Rigases were convicted of stealing $100 million in company funds

updated 6/20/2005 7:04:56 PM ET

NEW YORK — John Rigas, who turned a $300 investment a half century ago into cable behemoth Adelphia Communications Corp., was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday for his role in the looting and debthiding scandal that pummeled the company into bankruptcy.
Rigas’ son Timothy, 49, who like his father was convicted last year of bank fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Sand could have sentenced both men to life.
The sentences are among the harshest handed down in any U.S. court since the fall of Enron in 2001 touched off a rash of corporate scandals that rocked the markets and have cost investors billions of dollars.
Raising the possibility that the frail, 80yearold Rigas could die behind bars, U.S. District Judge Leonard Sand said the sentence might be cut

Former Adelphia Communications CEO John Rigas, 80, enters Manhattan federal court for his sentencing M stealing millions of dollars from the cable company and deceiving investors by hiding its crushing debt.

“This is a tragedy lacking in heroes,” the judge said.
Adelphia prosecutors had accused the Rigases of using complicated cashmanagement systems to spread money around to various familyowned entities and as a cover for stealing about $100 million for themselves.
They were accused of spending the money on a lengthy list of personal luxuries. Prosecutors said John Rigas had ordered two Christmas…...

...situation. Although they attempt to generalize how people learn and understand, one can see through real world experiences that the information we communicate isn’t always universally understood. During some circumstances studies and actual learning experiences will tend to vary. From my earliest years in the military I’ve always wanted to earn my college degree. I felt that finishing my education would be a personal milestone in my life and that it would better prepare me for the future beyond the military. Although it has taken nearly eight years to complete, a degree in Criminal Justice will certainly be an advantage moving forward. In any type of academic, one must identify different learning styles in order to properly retain the information presented in a course. This will help to prepare for different methods of teaching and how to represent information in a way that will be most effectively understood. According to Felder and Soloman “active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it.” (Felder & Soloman, n.d., para. 1) I have always found this to be the best way for me to learn and retain information. Although I have established that this was the best way that I learn, the NC State learning style inventory revealed that I was more of a sensing and visual learner. Furthermore, upon completion of the Penn State inventory I was shown to have characteristics of an auditory and visual learner. When the results were......

...In my opinion, the profession of nursing that we have all chosen for ourselves is one of lifelong learning. With nursing, as well as many other professions, things are changing continually. In order to keep up with these changes, we must be willing to keep learning and growing as professionals. I believe it is our responsibility as nurses to continue to learn new things in order to provide the best care possible for our patients. According to Eason (2010), “In order to assure patients optimal care, nurses must be well versed in the most accurate and current information in clinical practice. Curiosity and desire to enhance nursing knowledge are essential to skill in practice” (p. 155). According to the American Nurses Association (2010), “Registered nurses as lifelong learners must have available the appropriate and adequate professional development and continuing education opportunities to maintain and advance skills and enhance competencies” (p. 118). I feel it is our responsibility, as well as that of our employers, to promote lifelong learning. Working at Riverside Methodist Hospital, we are provided with a few different options to further our education. There is tuition reimbursement, which I am currently taking advantage of. There is also the Grad Program, which pays for all of your tuition and books, but is much more selective in who is accepted. Furthering our education and keeping ourselves updated with all of the continuing changes of nursing definitely......

I Think I Am/Am Not an Entrepreneur. I Am a ... Entrepreneur Because...

..."I think I am/am not an entrepreneur. I am a ... entrepreneur because...” 15/9/201 Introduction In this assignment, I will explain as to why I think I am a lifestyle entrepreneur and the reasons as to why I think I am classified as this type of entrepreneur. I will discuss what a lifestyle entrepreneur is as well as the major motivations that form an integral part of the lifestyle entrepreneur’s choice to follow the specified path. The following motivations of autonomy, family and leisure time, passion and intrinsic reward and satisfaction as well as life quality will be discussed at different stages of my assignment. I will also show how some of these motivations integrate together to form a basis for the lifestyle entrepreneur. What is a lifestyle entrepreneur? As noted by Henderson (2002:49), to support a desired lifestyle or provide a family income is reasons as to why a lifestyle entrepreneur will start a new venture. These entrepreneurs also seek independence and control over their own schedule. Whilst Mottiar (2007:67) argues that a lifestyle entrepreneur is concerned with maintaining income at a level sufficient enough to provide them and their family with adequate funds to allow them to enjoy their chosen lifestyle. As can been seen in the above, lifestyle entrepreneurs aim to make as much money as they require to live and maintain the lifestyle of their choice (Janssen-Selvadurai, 2010:187). Important components to the lifestyle entrepreneur that act as......

