eyes. They should ask god for wisdom, knowledge...

How Is the Story Told in Chapter One of the Great Gatsby?

...How does Fitzgerald tell the story in chapter one of the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’? In the opening chapter of the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ Fitzgerald uses a variety of techniques such as intra-fictional narration from Nick and change in from to introduce the characters so as to keep the readers interested and to make the chapter memorable. The very begging of the novel is written in autobiographical fashion so as to allow the main narrator to introduce himself to the reader. It is through the use of Bildungsroman that we learn of nicks privileged upbringing Once again the ending is set in natural light with nick returning home in the moonlight to find the infamous Gatsby “regarding the silver pepper of the stars”. In this final romantic setting the readers, and nick, are introduced to Gatsby as “stretching his arms out” towards “the green light” at the end of daisy’s dock as if it were a religious icon he was longing to get closer to, it could also be interpreted that this light is almost his interpretation of his light to heaven with the oxymoron of it being green ( which is associated with nature, freedom and generally as a go sign) and the fact it is a warning light used to tell boats to stay away showing his confusion and unrequited longing for another. In this first glimpse of Gatsby, Fitzgerald not only links him with the romance and purity of the natural light of stars and moonlight, but his dream is symbolically identified as being false and artificial, thus......

The Great Gatsby - Does Gatsby Really Love Daisy?

...True love is not a state of mind, but a state of being. It is the ultimate force that drives ones actions, whether moral or not. Love binds people, and demands attention to only itself. Gatsby persistently tries to win over Daisy’s love, despite the cards that fate has dealt for him. For Jay Gatsby to fulfill his dreams of being with such a woman like Daisy Buchanan, he begins to demonstrate his actions of love towards her. Gatsby has wanted to see Daisy again since the first time he met her, so the tea at Nick’s house was his first chance at the perfect moment to show his true feelings for her. He goes through great lengths to redecorate Nick’s house to impress Daisy, and going out of his way to make sure things go as planned. The reader is aware that these somewhat “unnecessary” actions from Gatsby portray the way he chooses to show his affection. As Gatsby sees Daisy, he recalls that it will be “five years next November” (Fitzgerald, 88) since they last met. It is evident that has has been counting the days that have gone by without Daisy, clearly a reaction from a man yearning for Daisy’s love in return. Gatsby’s greatest action of love is one that has been in progress for many years......

Compare the Way Love Is Represented in ‘Ghazal’ with One Other Poem

...Compare the way love is represented in ‘Ghazal’ with one other poem ‘Love’ can be defined as a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection to something or someone. Poe believed that all good literature must create a unity of effect on the reader and this effect must reveal truth or evoke emotions. His work is admired as an excellent example of how a short story can produce an effect on the reader; much like how ‘Ghazal’ and ‘Hour’ produce an effect of love and pathos towards the characters. The poems ‘Ghazal’ by Mimi Khalvati and ‘Hour’ by Carol Ann Duffy are similar in many ways. Firstly, the structures of both include couplets; however ‘Hour’ is in a sonnet form with 3 quatrains and a couplet to finish, and ‘Ghazal’ has 10 couplets. This shows the reader immediately that both poems are of the theme of love. Also, this type of structure links to Shakespeare’s sonnets, as they have a similar, if not the same, structure. Additionally, the form of poetry that ‘Ghazal’ is one that is traditionally sung and deals with unattainable love. This form dates back to 7th century Arabia. Secondly, in the poem ‘Hour’ the poet presents love with the description of ‘time’s beggar’. The love talked about in this poem appears to be personified as a beggar. This may suggest that love wants more time to be with their other half. In addition, the poet redefines wealth as love and time rather than as money and gold. Carol Ann Duffy uses two fairytales, ‘Cinderella’ and......

Don’t Fall in Love with One Company

...Don’t Fall in Love With One Company Most people come into business school with an open mind. But as we progress through the recruiting cycle, it’s very easy to get attached to certain companies. Company presentations are designed to generate interest and put recruiting companies in the best possible light. When you start attending networking events, you’ll undoubtedly meet people you really like and can relate with. And you’ll hear about projects from those people that fascinate you. Eventually, you start picturing yourself working at said company and before you know it, you have a dream job you’re recruiting for. The problem with being focused on one company is that the recruiting process can be fickle and subjective. You could spend months researching, networking, and preparing to interview with your dream company. But all it takes is a single negative thought from an interviewer to crush those dreams. Even if you do everything right, there’s always the possibility that an interviewer simply won’t like you. In the world of MBA recruiting, the hiring companies definitely have an advantage: each company is going to screen several students and will only actually hire a select few. But regardless of your background, on any given MBA campus, there are plenty of companies you can recruit for. Don’t make your MBA experience entirely focused on one company. If you limit your possible outcomes for success, you’re definitely more likely to fail. Your MBA......

1. Is the Mystery Man with Twenty-One Faces a Great Criminal? Why or Why Not

...1. Is the Mystery Man with Twenty-One faces a great criminal? Why or why not? Great criminals are those who threaten the laws of a sovereign. Laws only serve as vulnerable limitations, to which criminals seek to surpass. German Philosopher Walter Benjamin suggests that the law breaking tendencies of criminals create admiration and envy amongst the public. In the case of the mystery man with twenty faces, the popularity their crimes garnered from the media and subsequent praise from the public suggests the group to be great criminals. This admiration from the public suggests a social acceptance and vicarious envy to the criminal that succeeded in breaking the crime, and for the most part got away with it. Through the lens of Walter Benjamin and Marilyn Ivy, one can further denote whether the mystery man with twenty-one faces was really a great criminal. The mystery man with twenty faces was an alias for a group of individuals who wrote blackmail letters and threats to chaebols. The anonymity they were able to keep and the fear they were able to instill amongst their victims further exemplify them to be great criminals. Marylin Ivy posits that the group “showed a remarkable savvy about the powers of the media and they demonstrated this savvy tactics that both prefigured and crosscut the dominance of electronic mediation” (Ivy 16). Their ability to stay operational and undetected strengthens their “power” as criminals and allows for a story that the public would rather not...

Love in Act One- Othello

...Theme of Love in Othello - Act 1 The theme of love is an important element to any Shakespearean tragedy, and Othello is no different. From the start it is made apparent that Roderigo is in love with ‘Desdemona’, but she is married to the “moor”, Othello. When Brabantio is told that his daughter is with the moor, he says “It is too true an evil. Gone she is. And what’s to come of my despised timeIs naught but bitterness” he is saying that now she has gone, his life will be nothing but bitterness. This shows the love he has for his daughter. The mere thought of loosing his daughter makes him hysterical. He immediately questions the moors motives. “Is there not charms by which the property of youth and maidhood may be abused?” He is saying that Othello used ‘magical spells’ to lead his daughter astray and stole her innocence. The fact that he hastily jumped to this conclusion proves that his love for his daughter has blinded him. He is refusing to acknowledge the fact that she may of actually been willing to marry this man and have any sort of consenting sexual relations with him. Although we hear a lot about Othello and Desdemona’s relationship, it is not until scene 2 that we hear Othello’s account of their relationship, which is eminently different. He tells the story of how him and Desdemona met; Brabantio “oft invited” him into their home and he would tel them the stories of his past. He states that she instigated the conversation as she was inquisitive......
