Grading Criteria D2 - Evaluate the findings from the research undertaken.
The research that we carried out worked well and we managed to get some solid results because we used four different research methods. They were primary research which was in the form of a questionnaire, secondary research which was in the form of a focus group, secondary research which was a competitor analysis and also secondary research to determine the size of the target market on a local, regional and national level. These four different methods of research allowed us to cover all of the objectives for the research which were:
• The strengths and weaknesses according to the 16-23 year old target audience
• The availability of the product to this group of people
• The levels of awareness of the advertising campaign
• Who and what the current competitors are to the product
We created our questionnaire on Microsoft Word and so it was easy to create. The questions that we put into the questionnaire were based around the four objectives so that we could attain the best and broadest range of information about the opinions of the product to the target market. The reason for using a questionnaire was that it gained relative quantitative and qualitative data from just one method of research, which we all felt was essential in order to make sure that all the data we collected was as useful and relevant as possible. After we had done the survey we found a website called survey money which could have collected another amount of responses from a different place. Which looking back would have made the research much more valid and reliable. We could have even put the survey on Buxton College’s website or UDo which would have gained many more responses, again increasing the ecological validity of the results. However this would have been more time consuming than the questionnaire already was.

The study aimed at investigating existing problems faced by ASHA members and ANMs', their work environment, their role in safe and healthy motherhood, relationship with pregnant women (PW) and family members, technology literacy and opportunities for Information Communication Technology (ICT) interventions to empower maternal health scenario. Two sub-centers (SC), one anganwadi center, one primary health center (PHC) and one community health center (CHC) were visited and observed. 6 one-to-one on-field interviews were conducted with ASHA members and ANMs. This paper presents research insights, findings and analysis of conducted on-field user research. ...Outline and critically evaluate research into out-of-body experiences (10 marks) An out-of-body experience, first defined by George Tyrell, is when a person appears to see his or her own body from above or outside themselves. This phenomenon has proven popular with psychologists who are trying to verify or falsify them however research is inconclusive. Miss Z was an American student who claimed to have out-of-body experiences during her sleep. Charles Tart arranged for Miss Z to spend four nights in a sleeping laboratory, during which time he would test to see whether her out-of-body experiences really occurred. In order to test it, Tart hid a random five-digit number in the sleeping lab each night and asked Miss Z to find and remember the number during her out-of-body experience. She managed to get the number correct every night – the probability of this being due to luck is 1/100,000 therefore Tart concluded that she must have had out-of-body experiences each night in order to get the number correct. Sceptics have since questioned the reliability and validity of the findings of Tart’s research. Miss Z moved away straight after the experiment, meaning it could not be replicated. The results therefore cannot be verified and compared to other results therefore they lack reliability. Tart (1969) did attempt a similar study using Robert Monroe who also claimed to have out-of-body experiences but the experiment was unsuccessful and the findings were never published. ...

...Outline and evaluate research into Privation Privation is the failure to form an attachment, this may be due to extremely poor parenting or prolonged stays away from a potential attachment figure, e.g. whilst in hospital. One famous study on extreme privation is the case study of Genie: Genie was locked in a room by her father until she was thirteen and a half years old and never fully recovered and proceeded to lack social responsiveness. Her lack of recovery may be due to the fact that she was found beyond the sensitive period or because of the physical deprivation she experienced. Additionally, another well-known case study on privation is the Czech twins whom spent the first seven years of their life locked up by their stepmother and were unable to talk. Once they were found they were then cared for by two sisters and by the age of fourteen they were socially and intellectually stable and had no problems with relationships and intelligence. The two studies both demonstrate privation; however, they both differ in terms of recovery from the privation. The negative effects of privation were more easily reversed with the Czech twins than Genie; this could have been due to the fact they went to a stable loving home which gave them sufficient emotional care. They were also younger when discovered; this may also contribute to the ease of recovery. The Czech twins were together; this means they could recover better socially as they were not alone, unlike Genie who was secluded......