I Am What I Am

...“I Am What I AM” is a musical which was on shown in January in Sheung Wan Civic Centre. The story of the musical is actually a real-life story adapted from a Singapore transgender person, Abigail, about making a tough decision of being loyal to her true gender. Abigail’s frustration of whether to take the Sex Reassignment Surgery (“SRS” for short) or not was exquisitely presented in the musical, so as to communicate with the audience and encourage them to have an in-depth review about the related issue. Why Abigail hopes to be a female rather than a male? To uncover the underlying reasons, let’s start with knowing more about her life in early stage. Being born as a boy, Abigail felt that he was a girl deeply inside his mind. Liked other normal little girls, he loved playing Barbie dolls and doll’s houses. Presenting girls’ characteristics in his childhood gave him a derogatory nickname, “Girlish Boy”, which was frequently called by his classmates in primary school. Trying to conceal his female mind, Abigail always made himself looks like stronger, self-reliant through behaviors, thoughts but seems that was not successful. His classmates continued to laugh at him with offensive languages. When he grew up, he felt much more natural and comfortable to play with girls while sensed shy to play with boys. In Singapore, boys who aged 18 had to serve their duty in military. During that period, Abigail took baths in late evening after all the other soldiers took their baths. It......

Who Am I

...Who am I? What makes me who I am? What makes me act the way I act? What is my personality really like? These are just a few of the questions that I will attempt to answer in this essay. These questions are very complex and cannot be answered in exact terms. However I will use the personality theories of Sigmund Freud and Abraham Maslow to answer these questions and many more as accurately as possible. Sigmund Freud would say the unconscious level of my mind contains the desires, wishes, needs, and impulses that we are not aware of under normal circumstances. He would say that my mind is composed of three systems- the id, ego, and superego. The id operates on the pleasure principle. The ego operates on the reality principle. The superego refers to the moral aspects of personality. These three systems fight for control. In my opinion I feel that my ego is winning this fight, with my id in a close second. My id demands pleasure at all costs. However my ego knows that I must obtain this pleasure appropriately or I will land myself in big trouble. I think my superego is really losing this battle. I make choices that for the most part obtain pleasure but do not get me in big trouble. However I rarely if ever make decisio The word ˜personality' has many definitions. Personality and the mind are known to some people as ˜unpredictable'. Many have tried to crack its secrets by coming up with various theories. Most people would define ˜personality' as an individual's character, or......

It is a core concept that individuals differ in how they learn. In the perspective of supporters, teacher should evaluate the student's learning style. Although there is sufficient obvious for differences in individual thinking and ways of processing various types of information, few studies have reliably tested the validity of using learning styles in education. On the opposite side, critics say there is no evidence that identifying an individual student's learning style produces better outcomes. 2.0 VAK Learning Style There are consist of two learning style. Am Emitter

...AM emitter Introduction: This is the second project done in Communication Systems Lab, the first one was an FM transmitter and it was to communicate via radio transmission using FM modulation technique, and this one is the AM emitter, and the purpose of this project is to create an AM emitter at a bandwidth around 1000Hz. Now what is an AM emitter? An AM emitter is a circuit builds to modulate the message signal and transmit it, where the amplitude of the carrier signal varies in direct propagation with the message signal. It is limited in power but provides amplitude modulation of voice over the medium waveband. Circuit: Procedure: We connect the circuit as shown, but first we de attach the audio circuit that is connected to the oscillator by 4.7uF capacitor, and using a capacitor of 100pf, and then we connect the oscilloscope at the antenna. When I didn’t obtain a sine wave on the oscilloscope, I by the help of the instructor Dr Amin Abillamaa, connect the inductor to the emitter of the first transistor. After this I got a very high sine wave so I substituted that capacitor from 100pf to 1000pf (1nf), and then we got a carrier signal, and also we replace the variable capacitor by a 330pf. Before connecting the audio part, we connect the function generator to the 4.7uF capacitor and we set the parameters to 3Vpp and 800Hz. Then we remove the oscilloscope and we connect the alligator as an antenna and we change in the radio frequency to het a pure......

...Strategic Learning Plan Goal 1- Studying: I will increase my study time by 2-3 hours each week. * I will plan out my schedule and see what I need to study for most by seeing when class is and what class I am having a hard time with. Also when test or quizzes for that class is. * For example in Soc 101 I have a quiz on Wednesday. So on Monday and Tuesday in my room I will review the material that will be on the quiz and think of questions that will be on the quiz. I plan on studying for an hour or two from 6-8. I will do this because I want to pass with a good grade. Goal 2- Reading: I will read the material until I can comprehend and learned what I need to know. * While reading I will highlight, underline, and margin write by important facts that will help me when I go back to study. * For example in Soc 101 I have to read two chapter each week for homework. So while reading my textbook I will highlight import facts such as terms and statistics. Also margin write so I summarize that section and makes sense to me. I will do this on Monday at around 6pm and my room, to succeed int his class. Goal 3- Note taking: Just improve note taking techniques * Just write the main idea or key statements not waste time writing everything. * For all classes write what I need to and not worry about unimportant fact or things I already know. This will help improve my grades overall and be a better student. Goal 4- Test taking strategies: Be better prepared......

