Arab League Ethical Perspectives

...Arab League Ethical Perspectives ETH/316 - Ethics and Social Responsibility Introduction The Arab League was “founded in March 1945 and originally consisted of six countries cut has grown to 22 countries in parts of Africa and the Middle East. Residents of these countries are dominantly Muslim, with Lebanon having 40% Christian” (New York Times, 2012). The key concern to form the league was to promote independence and sovereignty to Arab countries. The other reasons were to strengthen the relationships between member states through political, cultural, and economic cooperation. Background The Arab League is constantly in the news for one reason or another. In recent years, the news have been the political unrest in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Bahrain, and Syria that are members of the league. Before the upheaval, most of the news from the Arab League have been its ongoing conflicts with Israel. The history of the conflicts has been going on for many decades. In fact, Israel has gone to war with Syria, Egypt, and Jordan and defeated them simultaneously. Peace treaties were signed years ago between the countries, but the conflict is still ongoing with the Palestinians and Israelis. The Palestinians want to form their own state alongside the Jewish state. The Israelis refuse to allow this to happen, which led to much Palestinian violence toward Israel that caused several thousand deaths from both sides. The Arab League proposed peace plans but were never......

League of Nations

...The League of Nations was created in the harsh circumstances of the post-war period. As it was Wilson who gave to life the idea of the League it was discussed greatly at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. The US president came up with the idea of the organization and so it was him that produced its regulations, also known as the Covenant. This Covenant decided which situations were of concern and how decisions on these were to be reached. At the same time it also decided how the organization as to act in order to achieve and to secure the aims set out. The league was incorporated into all of the peace treaties of the Paris Settlement and aimed at promoting international co-operating and to achieve international peace and security. It also aimed at promoting what became known as “collective security’ which is the guarantee that the states incorporated in the league would protect each other in case of aggression. The league faced many obstacles in achieving peace as some countries were not satisfied with the terms of the peace treaties and wanted to change them. On the other hand, the ones who had made gains in the war period wanted to maintain these and so acted in a manner that would not bring disruption. Having said this, nobody could be certain if all of the members of the league were ready to maintain the order that was achieved after the war. The three main channels of the policy of the League were moral persuasion, economic sanctions and the use of military......

League of Nations

...“Examine the reasons why the League of Nations failed to preserve peace.” Weaknesses of the League of Nations The League of Nations came into existence on 10 January 1920 as a result of the First World War (WW1), it was one of Woodrow Wilson's 14 points to create a body that would settle international disputes in ways other than fighting / military action. He wanted to prevent another war like WW1. The main aims of the League of Nations were to maintain peace through collective security and to encourage international co-operation. The league had a number of successes, but a greater number of failures, thus it was not a complete failure in its attempt to preserve peace. The failures of the League of Nations were caused by their great amount of weaknesses. There was a lack of world powers, they lacked military power. They used economic or trade sanctions instead of force, that which they did not have. Their decision making ways were slow which led to a delay in their responses in problems. The leading members in the League of Nations had a greater self-interest for their own countries and their economic growth. In many circumstances the League of Nations was seen as weak and useless. As commonly known, one of its’ greatest weaknesses was the absence of the United States (U.S) despite the fact that it was Wilson, the president of the U.S who initiated the idea; when the American people voted for a policy of isolation, Wilson opted not to join the League of Nations.......

The Red Headed League

...Dr Watson’s Notebook Case No. 2136 ‘The Red Headed League’ Date: October 1890 The Red headed League As I came across Sherlock, I had accidently bumped into him while he was just beginning on a case. There, on an armchair, was an elderly gentleman, with vivid flaming hair. He and Sherlock were in a conversation, but I had accidentally bumped into them and interrupted them. Sherlock was showing his talents to Mr Wilson, observing how he can tell that Mr Wilson used to work in hard labour, finding out that he did indeed, working as a youngster. So, after I had helped take notes of Jabez Wilson, we finally looked at what Mr Wilson had to tell. He handed over a news article, which was a jobs advertisement. It was called the red headed league, advertising a vacancy for the job. It was a very good pay, £4 a week. But, there were requirements before you could apply. You had to be red-headed Mr Jabez Wilson. Jabez Wilson is a very large, elderly man. He had fiery red hair and rather red in the face too. He had small, fat encircled eyes. He wore baggy grey shepherds’ check trousers. A faded black frock coat which was unbuttoned in the front and also wore a drab waistcoat with a heavy brassy Albert chain and a square pierced bit of metal dangling down as an ornament. He also wore a frayed top hat and fading brown overcoat with a wrinkled velvet collar lay upon a chair beside him. To me, he looked like a very average British tradesman and rather slow obese man.......