There are three main experiments that deal with the hypothesis of cross cultural variations in attachment by using the basis of the Strange Situation test. Van Ijzendoorn & Kroonenberg (1988) these two men created a meta-analysis which is where they collect already completed experiments and compare them too each other on a specific topic. This allows researchers to get a better look at overall trends and identify possible relationships that might exist, by doing this they may be able to identify trends that could not be seen in smaller-scale studies. They used 32 studies from 8 different countries that all used the strange situation procedure to study attachment. Using a meta analysis (statistical technique) they calculated the average percentage for the different attachment styles (e.g. secure, avoidant and ambivalent) in each country. The found that secure attachment was the most common type of attachment in all cultures. The lowest percentage of secure attachments was shown in china and the highest in Great Britain. Takahasi (1990) their aim is to prove if the Strange Situation is a valid procedure for cultures other than American middle class, white children and their mothers. ...Milgram devised his psychological research three months after the start of Adolf Eichmann`s trail to investigate if it was possible for people to go against their values because someone in higher authority told them to do so. The aim of the experiment was to investigate what level of obedience would be shown when participants were told by an authority figure to administer electric shocks to another person. Milgram used 40 male participants who were recruited through a newspaper and direct mail advertisement. Each participant was told the aim of the experiment was to see how punishment affected memory. There were two roles in the study, the teacher and the student. The naive participant and a confederate due a slip of paper from a hat which allocated them to their role, but it were rigged so that the naive participant was always the teacher whilst the confederate was the student. The learner and the teacher where taken to the experimental room as the method for this study was a lab experiment. The learner was strapped to an electric chair where the electric shocks can be administered. The experimenter then advised them that the shocks can be extremely painful, but o permanent tissue damage. The next stage involved the teacher testing the learner by giving him one of the words in a pair along with four other words and the learner had to indicate the original word had been paired. The Strange Situation was devised by Mary Ainsworth and her colleagues in order to test the nature of attachment by placing an infant in conditions of mild distress which was caused by the presence of a stranger and separation from the caregiver. This also allowed the observers to measure stranger anxiety and separation anxiety. The procedure consisted of eight episodes with each episode designated to behaviour for example episode 3 the entrance of the stranger measured the stranger anxiety. With respects to the Strange Situation, Ainsworth found out that there were three types of attachment. One of these being secure attachment, these infants were in a happy relationship with their caregiver, however were distressed by the presence of the stranger and separation from the caregiver. They happily greeted their caregiver on reunion. The second type of attachment was insecure- avoidant, these infants avoided social interaction and intimacy. They were unaffected by the presence of the stranger and separation from the caregiver. Lastly, the third type of attachment was insecure- resistant, in which the infant had high levels of stranger anxiety and separation anxiety and they rejected the caregiver on reunion. ...Outline and evaluate research into conformity: (12 marks) Asch carried out a key study in the field of conformity in 1951, looking at whether people will conform to the group and give an incorrect answer to a simple question. Asch used 50 male college students overall, and in each group there were 7 students - one oblivious participant, and 6 confederates of the experimenter. Asch showed each group a series of cards in pairs - one card had a vertical line on it, and the second card had 3 lines of differing lengths on it, one of which matched the line on the first card. One by one, the students were asked aloud which line matched the one on the first card - A, B or C. The six confederates of the experimenter gave the same wrong answer, and Asch observed whether the oblivious participant conformed to the group and gave the incorrect answer. Asch found that around 75% of participants conformed to the incorrect answer at least once, showing that even in situations where the correct answer is obvious, there is still huge pressure to conform, especially when the group is unanimous. A weakness of this study is that the sample was small, unrepresentative and biased - Asch used only male students, all the same age and all from the same college, meaning that the results can’t be generalized to females or older or younger people. ...Discuss how findings from social influence research could be used to change social policies Social change is when society adopts a new belief or way of behaving which then becomes widely accepted as the norm, and can be positive or negative. Social influence research tells us how whole societies might change, and is the process of bringing about significant societal changes, which usually results in a conflict with those in authority or power- It could be used to educate others also. Research into obedience had exposed an intellectual illusion that often hinders critical discussion about why people behave inhumanely- the belief that only evil people do evil acts. Research by Milgram and Zimbardo showed that ordinary, decent people who are placed in positions of power, or put under pressure to obey an authority figure, may commit evil acts. Recent events in Iraq (the Abu Ghraib prison incident) has reinforced the fact that we need to be aware of the circumstances which lead to this, to reduce the likelihood of such behaviour. ...A research done in conformity was conducted by Sherif. He did a lab experiment where he asked participants to watch a non-moving light in a dark room. The light appeared to move when in fact it was a visual illusion. Participants were asked to estimate the movement of the light alone and then in groups of three. He found that when participants were asked to estimate the movement of the light alone there was a variation in answers. However, when they were in groups of three participants changed their answers to give an average of their individual estimates. A criticism of Sherif’s study is that its low in ecological validity, for example the task that participants were asked to do is not a task you would do in everyday life. Therefore we may not be able to generalise these results to real life situations in which people conform to a majority. Another criticism of Sherif’s study is that it raises ethical issues, for example participants were deceived as they were not told the truth about the light not moving. Therefore this can lead to the participants feeling stressed as they try to find out the answer. This would raise another ethical issue as Sherif has not protected his participants from harm therefore this shows that Sherif is valuing his experiment more than his participants. Many studies have been conducted into looking at obedience in people and what factors in a certain situation lead people to obey. In 1963, Milgram carried out a study among 40 American males between the ages of 20 and 50 years old, with the study aim being wanting to find out under what conditions would different people obey to authority under. The participants were deceived into thinking they would be emitting electric shocks, to inflict pain onto an individual when they gave a wrong answer to a question; the question being a word matching query. The participant here played the role of a teacher and the learner in this case was in fact the confederate. The shock meter went up in pain voltages as the experiment went on and more wrong answers were issued. However, there was no real pain being inflicted, just the sound of the learner acting as if he was hurt. The experiment carried on until the participant refused to obey the orders being given to them, or until the highest shock voltage of 450 volts was reached. However, stern encouragement was given to the participant by the leader of the experiment to carry on going and issue out the shocks, even though it was putting the learner through a great deal of audible pain. Evaluate the Usefulness of Research Into Persuading a Jury

...Usefulness of a research refers to how well a study has been carried out and can therefore expand scientific knowledge as well as apply to the wider population. In this case, research into persuading a jury is able to provide us with explanations as to how or why jurors sometimes react in a certain way when presented with different scenarios in the trials. A strength of this type of research is that it presents useful evidence which aids the government with ideas as to how to manipulate the trials so that both sides get a fair trial. For example in the study of Loftus into expert testimony it was found that if it was used in a trial, it was likely to arise more doubts about the defendant’s guilt for the jurors, so Loftus stated that if both sides use an expert it may lead to a battle of experts and as a result jurors may be confounded even more. It can therefore be seen how expert testimony should not be used often and by both sides, something which potentially trials can put into practice. Another strength of this type of research is that it’s generally quite cheap to carry out, as it usually uses self-reports to obtain results, so many can be carried out and thus vast amounts of data can be collected. This means we can apply these results to the area that we are investigating, in this case persuading a jury.
