Guiding Strategies Observation

I noticed throughout the day, one of my co-teachers uses many guidance strategy tools in order to keep the day flowing smoothly. One day, we were all going to be getting ready to go outside and play, since it was sunny and warm. My co-teacher, who works with the preschoolers, begins to get her children ready to go outside first, since most of them are able to get dressed by themselves. One of the children begins to grab everyone’s boots and coats and throw them into the center of the rug. My co-teacher sees this, gets down at the child’s level, looks him in the eyes, and says, “Why don’t you grab your boots and coat instead? Your friends are able to find theirs when they have finished using the bathroom.” This child then said, “But I can’t find them!” So my co-teacher then said, “Well, have you checked in your bag? I think I see a sleeve sticking out.” The boy looked up at her, smiled, and went and found his boots and coat and proceeded to put them on. My co-teacher then proceeded to tell the children to sit down on the rug and wait for their names to be called to line up at the door to go outside. When one of the children tried to go before their name was called, my co-teacher explained to him, “I’m sorry, but I did not call your name yet. You need to wait until you hear your name before you may line up.”
One thing I really notice, if the use of clear positive directions, especially when it comes to transitions – this one in particular, where you have many children trying to get themselves ready to go outside and work off some energy, and some children can become anxious while waiting for their peers to finish getting themselves ready. During my attendance at Knox College thus far and seeing the guidance programme at work, my honest opinion regarding the guidance programme is that, it has help me a lot during my time at Knox College. It has done so by giving meaningful and aspirating advice to young students such as myself, that will be going out into todays’ society. I also love the way the guidance counselors are straight forward with their students, by not hiding or censoring anything from the students and putting what they have to say straight out on the table, then explaining it in full details to the students, so that they can understand what todays’ world is really like. One other aspect about the guidance programme that I’m really glad and grateful for, is how they are able to use real life situations as examples to show us young adults, yes “young adults”, that we should be careful of the choices and decisions we make because we are no longer children that need to be breast feed by our mothers, but as young adults who will bring change to our generation and future generations to come. ...Guidance In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them to get through the unsteady difficulties life brings to all human beings. The problem is that none of these children are being raised right nor given good advice that will help them succeed in life. Countless people believe that if a child grows up in an unstructured household, then he or she will not be instilled with the right morals, ethics, and values, which is untrue. But, today, the youth in our society is being inspired by the ignorance we see on social media and it is not heading in the direction of righteousness. In the essay “Advice to Youth” by Mark Twain, he offers some seemly good advice to the young people. The advice he offers is that “all young people are given rules or advice to guide them as they grow up and to keep them on the right path to live a good life”. Mark Twain states “Always obey your parents, when they are present”. Yes, you should obey your parents, but if they are not present, you cannot solely rely on their standing orders to make the best decision.
