For a business to be successful, the managers need to be leaders and team players at the same time. Russell Stover, the General Manager of BMW of Nashville effectively acts as both boss and team member for all of his associates. Through the interview process with Mr. Stover, we learned what it takes to be a manager. Consistency, communication, and enthusiasm are traits to describe his managerial style that would work for anyone in any work environment. By applying textbook ideas to real-world people and situations, connections are made from the classroom to the workplace.
Russell Stover has an interesting background that is full of exhilarating events. Becoming the GM in BMW of Nashville during 1995, Russell has seventeen years of top management experience. Prior to starting with BMW in 1992 as a new car sales manager, Mr. Stover spent three years as the manager for a Mercedes dealership. At this point in his life he discovered that his passion and favorite cars to sell were dealing with high-end European cars because of the clientele. In order to build up his proficiency and understanding of the car business, Russell hopped around minor car dealerships in Tennessee before he landed at Mercedes. Russell Stover dropped out of his second year at Middle Tennessee State University because the learning concepts were not for him. Oddly enough, after his short stint in college he got a job with Russell Stover Candy Company. Due to his name and likability, Russell was able to meet the president of the company and develop key skills he currently uses.
In chapter one an organization is defined as a collection of people who work together and coordinate actions to achieve goals. Management is in charge of guiding its direction. And the question now rise to what should BMW’s next move be. ANALYSIS It took the firm about 50 years from its first automobile in 1929 to be firmly established in North America. Method: This is a qualitative study, and in order to investigate the attitudes of the employees we have performed interviews with employees of different levels and departments at BMW Gothenburg. As a complement to the data collected during the interviews we have made observations outside and inside the facility in Gothenburg in order to broaden the impression of the culture. Analysis: Our study shows that the employees at BMW in Gothenburg perceive their culture as unique due to its cheerful and friendly atmosphere where everybody feels at ease with their work. The relationship between different organizational levels and departments is good and has developed in this direction during recent years. The employees have fun working and this is, according to them, the biggest motivating factor. Important symbols stressed are the meetings where they feel they get the opportunity to express their opinion and have discussions, events and activities outside the formal working facility and the home-baked cake made by the sales manager to reward any salesman who sells more than 30 cars in a month. The employees’ perceptions of organizational culture at the parent company are vague, but a hierarchical structure is something all respondents agree characterize German organizational culture in general and therefore also ought to be present at BMW in Germany.
