Reflection I thought it was very interesting when Katie came and talked to us last week. It was sort of a change of pace for us as everything we had talked about had been geared towards careers and majors. But her talking about nutrition and the need to stay healthy was, in my opinion, just as important as all of the other stuff we have talked about. When you are healthy and feeling good, it makes everything in your life better including your job. When she told us how our plates should be arranged and how much of each food group we should have on the plate was very interesting. I didn’t realize that you would need to eat that much fruit and vegetables compared to the other groups. I thought it would be about a fourth together, but it was actually closer to half the plate of vegetables and fruit. Another cool thing she talked about was how to eat healthy in the dining courts. That is a very big issue because it is buffet style and when you see that fresh tray of cookies coming out it can be very tempting to eat about five of them. The step where she said you should rethink your drink was pretty good, because since I’ve been here I haven’t drunk any pop or carbonated drinks, pretty much only water, and I can definitely tell a difference. I feel so much better and not as lethargic as I used to. The last topic she hit on might be one of the biggest factors for the dreaded freshman fifteen, the mini fridge. She said that it should be filled with low fat cheese, vegetables, fruit, water, nuts, berries, and many other healthy things. She also said to pay attention to the Nutrition Facts label on all the food you buy to see how healthy it really…...

The Sun Also Rises - Jake Barnes & Ernest Hemingway - a Comparison

...Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises Jake Barnes & Ernest Hemingway – A Comparison “'Hey, Kitty,' said Ernest, 'I'm taking your advice. I'm writing a novel full of plot and drama.' He gestured ahead towards Harold and Bill. 'I'm tearing those bastards apart,' he said. 'I'm putting everyone in it and that kike Loeb is the villain.“ - Hemingway (Baker p.234) Table of contents: 1. Setting, Characters & Background 2. Impotence & War Wound 3. Women 4. San Fermín 5. Interests & Characteristics Bibliography The Sun Also Rises was Hemingway's first novel, published in 1926, written several years after he served in World War I. It deals with the postwar life of expatriates and veterans living in Paris (Europe), who are also called the Lost Generation. They all go to Spain together, to enjoy the bullfights. The book, like most of his early fiction, is based on Hemingway's experiences and acquaintances, therefore many parallels can be found by comparing the novel with Hemingway's life during the twenties. In this essay I want show similarities and differences between the narrator Jake Barnes and Hemingway himself. 1. Setting, Characters & Background In the beginning, the story of The Sun Also Rises is set in Paris in the twenties: expatriates and veterans living an aimless and unfulfilling life with a lot of drinking and parties and travelling. There is for example Jake Barnes, the narrator and protagonist of the story. He is an American expatriate and......

...whether Jake’s actions are in or out of “his scope of employment.” Jake states that he is doing his job thoroughly and perfectly due to law requirements. Jake’s actions are within his scope of employment. Along with changing oil, Jake is inspecting cars for safety issues for the customer. As a service technician Jake is within his scope of employment to actually check cars during service. Inspecting the car as well is part of Jake’s job function as a mechanic. When Jake implied he could be hurt worse than he thought and he might have a workers’ compensation case he was out of his scope of employment. Jake was upset at his long hours and no overtime pay that he was holding his injury over his boss’ head. Jake did not have a right to do this to Herman. 2. Explain whether or not Herman is responsible for Jake’s injury. Herman is responsible for Jake’s injury. Jake was on the job working when his injury occurred. Herman is responsible to ensure Jake’s hand is looked at and treated by a medical professional for a clear diagnosis. If Jake continues to work with an injury he could do more damage to his hand or injure others. By doing more damage to his hand, Jake may not be able to continue to perform his job function. This could be expensive to Herman in the long run because he may need to hire and train a new mechanic while Jake’s hand heals or the possibility of Jake not being able to return to work. Jake could also damage a customer’s car while working with an......

...Historical Background It is necessary to examine the historical context of Muslim terrorism in the United States to understand the evolvement of Muslim extremism today. Juergensmeyer (2003) supports this stance by stating that contemporary acts of violence are influenced by historical violence perpetrated in the religious past. The assumption could be made that Muslim extremism in the United States is a more recent phenomenon; on the contrary, this is not true. By understanding history enlightens to where foundations and structures were built to support Muslim extremism and terrorism activities that exist in the United States today. One of the first elements of Muslim influence in the United States occurred in the early 20th century with the formation of the Moors Science Temple founded in 1913 by Noble Drew Ali in Newark, New Jersey and then later reorganized in Chicago in 1919 (Vidino, 2009; Dannin, 2002). Ali’s interpretation of Islam mixed Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroaster and Confucius (Vidino, 2009). In 1929, Ali was charged with and imprisoned for murdering Claude Greene an opponent within the organization (Dannin, 2002). Shortly after being released from bail, Ali disappeared and was presumed dead because he was never found (Dannin, 2002). With the influence of the Moors, the Nation of Islam, another unorthodox organization of Islam, was founded in 1930 by Wallace Farad in Detroit. Farad claimed he was a prophet to “awaken a dead nation in the West; to teach......

