Functions of management

Management, or the successful operation of a business or organization, can be simply described as the implementation of processes and procedures in order to solve problems in a productive and resourceful manner. This process can be carried out by means of what are commonly designated as the utilities or functions of management. The four common functions are: planning, organizing, leading and controlling which have the projected outcome of making use of any businesses available assets and resources in such a way that its mission statement and goals can be acceptably accomplished.
The first and possibly most important step of managing an organization or business is the planning step. This function of management involves predicting the potential course the organization will be directed toward in upcoming months and years and coordinating specific routes that need to be followed in order to reach the businesses full potential. Planning is a methodical activity that establishes who will carry out a specific job, when that job or task needs to be performed and the manner in which it should be carried out. The planning phase of business management is a comprehensive program that concerns impending plans for specific actions. “Planning is concerned with the future impact of today's decisions. It is the fundamental function of management from which the other four stem. The need for planning is often apparent after the fact. However, planning is easy to postpone in the short-run. Postponement of planning especially plagues labor oriented, hands on managers” (Erven, n.d.).
The second step in a business management plan is referred to as organizing. This is the step or function in which the bringing together and grouping of available resources occurs. The three most vital resources which must be combined and…...

...Decision-Making Process Paper MGT/230 Decision-Making Process Paper Important decisions are made daily within my life that will ultimately affect my future. Lifelong challenges which include career path choices, personal wellbeing, and lifetime goals are constantly evaluated; seeking to achieve a greater result. The ideal decision-making process as described in (Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World) Bateman and Snell (2011) includes six stages: * Identify and diagnose the problem * Generate alternative decisions * Evaluate alternatives * Making the choice * Implementing the decision * Evaluating the decision I use this method to make decisions and evaluate all possibilities before implementing the idea into an action. When I decided to go back to school, I had the option to continue with my last employer to change for a lighter workload while attending. I did not want to limit myself to my previous hourly wage and position. I look at all alternatives before deciding to focus on school and obtaining my real estate license to establish another source of income. Implementing decisions are challenging in the sense that you may face opposition towards changes. (Decisions are likely to attract varying degrees of opposition, ranging from mild dissent to outright resistance.) ("Laynetworks", n.d) Once an idea is implemented into my daily life, I constantly evaluate my situation to determine if my actions are leading to my......

...Decision-Making Process Paper Jovon Roberson MGT/230 December 17, 2012 Juan Mobley Decision-Making Process Paper My name is Jovon Roberson, I will be discussing my decision making process. I will try to supply research supporting my ideas. The paper will describe some steps of my process. I will compare some similarity to the text, and explain how some of the steps might be different. Most decisions people make in their life time will definitely be easy and some maybe very difficult. I truly believe that each individual is in control of their own destiny and in complete control of the decisions they have to make in their life time. My decision to start school was clearly decided right after I was terminated from my job. I was ill at the time and desperately needed to file for the family medical leave of absence so my job would not be in jeopardy, but that was a total loss. Once terminated I clearly had to make some important decisions about the future of my son and I, while thinking long and hard about how I was going to make ends meet. I had a discussion with one of my best friends and I came to the grips that I needed more than what I was getting and this really was my only option going to school. My steps are somewhat different from the ones in the text, but it is clear they there were important steps to take while making my decision to go back to school and I really believe it was one of the best decision I could have made. My decisions would have been......

...Organizing Paper MGT/230 January 21, 2013 Mark Hardee Organizing Paper The Ford Motor Company is an organization that is a Fortune 500 company and a staple of the American auto industry ever since the company was formed in 1903. Like any company that has many different functions of management there are also organizational resources that relate to how those functions come together and help ensure the success of a company. Monetary assets, human resources, and technology are some of the organizational resources that I will explain in the following paragraphs. Monetary assets are important to every company and Ford is no different. When Ford establishes their goals and the strategies associated with the different functions of management, funds will then be set aside for resources and labor that will ensure that the tasks and goals that were introduced can be achieved. When the money is spent, there are financial statements that change to show the reflection of what was spent. Analyzing these statements is the common method to monitor the progress of the plans and the progress that was set into motion by the management. The organization of monetary assets is one of the most important aspects of any company. It becomes a crucial part of planning in the function of management that Ford has the best people in position to make sure a proper system is set to maintain the high standards necessary for a successful company. Effective bookkeeping allows reports to be viewed by......

