I. Discuss the benefits of integrating Human Resource Management (HRM) and payroll databases.

There are numerous benefits of integrating HRM and payroll databases. One benefit is the improvement in the providing of data access. Another benefit is the facilitation of the updating of employee data as there will only be one update necessary as opposed to the updating of two separate systems. A third benefit is the improvement in decision-making as it will allow access to more relevant information that is required for employee development.

II. Discuss the current problems related to labor at Fargo Publishing.
Currently, the HRM department directly participates in the payroll processing and paycheck distribution which displays a lack of segregation of duties. This increases risk of fraud and inability to detect and correct fraud. The employees are also completing their time cards by using a box that prints the date and time. This may leave room for inaccuracies which may result in increased labor expenses and erroneous labor reports. The time card data, which is used for calculating payroll, should be reconciled to the job-time ticket data used for costing and managerial purposes, by an individual not involved in generating that data.

III. Discuss three recommendations to improve the problem related to labor at Fargo Publishing.
My first recommendation would be segregate the payroll duties. This segregation of duties would prevent someone with access to paychecks from creating fictitious employees or altering pay rates then intercepting those fraudulent checks. Additionally, any changes to the payroll master file should be reviewed and approved by someone other than the person recommending the change. A second recommendation would be to use an automated time keeping system such as badge readers and/or bar code scanners. This will reduce the…...

...For my final paper I chose Fargo due to the fact that film noir was my favorite genre of films that I was introduced to in this class and it has amazing reviews, but I had never seen it. First off I love how the film opens "the following story is based on real events" disclaimer, it sets the viewer up to think they are about to see a powerful drama, then it catches them off-guard with a black sort of morbid comedy. Even from there, the opening shot shows the car driving down a dark empty road accompanied by some very appropriate music to makes us believe that it’s going to be a high action or suspenseful film, but the real colors of the movie quickly start to show through. This film changes an ordinary, Midwestern town upside down with a triple homicide and makes for a movie that can have the audience questioning their faith in humanity. I think that this film fits into the ordinary film noir genre, but turns it into a comedy/high drama, of Jerry’s despicable greed and his search of his idea of the “American Dream”. Slightly off subject, as far as “typical” noir films go I was surprised at the high saturation of light they used in this film even during very dark times/situations. I feel like this film removes the cliche of a typical police investigator.
