1. (11 points) Why is it necessary for an organization to appraise performance formally? Performance appraisals are necessary for an organization to understand each employee’s skills, abilities, and competencies. Performance appraisals are used to rate the employee’s performance. Formal performance appraisals are important to organizations because they clarify the employee’s roles and responsibilities, and helps align individual goals with organizational goals. Formal performance appraisals also allows for evaluation of the employee’s performance and contribution towards organizational goals. Formal performance appraisals can also be a learning tool for employees and management through the feedback process of the appraisal. During the feedback process, management should express what the employee has done well and they have not. Management should elaborate on ways the employee can improve performance in areas the employee does not perform well at.

2. (11 points) Identify and describe the different reasons for implementing a short-term bonus. Organizations implement short-term bonuses to improve performance, reduce costs, increase motivation and employee buy-in, and to recruit and retain employees with critical knowledge, skills, and/or abilities. Monetary bonuses for performance and completion of organizational goals can motivate employees to perform at higher rates, and help the organization retain vital employees. Organizations can also implement non-monetary incentives that will help improve job satisfaction, retention, and recruitment rates. Organizations can offer work-life initiatives, flexible work hours, and career development programs.

...Page 1 Ryan Lawson 19 April 2011 PolSci 111 Exam 2 I.Ds: 1. UNDERDEVELOPMENT- Frank reading. Underdevelopment is when a country exists with shortcomings or even lacks in areas of industrial growth, social welfare, jobs, political stability, education, and literacy. These countries typically have much poverty and unequal distribution of wealth. This is significant to comparative politics because we study how underdeveloped countries come to be more successful nation-states with prospering markets. We also study examples of countries that have failed at this. Some of the more successful countries would be Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Africa and Afghanistan would be prime examples of countries that still have trouble with underdevelopment. 2. SYNCRETISM- Sil reading. Syncretism is the strategy of Nation building that combines foreign/modern and native/traditional values. Financial Conditions Exam 2

...Financial Conditions Analysis Exam 1 Answers Part I: A friend of mine showed me this video about a year ago, after I made some half-cocked right-wing political remark, as I tend to do from time to time when my emotions are high. I consider myself to be a diehard patriot and have extreme pride in the United States of America. This video is downloaded on my computer along with other short patriotic emotion evoking videos that I have stumbled across over the years. Regardless of the political views and the affiliations that Jeff Daniels or the other members and producers of The Newsroom have this video brings up very enlightening points regarding the path that the United States has taken since its creation in 1776. I am part of the same generation that the college girl speaking in the video is associated with, and I agree to some extent with the remarks made in the video “None of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period.” This is a strong statement to agree with but I do. Over the recent thanksgiving break I we fortunate to hear stories from my father about growing up as well as from several elder members in the community. It made me consider what the past generations have contributed to this country and each generations “mindset”. You had the Greatest Generation which represents those who lived through, fought in, and supported the greatest war in the history......

Hr434 Exam 1

...HR 434 Take Home Exam #1 Due Sunday night of week #4 Name:__Jessica Washington_______________ 1. (10 points) What changes are occurring in the workforce relative to the kinds of work employees are performing? Before there was computers to do all the work in manufacturing companies, employers were spending up to 40 cents on the dollar for base pay and compensation packages for employees. Due to all the computer being used today this number has gone down along with the manufacturing employment. Today, less than 20 percent of the workforce is involved in manufacturing. More people are now working in service-related industries and jobs. More than 70 percent of all workers perform what is known as service jobs. Most service-sector organizations are heavily labor concentrated, and it is not unusual for service-related companies to spend 40 cents and sometimes as high as 80 cents of each revenue dollar for employee compensation costs. As you can see service-related companies spend much more in compensation costs than what was being spent in the manufacturing economy. Due to the work being heavily labor concentrated it is very necessary for them to compensate them accordingly. 2.