...Decision Making Process Ashley Lopez MGT 230 University of Phoenix September 26th, 2013 The decision making process used by the student is one which focuses on the pros and cons of the decision needed to be made and potential consequences of the decision whether they are positive or negative. When purchasing a new vehicle the student had to base her decision on the financial obligations it would take in order to be able to afford the new car and whether or not it would take from other financial obligations she already had. The first process in the student’s decision making process was to identify the pros and cons of purchasing a new car. the pros were that the student would have better and more reliable transportation than her current vehicle, the costs of repairing her current vehicle would decrease to none because the vehicle would be new and the potential for the vehicle to break was slim to none, the new vehicle would have more space and a warranty as well. The cons of purchasing a new vehicle for the student was that the new vehicle’s payments would be more than her current vehicle which meant less money for luxury items and the increase in cost of insurance for the new vehicle. The pros clearly outweighed the cons in this matter. The second step was to determine which vehicle would be most suitable for the student and hr child. Once the student chose the vehicle she wanted, she then searched the area for the best deal, although not sacrificing quality for......

...Decision-Making Process Sandra Wilton MGT/230 August 29, 2013 Pat Chatman Decision-Making Process My journey thinking about college was very long with many years of dreaming to enroll in school. There was always something in the way of me getting my education. Graduation was over 35 years ago in 1976. I found myself not being able to move up in jobs because I did not have a degree. Everything I applied for needed that piece of paper. Being a single Mom and raising a daughter it just was not in the cards for me to attend school. There was also another fear that it may be too hard and that passing would be too much of a challenge. I found myself being very hard on myself and talking my way out of pursuing my dream. My son came along fourteen years later and now I had two children and no extra time or money. The dream continued and my daughter graduated from college. Being so proud but still feeling that void. My son registered for college and had a year under his belt. I decided I needed to at least look into it and see what it may take for me to enroll. Being excited and scared I thought my turn is going to happen so the call went into University of Phoenix as well as others and my goal began. I was in step one of my biggest decision. Step two was determining which school would be my choice. Several schools were looked at and University of Phoenix was chosen and my life was to be different from now on. Working through steps......

Organizational Structural Paper Mgt 230

...Organizational Structure Paper MGT/230 Organizational Structure Paper A successful company is like a well-oiled machine. It is made up of many small individual components that alone cannot do much, but when assembled together, it can be a powerful machine. A company’s organizational structure must be almost perfectly planned. By generating an organizational arrangement, a company generates lucidity and liability for all staff. This gives you an idea about responsibility for any member of staff functioning for the company, particularly all stages of administration. The value of an organizational structure does not have depends on the achievement of the employeesin the particular occupation, because a great structure has its organizational functions and designs to fix problems. There are lots of categories of managerial designs. Some of these configurations comprise line arrangement, line and staff structure, and the matrix structure. ...Corporate Strategy Analysis MGT/230 April 30, 2015 Corporate Strategy Analysis All corporate system distinguishes the arrangement of organizations, markets, or commercial ventures in which the association struggles and the distribution of assets among those organizations. The four fundamental options when utilizing corporate technique as a part of the arranging capacity of administration are fixation, vertical joining, concentric enhancement, and, aggregate expansion. After reviewing the Destination CEO videos, in regards to Xerox, Coco-Cola, VF Corporation, and Southwest Airlines, the group talked about the different techniques utilized by each organization. Coco-Cola After 35 years as CEO of Coca-Cola, Neville Isdell retired from the company in 2001. In the process of leaving Coca-Cola, deals started to drop, high-turn-over rate turned into the standard, and low confidence weakened the organizations future. “The high profile and notoriously meddlesome Coca-Cola board, which drove out two lackluster management teams, pulled Isdell back” (n.d.). Isdell’s goal was to compete with a different contender like Pepsi. The company moved into the fast food and snacks industry. Moreover, Pepsi ventured into new businesses with Frito-Lay and Gatorade. The company purchased the brand Vitamin Water, which helped the company jump into the non-carbonated drink division. Week 3 Discussion Paper Mgt/230 Uop

