Deep River
Shusaku Endo’s book, Deep River traces four tourists going on a spiritual journey to the country of India. These four Japanese people converge at the Ganges River, the holy river in Varanasi. This is where they want to reconcile themselves with their past experiences they had in their life. Isobe is a man that lost his wife from cancer and goes to India to try and find her reincarnated. Kigushi is another person traveling to India, who is a Japanese, World War 2 war veteran wanting to perform a ceremony for all the soldiers in Burma who died. These two characters endure a pilgrimage where a transformation is made in their life.
Isobe was a man who had a wife, Kieko and a daughter but focused on his job everyday. He did not give or show affection to his wife and had several affairs. He did not think of his wife as a companion but rather just as a figure in his life. As the narrator states, “He was the kind of man who was embarrassed to reveal his own feelings openly in words or on his face, the kind of husband who hoped for a relationship in which his would understand him even if he did not utter a word” (12). His world changes when his wife gets diagnosed with a severe case of cancer and ends up dying. Keiko’s last words to Isobe are that she wants him to find her after she dies because she knows that she will be reincarnated. He can’t cope with the loss of his wife and finally realizes how much Keiko meant to him. Isobe carries the burden of not loving his wife as much as she loved and cared for him.
Kiguchi finds himself in India seeking his guilt of all the soldiers that fought and died in Burma during World War 2. When Kiguchi was in Burma, he catches malaria where his friend Tsukada stays behind with him to help him. The narrator describes the experience, “Just as a wounded…...

Research Paper Huckleberry Finn, Candide, Don Juan

...Three works of literature, labeled immoral, unfit to read and even satanic, completely criticized for their use of vulgar language and “blasphemes” way of speaking their mind. What critics fail to see is the true creativity of the humor in Candide, the morality and kindness in Huckleberry Finn, and the passion of Don Juan. All three of these great works of literature have suffered the injustice of biased criticism and have been rejected from public schools, which wastes their educational potential. Candide has been place into the index of prohibited books, Huckleberry Finn has been banned almost every public school, and Don Juan has succumb to a similar fate. What people don’t understand is that these novels and works of poetry can show us more about how humans treat each other, how realistic some ridiculous things can be, and how we can understand ourselves. Candide is a novel written by the French writer Voltaire, it’s about a germen man by the name of Candide who goes on quite a journey meeting a variety of people, constantly running into political and religious figures with bad results. Meeting up with old friends and characters he believed dead, the novel consists of unrealistic situations in a comedic fashion but in the end, through all the hell he can say let’s just forget about it and move on in our life. This story can give you a real life perspective and show you that life shouldn’t be taken seriously, if a guy like Candide can go through what he did without a......

San Juan

...SAN JUAN DE GUIMBA: A BRIEF HISTORY It was the 20th of February 1865 when a group of Ilocano settlers in wooden carts and horsebacks arrived at a vast forested plain northwest of the Binituan River in Nueva Ecija. They cleared the land and started planting the loamy soil with the rice seeds they brought with them. They called the new land San Juan de Guimba in honor of the patron saint the settlers brought from Ilocos, and of the pot-making industry called “gebba” which they used to do in the old land. Thus was the origin of Guimba and its rice industry as it rose to become the province of Nueva Ecija’s traditional top rice producing area. Soon more settlers arrived mostly from the old towns of Bacarra, Paoay, and Candon of the Ilocos provinces. Among the families who came were the Galapons, Mateos, Cudals, Padres, Cayogs, Romanos, Silvestres, Capinpuyans, Batangans, Faigals, Sumawangs, and Catabonas. What would be the town of Guimba is a relatively organized community when the Spanish colonialists arrived and appointed Don Luis De Ocampo as the first Gobernadorcillo. The Spanish left and the Americans came and in 1912, the town’s name was abbreviated to Guimba with Don Alfonso Faigal as the first Alcalde Mayor. St. John the Evangelist though remains to be its patron saint. The first municipal hall was also built during this year in what is now known as Faigal Street. The Plaza Municipal evolved and what will become the public market started its commerce. In 1963, a......

Concert Report on Juan-Carlos Formell Y Son Radical at Guantanamera

...Juan-Carlos Formell y Son Radical at Guantanamera The group Juan-Carlos Formell y Son Radical performed Sunday at Guantanamera, a Cuban restaurant near Columbus Circle. The venue of Guantanamera provided Juan-Carlos Formell y Son Radical with a setting not unlike a typical New York jazz and dinner club; the audience members sat at the bar or a table eating dinner. A trio of musicians made up the band: the Cuban bandleader, Juan-Carlos Formell, played an electric-accoustic guitar and also provided lead vocals; Gustavo Amarante, a Brazilian, played electric bass guitar; and Jesus "Chuito" Quintero, a Venezuelan, on percussion--"Chuito" not only played the congas, but the bongos as well. The instrumentation of congas, bongos, and guitars, derived from both Afro-Cuban and European music traditions suggested the music itself may be son and would also "creatively fuse equal amounts of white- and black-derived musical features" (Manuel 43). Professor Washburne repeatedly mentioned in class the importance of actual Cubans to classifying music as authentic, and although the supporting members of the group were not truly Cuban or even from the Caribbean, Formell's heritage as "truly Cuban" and as the bandleader gave the performance an authenticity that may not exist if Formell was Puerto Rican. Formell seemed to have a unique skin tone, suggesting that he would fall under the classification of "creole" which is defined by Stuart Hall as having the......

...ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR Organizational behavior is the study of both group and individual performance and activity within an organization. Internal and external perspectives are two theories of how organizational behavior can be viewed by companies. Question that is asked in the Manager of Don Juan: What are the common problems that your company/establishment usually encounter with regard to the organizational behavior? Actually for now, we doesn’t have any problems with our employees but there are times where we are having problems in our organizations like misunderstandings, lack of manpower and tardiness of an employee. Of course, everybody has their own attitude, sometimes they are not listening on each other’s suggestions the reason why some employees doesn’t understand each other’s point. It is difficult for me to handle this kind of problem because we’re just in one team, and they don’t care to understand the point of each other. Another common problem is that although we have lots of waitresses, still, we are not capable to satisfy the guests without the waiters. We all know that men are more flexible than women. Our restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and also on midnight because Don Juan is also a bar and because of this, we need waiters more than waitresses specially on midnight to satisfy the needs of the guests really fast. Another problem is that employees are sometimes late, tardy, and stressed. As a manager, I’m always asking them what’s their......
