...Grading 'Waiting for Superman' Dana Goldstein | September 23, 2010 Here's what you see in Waiting for Superman, the new documentary that celebrates the charter school movement while blaming teachers unions for much of what ails American education: working- and middle-class parents desperate to get their charming, healthy, well-behaved children into successful public charter schools. Here's what you don't see: the four out of five charters that are no better, on average, than traditional neighborhood public schools (and are sometimes much worse); charter school teachers, like those at the Green Dot schools in Los Angeles, who are unionized and like it that way; and noncharter neighborhood public schools, like PS 83 in East Harlem and the George Hall Elementary School in Mobile, Alabama, that are nationally recognized for successfully educating poor children. You don't see teen moms, households without an adult English speaker or headed by a drug addict, or any of the millions of children who never have a chance to enter a charter school lottery (or get help with their homework or a nice breakfast) because adults simply aren't engaged in their education. These children, of course, are often the ones who are most difficult to educate, and the ones neighborhood public schools can't turn away. You also don't learn that in the Finnish education system, much cited in the film as the best in the world, teachers are—gasp!—unionized and granted tenure, and families benefit from......

This I Believe Essay

...This I Believe Essay June 4, 2014 Family Should Come First Most of my earliest memories do not have my biological father in them, even though he lived less than a 5 minute walk away. I grew up in what is now considered to be a "broken home" environment. Back in the seventies I lived in a trailer court with my mom and her new husband, the infamous step-dad. During this time, my ‘real' dad was moving on with his life as well, living with his new wife only three streets away. It was uncommon for him to call or come over to spend time with me, but being so young it didn’t really matter at the time. As the holidays started to fly by my stepfather began to notice that my dad was no longer showing an interest in my life. My real dad had even stopped asking me what I wanted for Christmas, and started sending money to my mom to go buy me a gift from him. Needless to say this was the last straw in my stepfathers’ eyes. What he did next, I’ll never forget. He waited for my ‘dad’ to drop off the "present money" and confronted him on the front porch. Even though I was in the living room area with my mom, I still heard this man, my 'step-dad’ stand up to my real father and tell him that “Jason doesn’t need your money. What he needs is his dad to take an interest in him, get more involved with his life and show him that family is always there for each other no matter what”. My dad became silent. I think he knew there was a lot of truth to my......

...Examine the reasons for the divorce rate in Britain today. Divorce is the legal separation of married couples. A divorce rate is the number of divorces occurring among the population of a given area during a given year. Since the 1960s there has been a great increase in the number of divorces in the United Kingdom. In Britain today, the numbers have fallen somewhat, but still stood at around 157,000 in 2001. This rate shows that about 40% of marriages will end in divorce. Some couples are more likely to divorce than others – couples such as those who marry young, those who have a child or cohabit before marriage and those where one or both partners have been married before. Functionalists are interested in divorce because they argue that a high divorce rate does not necessarily prove that marriage as a social institution is under threat. One reason for the changing rates in divorce is due to changes in the law. In previous centuries divorce was very hard to obtain, especially for women. Gradually changes in the law have made it easier for divorce to be achieved. Law changes such as equalising rights for men and women in the area of divorce, widening the grounds for divorce and making divorce cheaper are all factors which are changing the rates of divorce. Although divorce legally ends a marriage, couples find other solutions to solve the problem of an unhappy marriage; one partner leaving the other although they remain legally married (desertion); legal separation of the......

In Order to Write a Persuasive Essay, You Need to Come Up with a Few Arguments in Favor of Your Point. Here Are Some Potential Arguments for This Idea: It Makes the Children Feel Equally Loved by Both Parents. It Is Not

...Assume Equal Responsibility In Raising Children Children And Young People Essay Naturally, family is made up of mother, father, and children. Children are supposed to be raised by both parents, and we all accept that father and mother have vital roles in upbringing their children into potential and useful people to contribute to social development. However, it is quite challenging if we want to compare whether mother or father is more important. What if mother is more important, is she has to assume more responsibility, or what if father is, ought he to assume more? On my point of view, in no account should parents assume unequal responsibility due to children development sake, the difficulty of raising children, and family happiness. Whether or not children are nurtured with equal responsibility from mother and father has effect on children’s development throughout their lives. With both cares, children get full experience of live from both mother and father because what father can give to children is different from that of the mother, but it doesn’t mean one is less important than the other. Mother can teach children how to cook, how to sew, or how to deal with household chore while father can teach them how to fish, to be strong, or to protect oneself from any danger. And some circumstances children need advice from father and other circumstances, only mother is more suitable to give advice. On top of that it is also known that with both parents care, children......

