Within any personal relationship disagreement will arise from time to time. How you and your spouse respond to conflict will make or break the foundation of a marriage. This is the first time that I have read I’m Going!” A Comedy in One Act” by Tristan Bernard. This story captured my interest because it reminded me of my husband and I. When making plans to do something alone I don’t usually include my husband, while reading the play I saw two subtle people but I fail to see the humor and comedy in the argument.
The character Henri and Jeanne are in the middle of and disagreement, after a long argument Jeanne told Henri to go to the race without her and she would be going out by herself. He gets upset with her and tells her he rather she stay at home, and at that moment I thought about my husband and I felt a connection with Jeanne. She only wanted to spend time with her husband, but his mind was made up to go to the races without her. The time that I spend with my husband is enjoyable but there are places that he rather goes alone. I don’t think it is fair to me that he can go out whenever he wants to and leave me at home with the kids. When I go out I have to find a babysitter because he don’t want to watch the kids. I believe what caught my imagination was the fact that I could see husband and I in Henri and Jeanne. I was able to image myself in the position of Jeanne, it got my interested in this play and there were so many different emotions. After reading this play the best example of the term farce is because our text defined the play as comedy: short play in which

Both subtle humor and hilarity are developed through improbable situation, exaggeration and (often) ridiculous antic (Clugston, 2010)

What makes the setting so memorable it gave detail of the setting of the room in the beginning of the play and allowed the reader to know where the play was located? It also spoke of the cloudy and rainy day and how Henri still wanted to go to the races even with the weather been rainy, and it spoke of their emotion toward each other. The reason the plot intriguing was because it was able to keep my attention, because not knowing if what Henri would leave or stay at the apartment with Jeanne. I was surprise when he wanted her to stay home even though he was still going to the race. The character Henri and Jeanne were in a disagreement because Jeanne wanted to go with her husband to the race. Jeanne felt the way a lot of other women feel today just wanting to spend time with their spouse. Henri acted like a lot of men but not all men, not understanding the need of women and don’t listen. The point of this play is to show the emotional, character and the disagreement that couple has. Henri had many ways of telling his wife that she was not welcome to go with him. Jeanne had decided to harass her husband because she could not go to the race. This play taught me to try to understand each other and not take each other for granted.

Famous for representing the human form as his source of inspiration, more particularly the beauty of the female form, he was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France and died at the age of 84 in 1954 in Nizza, France (henri-matisse.net, 2011). He was one of the first artists who exemplified the Fauvist art movement. The work he produced in almost six and a half decades is now presented in the art exhibition ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ in the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane. A good example of his ability to present human expression can be found in his artwork ‘Le Bonheur de vivre’ (‘The Joy of Life’).