The National Football League

... The National Football League Today Robert Davidson Strayer Univ. BUS. 475 Prof. Kelly Aug 1, 2014 The National Football League (NFL) Today The National Football League today is a Multi –Billion dollar industry, which includes some of the most influential and powerful stakeholders in the United States today. There are many key factors in this organization’s external environment that can affect its success. Presupposing, the two key factors to this are the Franchise Tag which is a tool that the owners use to pay less money to players at the end of their current contract and keep them on that team for the remainder of the season. In terms of a business decision, the franchise tag is a solid move. It prevents a player from leaving a certain team without the team receiving just compensation, but it also pays the player a top five salary at that particular position. It gives the team five extra months to negotiate a new contract in order to retain the player on the current team with a long term contract it is intended as a good faith jester from the team to show the player under this tag that this is what the organization is working towards. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, and teams basically use the tag now to keep a player hostage. While the players are beginning to hold out, meaning not playing until well into the season in hopes of obtaining a new contract or being released to the free agent market. The......

League of Legends

...League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows[1] and Mac OS X. It is a free-to-play game supported by micro-transactions and inspired by the mod Defense of the Ancients[2] for the video game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. In League of Legends, players assume the role of a "champion" with unique abilities and battle against a team of other players or computer-controlled champions. In the most popular game modes, the goal is to destroy the opposing team's "nexus", a building which lies at the heart of a base protected by defensive structures. Each League of Legends game is discrete, with all champions starting off each game fairly weak and progressing by accumulating gold and experience over the course of the game.[3] League of Legends was generally well received at release, and it has grown in popularity in the years since. By July 2012, League of Legends was the most played PC game in North America and Europe in terms of the number of hours played.[4] As of January 2014, over 67 million people play League of Legends per month, 27 million per day, and over 7.5 million concurrently during peak hours.[5] League of Legends has a large, active competitive scene. In North America and Europe, Riot Games organizes the League of Legends Championship Series, which consists of 10[6] professional teams in each continent. Similar regional competitions exist in China, South Korea, Taiwan, and......

League of Legends

...Introduction What is League of Legends? League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). A MOBA is a genre of games that are strictly PvP or player vs. player which has strategic and teamwork based elements. MOBAs usually take place in an enclosed map or arena where teams battle for supremacy over objectives using an array of characters. Now enough about what is a MOBA. Let's talk about League of Legends. Body First I will explain the core concepts of a standard game of League of Legends. First you queue into matchmaking and once a game is found a lobby is put together in which the players are split into two teams of five and put into Champion Select where, as described, players start to select "Champions". "Champions" are characters that you play in the game that have 4 active abilities and a passive ability as well as different play styles. There are 6 main play styles or roles which include Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support. There are also 4 positions that a Champion can fall into such as top lane, middle lane, bottom lane which consists of two champions, and jungle. After each player has selected a Champion the players are then transported to a magical arena called Summoner's Rift. Summoner's Rift consists of three lanes and a jungle as I previously stated. Top lane is usually played by Fighter or Tanks, Mid Lane has Assassins or Mages, Bot lane is a duo lane that has a pair played by a Marksman and a Support, and Jungle can be played...

...interesting cultural icon of his day. Although Hemingway is sometimes disparaged for his unpleasant portrayal of women and for his glorification of machismo, we nonetheless find some sympathetic, even heroic, female figures in his novels and short stories. Beginning a Sentence with And or But A frequently asked question about conjunctions is whether and or but can be used at the beginning of a sentence. This is what R.W. Burchfield has to say about this use of and: There is a persistent belief that it is improper to begin a sentence with And, but this prohibition has been cheerfully ignored by standard authors from AngloSaxon times onwards. An initial And is a useful aid to writers as the narrative continues. from The New Fowler's Modern English Usage edited by R.W. Burchfield. Clarendon Press: Oxford, England. 1996. Used with the permission of Oxford University Press. The same is true with the conjunction but. A sentence beginning with and or but will tend to draw attention to itself and its transitional function. Writers should examine such sentences with two questions in mind: (1) would the sentence and paragraph function just as well without the initial conjunction? (2) should the sentence in question be connected to the previous sentence? If the initial conjunction still seems appropriate, use it. Among the coordinating conjunctions, the most common, of course, are and, but, and or. It might be helpful to explore the uses of these three little words. The examples below......

League of Nations

...Background[edit] The 1864 Geneva Convention, one of the earliest formulations of international law. The concept of a peaceful community of nations had been proposed as far back as 1795, when Immanuel Kant's Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch[5] outlined the idea of a league of nations to control conflict and promote peace between states.[6] Kant argued for the establishment of a peaceful world community, not in a sense of a global government, but in the hope that each state would declare itself a free state that respects its citizens and welcomes foreign visitors as fellow rational beings, thus promoting peaceful society worldwide.[7] International co-operation to promote collective security originated in the Concert of Europe that developed after the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century in an attempt to maintain the status quo between European states and so avoid war.[8][9] This period also saw the development of international law, with the first Geneva Conventions establishing laws dealing with humanitarian relief during wartime, and the international Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 governing rules of war and the peaceful settlement of international disputes.[10][11] The forerunner of the League of Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, was formed by the peace activists William Randal Cremer and Frédéric Passy in 1889. The organisation was international in scope, with a third of the members of parliaments (in the 24 countries that had parliaments) serving as......
