Let They Play

...August 25, 2010 Let Them Play By Jane Ching Fung ”What is 'Choice Time?,'" she demanded. "Students don’t have time to play." My heart sank when I heard these words coming from the mouth of a district administrator. Everyone on our kindergarten team had included "Choice" minutes in her daily schedule. Choice was a time for students to engage in centers and activities that were not teacher directed, assigned, or graded but intentionally designed to be open-ended, student driven, and to promote unstructured interactions among the children. Dare I say that "Choice" was time set aside for our young students to play? Since when did the word "play" become outlawed in kindergarten? I remember a time when kindergarten classrooms were stocked with wooden blocks, paint, and dramatic-play corners complete with costuming, furniture, appliances, and play food. Not so long ago, there was a period during the day when we encouraged kindergarten students to freely explore, create, and interact with the materials and people around them. On the surface, children may appear to be only "having fun" during this unstructured time, but take a closer look and you’ll discover what I know: Play is so much more than idle entertainment. Play, including the ability to make your own choices, helps children develop and use essential social-emotional and academic-learning skills. Through play, I have seen my students develop social, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in a safe,......

...respond to others. We are social beings, and our social interactions affect our heart rates, general well-being, and even our immune systems. Social intelligence is significant to teachers who are trying to motivate students, employers who want to retain employees and increase production, marriage partners, parents, and everyone else who interacts with other human beings in significant ways—that is, all of us. Goleman even cites examples of how waitresses and clerks sometimes uplift their customers through social intelligence, making us feel better after having made a transaction at the supermarket than we might feel talking with a family member with whom we are in conflict. Social intelligence is everywhere, and there is a name for the new scientific study involving brain research: social neuroscience. These are the neural dynamics of human interactions—what takes place in the brains. MRIs assist scientists in seeing which parts of the brain “light up” and how during social interactions. For instance, the voice of an old friend will light up certain parts of the brain (and doctors now know that those with good social and familial support networks recover faster from illness or surgery than those with few or no supportive networks). A man’s brain will secrete dopamine—a feel-good pleasure chemical—when an woman he finds attractive meets his eyes. The social brain relates to, influences, and is influenced by the internal state of the people we are with. Indeed,......

Let the Earth Bring Forth

...Name: Lau, Kwong Nam Class: Biology 100 Date: 11/05/2014 Let the Earth Bring Forth is a book to prove or testify God’s creation. A man who has spent so much time, efforts and almost his whole life for exploring the region of spiritual faith and science. Many people have some struggles between the theories which they have learned in biology and the traditional opinions of creation that they have learned in school. This book has truly answers all these questions and struggles by using different scriptures in the bible. In this book, the author tried to prove and explain that science and religion are not incompatible by nature. For example, we know that through the bible, the word “day” has used to mention time period. In Genesis 2:17, the Lord has instructed Eve and Adam do not eat the forbidden fruit or they will die on “the day” they eat. We know that at last Adam and Eve have eaten the forbidden fruit but they have lived for many years. The day spoken of in Genesis was not twenty-four hours period we calculate nowadays referring a day. Furthermore, “Let the earth bring forth” is God’s royal command (Gen1:11) God has prepared an earth that would bring forth and grow. In the bible, “And God said, Let the water bring forth abundantly, the moving creature that hath life and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and......
