The company's slogan, "Lose Weight Now, Ask Me How," became a marketing theme for distributors, featuring…...

Article Review #4: - Trends in Non-Store Retailing

...and direct selling. Controversy is again casting a shadow over the multilevel marketing industry, as nutritional supplement company Herbalife Inc., which has thousands of distributors in the Chicago region, has been publicly called a pyramid scheme by a prominent investor — an allegation the company vigorously denies. The largest multilevel marketing companies, often known as MLMs, are household names: Avon, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and Amway. MLMs have annual sales of about $30 billion, with about 16 million people in the United States selling their products, according to the industry group Direct Selling Association, which represents these firms and others. The recent controversies might raise the question: What's the difference between a legitimate multilevel marketing company and an illegal pyramid scheme, in which only people who get in first — at the top of the pyramid-like structure — make money and everyone else is a dupe? The harshest critics maintain there is no difference, that there's no such thing as a legitimate MLM and that the industry's secrets stay safe because of a cultlike mentality and a blind eye of regulators. Herbalife is a well-known company that offers multiple products to improve your health and aide with weight loss. This program acts quickly and gives you the extra boost in reaching your goal in weight loss. Herbalife offers many different types of products including vitamins and shakes. ...There are four states of growth in a network marketing company: Foundation: This usually lasts 6 months. This is the period when a company develops its product and marketing plan. Concentration: This period lasts from 2 to 4 years when distributor network is started. Momentum: This period lasts 2 to 4 years also. This is when the company experiences phenomenal growth. Both retail and distributorship explode in terms of expanding growth. It is during this period that a company virtually sweeps across the nation. When a company’s sales reach $50 million annually, they reach what is called "critical mass", (sales go vertical right off the graph). Also, approximately 2/3 of the company’s growth of new distributors occurs during this period. When "Herbalife" reached 50 million in retail sales, they jumped to 151 million in retail sales in only 12 months. They also added over 800,000 to their organization. Let us assume you have an organization which is producing an override bonus check to you of $1,000 per month. When the company reaches "critical mass", distributors automatically experience a ten fold increase in their earnings. In other words, $1,000 per month becomes $10,000 per month. This is the reason for getting involved on the "ground floor" so you will experience the benefits of explosion growth. Stability: This period lasts for the life of the company. A network marketing company that is dedicated to......

...products and market the same product to sell them. Since the company uses the multi level marketing strategy and the ability of the business owners to market the product is one of its biggest value preposition. Talking of Herbalife as one of the competitors of Amway, which uses the same multilevel marketing strategy, they simplify how they talk about their business in order to help investors and the public recognize their value proposition. To achieve this, Herbalife has decided, to include an expanded version of statement of average compensation in all starter kits and in every new distributor application. Herbalife also has taken two initiatives in Russia and India. In Russia, distributors, and only distributors can go into a fixed location and pick up their products from a machine, and then the company replenishes the machine at night. Herbalife said this was a very effective mechanism in a country that has significant traffic and access problems. And in India, Herbalife wants to reflect the model that they have in Mexico. This model is based on partnering with a retailer who already has a fixed location. The retailer makes Herbalife products accessible to the distributors and creates an additional benefit by driving extra traffic to his/her store. Herbalife says both initiatives are at their early stages. How has Internet changed the way Amway does business? In more recent times, the Internet has once forced businesses to rethink how they operate. If......

Then I got this trading opportunity with Barbara. During the trade, I almost fell into false anchoring since I was thinking trading one item for another item. I never thought about trading one item for multiple things. So the trading process was not smooth at first because I couldn’t find one thing which she was willing to trade that satisfied my demand. After a while I realized that if one item is not going to work, two or more items might. As long as the added value is higher than my offer, it would be a gain. Current Event Article

...On April 24th of this year, the Los Angeles Time published an article highlighting the imprisonment of a former KPMG partner for his role in multiple illegal transactions that derived from the disclosure of insider information. The article notes that Scott London pled guilty to insider trading after “repeatedly” tipping off a friend (Shaw) to corporate secrets of major KPMG clients (amongst these: Herbalife Ltd. and Sketchers USA Inc.) in exchange for monetary and gift compensation. As a result of his actions, London was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison and to pay a fine of $100,000. The greater loss for the former partner; however, is noted to be his high-paying position and extraordinary damage to his reputation. In review of this article, one notes that insider trading is a strong example of information asymmetry in the form of adverse selection. As per its definition, adverse selection is “a type of information asymmetry whereby one or more parties to a business transaction… have an information advantage over other parties.” (Scott, 2014). In this case, Shaw gained an unfair advantage over ordinary investors by receiving and exploiting London’s insider information that provided for numerous profitable trades. In Chapter 4, the Efficient Securities Market Theory is introduced which further explores the issue of information asymmetry. In brief summary, the chapter states that, “Efficient securities market theory alerts us to the primary reason for the......
