‘How Should I Touch You?’ Would you prefer a nurse of the same sex or one of opposite sex than you to be touching you? In this case, the research is being done on intimate touches. As nurses, we spend a lot of time doing one on one with our patients; we touch patients when performing assessments, when we want to provide comfort or showing care. The aim of this research was to find out whether or not patients had more concerns from male or female nurses when it comes to intimate touches, the study wanted to see the attitudes or response of the ordinary person when it comes to touching. Finally, because there have not been much research done on the subject, this research wanted to provide guidance on how intimate touches should be provided by nurses.
Quantitative or Qualitative This qualitative research was performed in a small group of 24 ordinary individuals who had no relations with the healthcare field. Using semi structured interviews; these individuals were separated into small focus groups, these groups were not designed to obtain consensus but rather to get a variety of experiences, views and attitudes. In addition, the participants who were from urban regions of the Western United States, had to have the ability to consent and speak in English. The researchers use the same questionnaire for each group, they also ask any follow-up questions to allow for more detailed responses. Following the interviews, the researchers separated themselves in order to review information on their own; afterward, the researchers held a discussion session to compare responses.
Communication and Respect The participants in this particular research were predominantly Caucasians with an age ranged of 19 to 76 years old, some of them had even receive intimate touches from nurses in the past. At the end of the research period once all the data was gathered, researchers found the following topics to be the major concerns for all the participants:
Communicate with me. Communication was the most important for these participants; in fact, they insist that the nurse must communicate to them what was going to be done before it was done. They wanted the nurse to act in a professional manner and showed them respect; they expected to be addressed by last names unless they give permission to do otherwise; while providing care, the participant preferred to be addressed instead of others in the room. Furthermore, they expected the nurse’s appearance to neat, have good hygiene, and above all not smell like they have been smoking.
Give me choices.
In all walks of life, people don’t like the feeling of being powerless. Along with communication, the participants wanted the choice of whether or not they could be touched in an intimate way. They wanted to be involved, if possible they wanted to perform task themselves instead of someone else; while capable, they wanted to make the decision and have more control.
Ask me about gender. Participant’s opinion varied when it came to gender. Some participants depending on age didn’t care one way or another who was doing the touching; as long as they were told and given the choice. Others mentioned their concern for the nurse’s sexual orientation, while others yet prefer a same-gender chaperone in the room.
Touch me professionally, not too fast and not to slow. The nurse providing the touches needed to show professionalism and confidence in the eyes of the participant. The participants wanted eye contact, gloved hands and clean equipment, when being touched they prefer the touches to be not so fast and not too slow that it gives the appearance of wrong doing. They expect the nurse to ask for feedback, provide and maintain their privacy.
Conclusion
This research though it was small, was design to give nurses and medical establishments relevant information regarding patient’s feelings and ideas about intimate touches. Base on the participant’s answer, nurses need to be mindful when deciding how and where to touch patients, they must act professional, most of all, nurses need to be mindful of their verbal and non-verbal cues. I believe these types of research are necessary to ensure that nurses have a greater understanding of how they are impacting others in their care. Furthermore, these researches will help in providing education and set guidelines for all nursing staff.

...Abby Merschman 8th Grade The Gift of Wisdom The gift of wisdom is what you would call a revelation gift. You have to receive this gift from God. The gift of wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit. Meaning, it is part of the Holy Spirit. I don’t think that you can earn these type of gifts by studying and learning, God grants this gift to you, but you can also ask. The gift of wisdom is sort of like the gift of knowledge, but different because knowledge is understanding a situation, circumstance, or even a plan from God. Wisdom is different; it is a gift from God, not a plan or circumstance of knowing something. Both are revelation gifts. I think wisdom is having a sense of direction, and being led by the Holy Spirit. When being led by the Holy Spirit, God gives you the wisdom to follow and learn. Would you accept this gift from God? Wisdom is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is available to all Christians, not just Catholics. Wisdom can also teach us to love our world. You must ask for this gift of wisdom. My confirmation definition for wisdom is: Wisdom helps us to see and understand god’s plan in our lives and in the world around us. Wisdom can be very helpful in our world because it can lead you to the right decisions and understand what God wants you to do with your life. I am not sure what I want to do with my life, but maybe if I ask God, then he will give me the gift of wisdom and I’ll know. Sources: Christ Centered mall.com...

Should You Buy or Rent?