...Group Analysis Paper Wk 3 The CEO of Xerox Anne Mulcahy I believe used, concentration for her strategy. She didn’t acquire new companies outside of her industry. She dropped ones that were failing and focused on the ones that were more profitable. She threw out the old idea of expensive printers to high-end digital color printers. She also poured money into research and development to come up with new products to put them over their competitors. Her decisions were sound because she brought a company back from the brink of bankruptcy and turned it back into a thriving business. CEO of Coca-Cola Neville Isdell also used concentration and possibly concentric diversification for his strategy. He was brought back to Coke to help make the company’s fizzling profits stable again. Coke was struggling with Pepsi and if they should branch out to snack foods like their competitor had. Instead, he wanted to stay true to their soft drink origin. Their strategy for growth is to go global as aggressively as possible. Mr. Isdell’s strategy was spot on because Coke is a global force in the beverage industry. I know when I lived in Japan, I saw Coke vending machines everywhere! These machines could house both hot and cold beverages! Now that’s an idea to bring to America! With over 80 beverages, Coke offers I forsee them being in the forefront of business in this particular industry. VF Corp CEO Mackey McDonald’s style is more of concentric diversification because his company obtains new...

...Decision Making MGT 230 University of Phoenix Decision Making There are have been several times in my life that I have had to make a decision that would affect both myself and my family both personally and professionally, but there is one career and life change specifically that I will focus on in this paper and discuss the outcome of my decisions and how it has carried into my life today.   When I graduated from High School, I was offered a full ride scholarship to play football at Trinity International University (Trinity) in Deerfield, IL.  Initially I declined the offer as I was unsure if that was what I wanted to do, but decided that I needed to give it a shot.  So I moved to IL the summer of 2004.  Unfortunately, I blew my knee out the first month I was there and was career ending.  Although the knee injury was disappointing, it wasn't all that bad as I was able to make some connections with a few individuals that own a trading firm that trade on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which at the time, trading was very intriguing to me, so the connection was very important.  I decided to move back home to AZ. In April 2006, I was presented with a job opportunity in Chicago, IL to trade on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange with the contacts that I created when I was at Trinity.  At this time, I lived in Phoenix, AZ, which is where I was born and raised, so despite how incredible the opportunity was and how excited I may have been, I had......

...Negotiations MGT/445 September 14, 2011 Koshy Joseph-Vaidyan Negotiations In my past I learned quickly how to become a productive sales person in the retail industry; I had numerous opportunities to negotiate with people. That was the main focus of my duties. This does not include the price of the garments, because I was not the store owner. I did however; negotiate with the amount of articles I could convince the customer to buy. This particular act was known as called up-sailing and was taught as a working skill at The Men’s Wearhouse. This paper will describe the first opportunity I had to make a sell to a client and to do so without the training provided by the company. The Men’s Wearhouse is known throughout the United States to be a very successful men’s clothing store. “How do you build a company around customers who hate buying what you sell? By building a company that reinvents the shopping experience. "Most business practices repress our natural tendency to have fun and to socialize," Zimmer says. "The idea seems to be that in order to succeed, you have to suffer. But I believe that you do your best work when you are feeling enthusiastic about things. Our business is based on faith in the value of human potential,” (Ransdale 1998). The Men’s Wearhouse offers an extensive training University in California that provides an extensive course on how to hear your client to find their needs and wants, grab their attention, and......