Wuw ÃDepartment of Information and Computer Education, National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, and National Taichung Nursing College, Taichung, Taiwan wDepartment of Information and Computed Education, National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan Abstract This paper reports our implementation of a handheld wireless environment to support Jigsaw cooperative learning activities in a college setting. A quasi-experimental research design was conducted to investigate the effects of using handhelds, as well as issues associated with the use of handheld technology. Two intact classes of fourth-year students from a five-year junior nursing college participated in the experiment. Our findings showed that handheld tools enhanced both students’ attitudes and performance in learning, and promoted better interactions among students and instructors. We also found that the handheld technology was not sophisticated enough to support cooperative learning goals without full support from a technology specialist. collaboration, empirical, handhelds, ICT use, nursing, post-secondary. Keywords Introduction With recent advances in wireless communication technology and mobile devices, the application of handheld technology in education is expected to increase. Handhelds, also known as palmtop computers, were originally designed as personal organizers or note takers, and now......

Who Am I? Why Am I Here?

...Who Am I? My name is xxxxxxxxx and I am a woman originally born in the city of xxxxxx, xxxxx. I came to the United States at age five and I recently became xxx years old on my birthday, this past xxxx x, xxxx. As a woman of Hispanic origin, I am very rich in Latin and Central American Indian culture. I grew up with my mom and aunts speaking a derivative of Pig Latin. I have a Spanish style of cooking and mostly all my plates are xxxxxx dishes. I may have grown up in the states all my life, but I’m almost 100% rooted in Spanish customs. As a person, I identify myself as a child of God. Spiritually, I am always seeking knowledge and wisdom since I believe it comes from God. My faith is deeply rooted in my confession, that I am a spirit who will one day return to my maker. Holding such a belief has its advantages. For example, I generally do not abide by society’s norm of what I should be, or my role in life. I also believe that if I’m still here, there’s work to be done. I love to explore Biblical concepts and beliefs. As a mother I am an attentive soul. I’m always looking out for my children and their personal interest. I like to give them their space, but yet hold them accountable. I tend to be conservative with my children and do not try to push them beyond their limits. To me, being who we are and doing what we do, just as we choose whether to build a relationship with God, is a very personal matter. While most people do not like my parenting style, I think it’s......

Who Am I

...Who Am I 8/1/2015 This self-analysis gives an idea of who I am, what I believe in, what kinds of behaviors I have, what my gender roles are, what social influences I have, what I see as my group dynamics, and how I feel about relationships. This is all about me and who I am inside as a person, my very own self- analysis. I have changed a lot over the last few years so if I had written this a few years ago I am sure it would have been answered differently. I am a survivor. I believe myself to be a survivor because I have brought myself to a place in my life that will keep me alive. I have battled with drugs and alcohol for most of my life and have been clean for 7 years now, all of my own doing. I have lived on the streets and fought battles with myself teaching myself to live independent of others to survive. I am independent. I can live on my own and take care of myself and my family without the help of others. I have been to the bottom of the worst places in life and that has taught me to not be carless with what I have, and know that I can lose it all again in the blink of an eye. I am happy. I enjoy life. I have lived my life in dark places for so long. I love life so much now. I enjoy family and friends and all of the time I have with them, knowing that every day I wake is another blessing to me. I have to say I believe myself to be both independent and interdependent. I think independent because of all that I have achieved in my life because of all of the......

Ams Report

...I am doing my report on the new row crop application system of the Balzer liquid manure handling equipment. Working on a large hog farm in Bloomfield, IN and just having added a Balzer Eliminator 7500 gallon slurry tank (non-row crop) to our operation I felt a report on this subject would be appropriate. The new addition to the Balzer Manufacturing Company is the row-crop application system. This system will allow producers to apply the nutrients needed into standing corn or beans in crucial times of the year. The row-crop edition will be on a 120 inch wheelbase needed for 30 inch rows. The application will be equipped with 18.4R38 tires. Balzer Independent Steerable Axle System allows for easier turning on end rows as well as a smooth ride over rough terrain. Grease banks are conveniently located for easy maintenance on the steering system. The Rite-Rate system is added as an option for precise, consistent application throughout the field. The standard Bull Pull hitch allows the hitch pin to move for smooth towing and less stress on critical areas. The system is equipped with 2- wheel brakes, but can be used with up to 6.It comes standard with hydraulic drive and PTO drive is optional. A row-crop manure handling system would be a very rewarding addition to any operation. By having this option to side dress manure could well cut down on a producer’s application of fertilize, reducing quite a large portion of a producer’s expense. If we farmed more acres on our......