... Erin Goff Managerial Economics BUS 640 Should you Buy or Rent a House? Instructor Bolden 06/04/2012 Abstract One of the biggest decisions people will make is if they should buy or rent a home. There are many advantages and disadvantages in each decision. Explicit costs are easily seen by consumers. Implicit costs and opportunity costs are not always recognized and often looked over when making decisions. I wanted to see the costs in terms of both of these. I am focusing on the costs of each in order to get the total economic cost in the end. The economic cost is able to give me a value for both renting and buying over 30 years. My analysis has led me to the conclusion that buying over the long term is going to be the best choice. When you decide that is it time to move to a new home, is it better to rent or purchase? I will talk about this topic in detail in the following paper. I am currently facing this decision myself, along with many other Americans every day. I am currently renting, with the current economy and low interest rates I am looking at buying a home. I wanted to look at the costs of renting verses buying so that I can see the factors and costs involved in the decision making. Whether to buy or rent is a question that most people face in their life. This is a big decision for many people and involves many factors. It relies on where people are in life and where they want to be, however it also does have economic impacts as well. Being that it is one...

How Should I Live

...How Should I Live? With each decision, we constantly ask ourselves, “Is this the right decision?” Sooner or later, we are all presented with the task to choose between what is right and what is easy. In one of my favorite novel series, Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore says to Harry, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” (Rowling 1998, 219) This is true. Our decisions in life, our struggles, selections, and choices, are the bindings to our stories; ultimately holding together what makes us who we are, just as Dumbledore said. How should we live our lives? It is not a question that can be simply stated in a few words. One word out of the posed question is the main subject- “live”. What does it mean to truly live and what is the best way to do it? I think it is a mixture of many things. However, out of many lifestyles that involve moral behavior, I think the life of an altruist is an extremely honorable one, and it is one by which I want to model my life. In order to do good, one must know evil. So, what is evil? What makes good people do bad things? According to Philip Zimbardo, “evil consists in intentionally behaving in ways that harm, abuse, demean, dehumanize, or destroy innocent others -- or using one’s authority and systemic power to encourage or permit others to do so on your behalf” (Zimbardo 2007, 5). Throughout history, we have seen multiple examples of evil acts; from the Rwandan Genocide to Abu Ghraib to the......

When You Love You Should Not Say "God Is in My Heart, " but Rather, "I Am in the Heart of God."

...When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, "I am in the heart of God." When you love you should believe that you are in his/her heart. For me these quotations teach us to have trust in our love once just like when giving trust in God. Trust is the very thing that everybody in this world desires, or at least should desire from one another. Who wants to have a friendship or relationship without trust? Nobody does. Without trust, there is no friendship, and without friendship, there is no love. I believe that trust is an even greater compliment than to be loved! I believe George Macdonald said it best when he stated "To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved." When I read this quote for the first time, I thought to myself, "Wow that is so true. How can you be loved if you are not trusted first?" It is a special thing to be trusted by someone. Having trust is very important. It’s a big part in a relationship. Being truthful is the key to establishing trust in any type of relationship. In a romantic type of relationship, jealousy can be a major cause for a lack of trust. Both parties must have trust. In any case of relationship, trust is built, earned, and maintained. For example: If you had an ex who cheated on you, you might start experiencing trust issues in relationships with others especially when you get close to one another. It may be difficult and you may end up not being able to trust the other person. When someone loses your......

How Should You Engage with Issue

...How much money do colleges and universities make because of their athletes? It is safe to say, they make millions. The top NCAA executives are paid about 1 million every year and coaches make about $100,000. How much to the college players make $0! Let us really clear up this picture! Being an athlete is a full-time job. On a typical day, a player will wake up before classes, about 5am, get a lift or conditioning session in, go to classes until 3 or 4 p.m., go to practice, go to mandatory study hall, and then finish homework or study for a test. College athletes end their day around 10pm. From an article "Why College Athletes should be Paid" by Tyson Hartnett, he shared a story about a roommate who played while in college. "For a little extra money to see a movie or go out to dinner once a week, my freshman roommate worked a job at the university, earning about $7/hour. He would work his butt off all day, with two or sometimes three basketball training sessions, plus classes and homework, and go to that job for a few hours late at night. He would come back exhausted, but he needed whatever money they would pay him. However, once the season started up, he couldn't work that job anymore. We were on the road all the time, even gone for two straight weeks at one point. The teachers let us do our work from the road, but the job wasn't going to pay you just because you were playing basketball on a road trip. The team gave us meal money (about $7 per meal) so we could get chips and...

How Children Should Be Raised

...How children should be raised Our upbringing has a critical importance for us. It makes us who we are and has a great influence on our way of living. Today, most parents try to raise their children to become as perfect as can be. Kids are forced into education and have become victims of insecurity because of the major pressure the civilization puts on their shoulders. These methods of raising children have caused great debate. 1. In text 1, Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld tells about how it was being raised by her mother Amy Chua. Her Chinese mother has recently received a lot of critic on her new book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which is described as “how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids” (p. 2, l. 4). Though most people have criticized her mother’s raising technique, Sophia Chua thanks her mother for pushing her to do that extra limit. She says her mother’s “tough love” parenting methods actually has raised her to be an independent thinker who has lived her whole life at 110 percent. Mother and writer Amy Chua has surely used strict parenting, not letting her kids attend to a sleepover or even having a playdate, making her playing violin and piano in her sparetime. Sophia Chua uses an example of how her mother and dad pushed her to learn something new in a school-assignment by not letting her interview her grandparents, which would have been the easy way out, but instead pushing her to interview a terrifying Israeli paratrooper. All in all, Amy Chua......