Apparently Jake has been working overtime resulting in fatigue, falling level of alertness and possibly leading to his injury. His age has also contributed to his injury as his arthritis would have caused impediments to free movement of his body, and the constrained movement would have contributed to his injury. However Jake cannot blame Herman for his problems arising partly out of his own lack of care, more importantly as he is in a manger cadre and senior staff who is expected to guide others under his control. This sends out a wrong signal to Herman as well as his own colleagues and juniors. Jake being now in the management cadre cannot ask for overtime and has to do the job of oil change that is within the scope of service manager’s responsibility. However Jake can demand Herman to provide additional staff to take on the additional tasks of free oil change for his cars. Jake should also insist on a work measurement study and implementing systems to measure quantum of work output and link it to compensation, to decide on the quantum of work that can be expected from one worker and manager, during a normal work day and come up with methods of meeting the additional work load through additional hands. Jake should ask the question, if his day to day job is reflecting his managerial position given to......

Employers Duty of Care

...fraud.” Whether Jake is acting in or out of his scope of employment depends on Jakes job description. Jake has recently been promoted to Service Manager and receives salary pay, Jake stated that he still does the same job, even with a new job title and salary pay. The question that one would need to ask is, what is Jake supposed to be doing? Should he be working on cars or supervising his employees? If Jake is not to work on cars he is acting out of the scope of his employment and vice versa. Herman didn’t mind Jake doing the oil changes; Jake was given permission to change oil for the customers, therefore when Jake cut his thumb he was acting in the scope of his employment. Jake was acting in good faith when he decided to go the extra mile to make sure the customer’s cars were thoroughly checked. 2. Explain whether or not Herman is responsible for Jake’s injury. Herman is not directly responsible for Jake’s injury but as Jake’s employer and the owner or manager of the company he is responsible for protecting the rights of his employees. Jake could seek workers compensation for his injury and the car dealership will be forced to pay for any claims that are approved. Each state has its own law and rules when it comes to workers compensation. Workers compensation laws are put in place to guarantee that employees who are injured on the job receive payment. Workers compensation laws also protect employers from employees suing their co-workes and bosses. Jake cut his......

The Lost Generation Through Cohn, Brett and Jake

...The Sun Also Rises, Jake Barnes, Robert Cohn and Lady Brett Ashley’s lives have been impacted by the outbreak of World War One. However, Cohn still lives by the pre-war values, mainly due to the fact that the war had little impact on him, unlike Jake who was injured in combat, or Brett, who lost her true love during the war. They all have characteristics that are similar with many people who were a part of what Gertrude Stein called “the lost generation”, a generation of people whose previous values were figuratively destroyed by the outbreak of World War I, and they wandered the post-war world without guidance, without a purpose. (Britannia 1 ) This is because Hemingway created these characters to symbolize a large portion of people in the 1920’s, through the characters attitudes, lifestyle and personalities. In doing so, Hemingway uses these three characters to represent different groups of people within the lost generation. Robert Cohn represents the people of the lost generation whose lives had been unaffected directly by the war, and those who still continued to live by failed the pre-war values of romance, morality and honor. Many of these people were outcasts; they were different, just like Cohn, and Cohn knew what it was like to be different. He spent a good portion of his life feeling like an outcast due to the fact that he was Jewish and Cohn never served in World War I, and was therefore typically scorned by people who had seen combat, like Jake. Cohn holds onto......

Jake

...1. Is Jake acting "in the scope of employment" or do his actions cause him to fall out of this area? Generally, an employee owes the employer duties of performance and obedience. And under their duty of performance, there is an implied condition that employees will use reasonable diligence and skill in performing their work. A duty is also imposed on an employee to follow all lawful and clearly stated instructions of the employer. Any deviation from such instruction is a violation of that duty. Whenever instructions are not clearly stated, the employee can fulfill the duty of obedience by acting in good faith and in a manner reasonable under the circumstances. Here, Herman has told Jake that he is "just supposed to change the oil..." and not check the brakes, tires, transmission, etc. So it would appear that Jake is violating his duties. However, Jake argues that "as a certified mechanic, there are standards that (he has) to live up to" and that his actions are reasonable under the circumstances. Whether Jake is "acting in the scope of employment" is a fact question to be decided by a jury. Given the circumstances, and that the overriding reason that Jake is working on the cars in the first place is Herman's free oil change it would appear that he is within the scope of employment. 2. Is Herman responsible for Jake's injury? Yes, Jake is covered under state worker's compensation laws. Under common law, employees injured on the job had to rely on contract law......
