Let They Play

...August 25, 2010 Let Them Play By Jane Ching Fung ”What is 'Choice Time?,'" she demanded. "Students don’t have time to play." My heart sank when I heard these words coming from the mouth of a district administrator. Everyone on our kindergarten team had included "Choice" minutes in her daily schedule. Choice was a time for students to engage in centers and activities that were not teacher directed, assigned, or graded but intentionally designed to be open-ended, student driven, and to promote unstructured interactions among the children. Dare I say that "Choice" was time set aside for our young students to play? Since when did the word "play" become outlawed in kindergarten? I remember a time when kindergarten classrooms were stocked with wooden blocks, paint, and dramatic-play corners complete with costuming, furniture, appliances, and play food. Not so long ago, there was a period during the day when we encouraged kindergarten students to freely explore, create, and interact with the materials and people around them. On the surface, children may appear to be only "having fun" during this unstructured time, but take a closer look and you’ll discover what I know: Play is so much more than idle entertainment. Play, including the ability to make your own choices, helps children develop and use essential social-emotional and academic-learning skills. Through play, I have seen my students develop social, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in a safe,......

...respond to others. We are social beings, and our social interactions affect our heart rates, general well-being, and even our immune systems. Social intelligence is significant to teachers who are trying to motivate students, employers who want to retain employees and increase production, marriage partners, parents, and everyone else who interacts with other human beings in significant ways—that is, all of us. Goleman even cites examples of how waitresses and clerks sometimes uplift their customers through social intelligence, making us feel better after having made a transaction at the supermarket than we might feel talking with a family member with whom we are in conflict. Social intelligence is everywhere, and there is a name for the new scientific study involving brain research: social neuroscience. These are the neural dynamics of human interactions—what takes place in the brains. MRIs assist scientists in seeing which parts of the brain “light up” and how during social interactions. For instance, the voice of an old friend will light up certain parts of the brain (and doctors now know that those with good social and familial support networks recover faster from illness or surgery than those with few or no supportive networks). A man’s brain will secrete dopamine—a feel-good pleasure chemical—when an woman he finds attractive meets his eyes. The social brain relates to, influences, and is influenced by the internal state of the people we are with. Indeed,......

The D Word

...English 1301.012 06/24/2014 The D Word As we walked up the sidewalk, it felt like we were walking a mile. My girlfriend was squeezing my hand tighter as we approached the house. We were about to drop a bomb shell on her parents. We had the unfortunate news to let them know they were about to be grandparents. At the time, we were about to start our senior year of high school not knowing what our future had in store for us. As we entered the home and proceeded to sit on the dining table, my girlfriend’s sobbing voice called for her parents to join us. At this point, I had knots in my stomach and wanted to run and hide. As we proceeded to tell them, I saw the look of disbelieve and disappointment in their face. That moment also brought tears to my eyes. After about an hour of being scolded and lectured, I felt worst thinking that we had to go through this same process all over again with my family. I should have learned my lesson about teenage pregnancy since my parents were also teenagers when they started their family. We were both raised with typical strict family values so there was no choice of adoptions or abortions. There is nothing that changes the facts that we were about to face the biggest challenges of our lives. Teenage parenting is one of the most difficult tasks anyone could go through. At times it seemed I had the weight of the whole world on my shoulders. I had aspirations to go to college after high school, which was something not the norm in my family.......

Some, such as bedlam, reveal the origin of their current meaning, while others reveal the origin of a different modern word, as with gentle, the sense of which is preserved in gentleman. Some, such as learn and let, now mean the opposite of their former use. 1. Abroad-out of doors 2. Accouchement-birthing 3. Advertisement-a notice to readers in a book Obsolete. ...The drug laws don’t work Written by: Michael Huemer | Appears in: Issue 41 July 20, 2009 Let me begin with a story, and see what you think about it. A man named Flip owned a computer. Flip, however, took very bad care of his computer. He often ate and drank over the computer, which resulted in his spilling Coke on the keyboard on three occasions, ruining the keyboard each time. He installed software that slowed the machine’s performance and caused the operating system to become unstable. Flip thought these programs were “cool”, but most industry experts considered them shoddy products whose drawbacks far outweighed their usefulness. Finally, three weeks ago, Flip got angry at his computer and threw it on the floor. The motherboard and several other components were fatally damaged, so that Flip no longer has a working computer. End of story. Flip was an imprudent and irresponsible computer owner. He made several bad decisions. It would clearly have been better had he taken care of his computer, not installed harmful software, and never thrown it on the floor. This would have been better for the computer, for Flip, and even for society, for Flip would have been a more productive citizen with a working computer. So a question naturally arises: how might we prevent people from behaving like Flip? A solution fairly thrusts itself on our imagination (or at any rate, on the imagination of those who take their cue from modern politics): we could send the police after Flip, to......

Let the Earth Bring Forth

...Name: Lau, Kwong Nam Class: Biology 100 Date: 11/05/2014 Let the Earth Bring Forth is a book to prove or testify God’s creation. A man who has spent so much time, efforts and almost his whole life for exploring the region of spiritual faith and science. Many people have some struggles between the theories which they have learned in biology and the traditional opinions of creation that they have learned in school. This book has truly answers all these questions and struggles by using different scriptures in the bible. In this book, the author tried to prove and explain that science and religion are not incompatible by nature. For example, we know that through the bible, the word “day” has used to mention time period. In Genesis 2:17, the Lord has instructed Eve and Adam do not eat the forbidden fruit or they will die on “the day” they eat. We know that at last Adam and Eve have eaten the forbidden fruit but they have lived for many years. The day spoken of in Genesis was not twenty-four hours period we calculate nowadays referring a day. Furthermore, “Let the earth bring forth” is God’s royal command (Gen1:11) God has prepared an earth that would bring forth and grow. In the bible, “And God said, Let the water bring forth abundantly, the moving creature that hath life and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and......

...Transformation or Retrogression? 2011 December 15 by Nasir El-Rufai [pic][pic][pic]Let me start by apologizing for the inevitable absence of this column in the past two weeks; just as I would also like to express sincere gratitude to all those that visited, called or sent condolence messages to my family for our bereavement. Moving on to the subject of this discourse, in the light of the passionate debate on the removal of fuel subsidy with which the country has been bedeviled in previous couple of months; the issue of whether the 2012 Appropriation Bill is a budget of fiscal consolidation or retrogression is as timely as it is topical. Transformation is a huge word that the Jonathan administration thoughtlessly uses to describe its aspirations. Is there anything transformational about the 2012 Budget proposals? In the course of presenting the Draft Budget, President Jonathan in paragraph 1 of 81 of his address states “this budget is a stepping stone to the transformation of our economy and country in our walk to economic freedom” and concludes in paragraph 76 thereof that “Mr. Senate President……the Proposal I lay before you this day seeks to sustain sound micro-economic growth that will translate to achieving socio-economic transformation, and gainful employment for our people”. Meanwhile, and perhaps by divine providence, in the afternoon of the same Tuesday, 13th of December; the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Nigeria’s biggest power generating plant,......