REPORT ON THE EXAMINATION – A-level Sociology – SCLY2 – June 2013 SCLY2 General Most students appeared to have sufficient time to answer all questions to the best of their ability and very few committed rubric errors such as answering questions from both sections of the paper. There were some outstandingly good answers from well-prepared students; more generally, students seem to have found the set questions accessible. However, it is worth reiterating two points made in previous examination series in relation to AO2 skills. Firstly, students continue to fall short when it comes to evaluating knowledge of sociological material. Secondly, some schools and colleges appear not to be focusing sufficiently on the importance of the skill of Application in answering the Methods in Context questions 05 and 14. The legibility of......

I have chosen Salesforce.com as the organization for my analysis and believe that the description provided would help in giving a better understanding of the organization for any third party considering a position with the organization. This organization was developed about fifteen years ago with the objective of bringing together better and reinvented customer relationship management services (CRM) using the mechanism of cloud computing. They have revolutionized the process of CRM, and the way they have incorporated the entire system in cloud computing led to the foundation of a path breaking philanthropic model for them to follow. It eventually went on to become the leading enterprise in cloud ecosystems. With this system, industries and organizations are able to connect with...

...solitude is "not just a recipe for hermits" but a means to keeping society together. Individuals need a retreat from the exigencies and pressures of work in order to dialogue with God. Merton outlines some characteristics of the spiritual life that set the stage for solitude: gratitude, keeping awake, practicing humility, listening, and unifying our lives. He sees silence as "the mother of truth" and as a divine milieu. He calls the Psalms "the true garden of the solitary." By submitting ourselves to God, we foster our love for others while we are apart from them. This is "the true fruit and the true purpose of Christian solitude.” Journal 3: Harding in LLM In “I Hear Them… Calling”, the community really helped Vincent Harding realize his profession of historian and minister and rebel for a cause. He was able to make his own choice and he changed ideas, career ideas, and actual professions, many times. But his community was a steady rock for him to come back to, and to take advice from. They were invested in him, and he gave back to them in whatever profession he had. As individuals we do owe our communities, yet it isn’t in the sense of a debt. It’s more of a sense of human compassion we are expected to give back to our community, but we are also supposed to really feel when we are giving back. It’s the thought that counts. When you do something good for someone else, it’s supposed to make you feel blissful that they are happy and also that you did something good.......

Exploratoy Essay This I Do Believe

...Running head: THIS I DO BELIEVE ASSIGNMENT 5 EXPLORATORY ESSAY: THIS I DO BELIEVE KIM CARTER ENGLISH COMPOSTION PROFESSOR JANET WILLMAN NOVEMBER 07, 2011 THIS I DO BELIEVE This I do believe Some people have many different things or beliefs that they focus on to maintain and live by during challenging times in their lives. I have established a belief that gets me through challenging times in my life. “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me” (Philippian 4:13, King James Bible). As a single parent, battling with Breast Cancer, and going back to college, this I will do through Christ Jesus my strength and redeemer. As a single parent, years of raising two children by me were very difficult. There were not many times I had no time to carry out the many tasks that a good parent was required to do, nor did I have the strength. I was working night shift for twelve hours, coming home making sure that my children were prepared for the school day, figuring out what the meal would be when they returned home from school, doing house work and paying bills; all of this had to be done before I could get some rest. At some point I had no choice but to call on the name of Jesus Christ for strength to carry on. Without any hesitation I knew that “I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me”. The years have traveled on by; I am still depending on Jesus Christ for strength. A time had come in my life when the enemy had attacked my body...

I Need to See the Case Study Sample

...Kim Nguyen 2/17/16 HCM 3020 002 Case Study 1 The group that I was put in was group number two. In our group we discussed the cost and benefits of high turnover and how to reduce things. These are increases cost of turnover are since company’s hire new employee they would need to be trained. By that employee would need to stop what they are doing and take their time to train others. Companies would need to spend money on supplies since employee need to use things to get things done. Supplies would include name badges, tags, uniforms, and badges to get access to the office when it is locked. When companies hire they need to spend money for background checks as well as medical screening. Some companies even get employee cell phones to keep in contact or emergencies or even need to communicate. Since people quit from their job this company would be short staff which makes it a low quality of work. The benefits of reducing turnover would be high productivity, lower of supplies, quality of work increases, and time management. In the case the company would spend less money. The cost of turnover rate is that we wanted to change the managers. By that we want to improve managers in order to be professional and how they can be better managers, more training for them, loss of replacement of managers, and give more benefits. In group one I believed they didn’t really say anything. They have stated to bring moral down, and to keep employee motivated. By keeping those motivated......