“How Should Managers Handle Tough Management Decisions”

...Ethical Issues “How Should Managers Handle Tough Management Decisions” Questions for Discussion 1. Why is it important to focus on motivating employees who survive a layoff? It is important to focus on motivating employees who survive a layoff because employees “left behind” often ask themselves the following questions: Is this really over? Is this just the first round? Why am I staying and not them? Contrary to some management expectations about employees working harder after a reduction in force, employees may cut back on their work production and efficiency. They may withdraw from company social activities and regress to a point where they are in danger of being discharged from employment. (Beier, 2014) "It's natural for people to have mixed feelings about keeping their jobs when co-workers have been let go," says Robert Hosking, executive director. "Layoff survivors often experience guilt about being the ones who stay while also working in an environment marked by uncertainty."(Winter, 2009) This is where managers perform a critical function. Managers can help layoff survivors to rediscover and reconnect with their own motivation, direction, and goals to become more fully engaged employees. 2. To what extent is Conaty's advice consistent with equity and expectancy theory? Equity theory emphasizes the need for managers to pay attention to employees' perception of what is fair and equitable. No matter how fair management thinks the organization's policies,...

How Should You Treat People with Disabilities

...How should you treat people with disabilities? 1. Treat PWDs like you want to be treated. 2. Talk to PWDs directly instead of their personal attendants. 3. Ask a PWD first instead of automatically assuming in what the PWD wants or needs. 4. Do not stare. 5. Do not treat adult PWDs as children. 6. Do not call PWDs the terms "Special Needs Person" or "Special Person". The same way you would hope to be treated. And that is with DIGNITY & RESPECT at all times, always remember they are people first and foremost. They have the same rights as you or I, and that most are very capable of making choices and decisions for themselves. Be patient caring and understanding, always offer assistance, and wait for a reply, before trying to help, as I have seen many people given an ear full for not giving them the chance to do for themselves. What not to do Never make assumptions, especially about their intellectual abilities, as this is a sure way of being given a thorough dressing down. Don't pity them as this will give them cause to dislike you, they don't want pity. Don't treat them with disrespect or call them derogatory names, that refer to their disability or mental state, e.g retard etc, as this will offend them and anyone who maybe with them. Never take over anything they are trying to do, ask if they would like help, and back off if they no. I work with people with disabilities and have seen many people given a ear full......

Hi, How Can I Help You?

..."Hi, Can I Help You?" It was so dark and cold. I couldn't stop counting the drops that hit my windshield. 7,8,9,10,11....constantly missing one, I would restart counting. I didn't want to focus on anything else while on my way to see him. Counting the drops helped keep my head calm. Although, it also helped me nearly get into a car crash. I should pay more attention at what's in front of me. Like the whole slew of cars during this bitch of a rainstorm. Nearly four years it was since I last saw him. Four years since I had last saw his boney frame and unchanged, soiled clothing. Four years since I thought this world was just compiled of shit and dirt. And four years since I couldn't wait for him to be taken away, to see what life is like without him. Maybe he had changed or maybe he was still drinking away the tiniest bit of man he had left. Hoping he would remain the drunk he always was, I pulled up to the house he supposedly was squatting in. Remembering the address I read on the restraining order documents, I couldn't stop repeating the numbers to myself. Stomach twisted, I walked up to the house. I looked at what, essentially, resembled who and what my dad was. A mangy, dirty, and neglected structure. Hesitantly knocking on "his" door, I found nor heard my dad or anyone for that matter. Panic had set in. I felt pissed off. Those feelings were not foreign when dealing with this man. Of course he wasn't at this house. Of Course He Wasn't There. He never was, why would......

...............................................................30 References ..............................................................................................31 Grading Systems at the Secondary Level, p.3 Abstract Educators employ grading systems to assess and to evaluate the knowledge students have gained from a lesson, unit, or course of instruction. The grades that are assigned by teachers are reported to many audiences as communication of students’ achievement. Given the centrality of grades for many important audiences, it is crucial that grading systems are reliable. The purpose of this study was to examine teacher practices and philosophy when assessing student achievement. This research was framed by two questions 1) “How much inconsistency exists in grading systems in a suburban high school?” and 2) “Do inconsistencies in the grading systems of teachers make grades unreliable?” This proposal involved researching the grading practices of approximately 80 teachers in a medium-size suburban high school. The primary source of data collection was through surveys. The data was analyzed for inconsistency among grading systems and reliability of assigned grades. The results of the surveys clearly revealed the inconsistencies that exist in the grading systems of the teachers in this suburban high school. What is equally clear, however, is that college admissions counselors are aware of the inconsistencies in grading systems both within and between schools, and......
