...Project Management Best Practices In the project management world, the development and utilization of best practices is the key to success for projects of all shapes and sizes that yield the highest quality result. Finding the perfect balance between the organization, observing, and governing of projects help organizations reach the goals and objectives set by shareholders and executives. Best practices can be determined by finding simply what works best. Organizations can determine this a couple of ways. One way is to benchmark, or compare practices used by other organizations that are similar to yours. (Veatch, 2011) If a company in your industry is striving, using philosophies or techniques that are commonplace to them should become familiar to your organization. Another way is to use techniques such as postmortem meetings after the closure of projects to determine what worked and what did not. Listening to your resources and determining what was helpful in reaching the goals outlined in the project, or finding out what was an interference can outline practices that will spell success for future projects. Having postmortem meetings itself can be a best practice. It’s always a smart business decision to continue to find ways to improve. David Herron and David Garmus from the Davis Consulting Group, outlined that analysis of quantitative data collected, such as size, effort, duration, and defects along with qualitative data, such as process, methods,......

...that I conducted on web design best practices, I quickly came to the conclusion that the phrase “best practices” seems to be a set of opinions based upon the articles’ authors. It’s also quite clear that web design best practices are geared towards the goals and target audience of the website or web application. For instance, a business web application used to process some sort of data and then display that data in a more meaningful way will have a different set of best practices than a website that allows visitors to create a profile, connect with friends and share certain types of media formats, such as uploading photos and videos. That’s why it’s very important to answer all of the “who”, “what”, “where”, and “how” questions that are asked before laying down a lick of code. Once a web designer and/or project manager has all of the requirements gathered for the website, then we get into thinking about what best practices to use when designing the website. Also, determining what web design best practices to follow can be based upon what a web designer/developer uses to develop that website. For example, a cold fusion web developer would use a certain set of best practices that are based upon cold fusion versus the best practices of developing a web site using ASP.NET. The above basically describes the first steps within the SDLC process. SDLC stands for Software Development Life Cycle, and in my opinion, should be the first best practice to follow. The SDLC is......

...methodology by which to manage the project. Often the term “best practices” is referenced within a defined methodology. Documenting Best Practices: Mature Project Management Processes Best practice refers to the optimal method recognized within a given industry or discipline to achieve a stated goal or objective. These practices are consistently predictable and proven to provide successful results and these practices are dynamic—evolving and maturing over time (Devine, 2013). The Business Dictionary defines a best practice as a, “method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that is used as a benchmark (Business Dictionary, n.d.).” A more simple definition is that a best practice is a method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that is used as a benchmark. In addition, a "best" practice can evolve to become better as improvements are discovered. Best practice is considered by some as a business buzzword, used to describe the process of developing and following a standard way of doing things that multiple organizations can use. Organizations that have had constant success have adapted a unique version of the best practice method that accommodates what they do. There are a number of reasons that spur an organization to institutionalize a best practices capturing mechanism. Many organizations use best practices to do the following (Thomas, 2009): • Demonstrated......

...ADAPTATION OF BEST PRACTICES THE EXPERIENCE OF THE INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN CANADA (Written Report, 2015) AS PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR ADMINISTRATIVE INNOVATIONS AND REFORMS (MPA 620) SUBMITTED BY UMAR SHADRACK. J SUBMITTED TO: PROF .SHERWIN WILLIAM A. CUASAY (MPM) UNIVERSITY OF BATANGAS GRADUATE SCHOOL INTRODUCTION A best practice may be a particular method, or it may be a whole program or intervention. “Best practice” status is sometimes conferred either officially – by a government body, professional association, or other authoritative entity – or by published research results. Best practices, in short, are those methods or programs that have been found to be successful in accomplishing their goals and that can be used, or adapted for use, in your circumstances. The standards for choosing a best practice vary tremendously, depending upon who’s doing the choosing. In some cases, almost any program that can show some success is labeled a best practice. In others, the criteria are so strict that only a few are selected (more likely with professional associations that are trying to set or uphold research standards.) Where the standards are relatively loose, programs designated as best practices may be only adequate, rather than truly the best the field has to offer. Where the standards are too strict, many......

The Use of "Best Practice" in Guardianship

...Final Project The use of “Best Practice” in Guardianship Student: Takysha Crawford tcrawford@waldenu.edu Student ID # A00487277 Program: PhD in Human Services Specialization: Family Studies and Intervention Strategies Walden University May 18, 2014 Introduction My specific area of human services would is guardianship of incapacitated adults who need guardians to help them provide food, clothing or shelter, or to care for his or her own physical health, and to manage his or her own financial affairs. When we think of guardianship, we often think about children who have no one and need people to serve as guardians but we really don’t think about the adults who, due to physical or mental incapacity, need someone to serve as their guardian. These people need someone to help make financial, medical, and personal decisions on their behalf. The Uniform Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Act, considers an incapacitated adult as one who is unable receive and evaluate information or make or communicate decisions to such an extent that the individual lacks the ability to meet essential requirements for physical health, safety, or self-care, even with appropriate technological assistance (Demakis, 2013). To date all 50 states have passed some type of guardianship reform: however these reforms vary considerably from state to state (Kubik & Woods, 2005). According to Demakis (2013), First, a petition is made to the court, most often by a family member, in......

...The best practice approach speculates that there is an exact set of human resource practices that can be applied in almost any organizational context that helps to increase the performance that helps to deliver outcomes that are valuable for all the stakeholders, particularly employees. However, the effect of the performance is said to be stronger and more influential if all of the said practices are packed together in order to balance and harmonize each other, thus create positive synergies between them. As a result, the said approach covers different related prescriptive models of human resource management such as high-commitment, high-involvement, high-performance work system, and mutual gains models (Shields 2007, p. 90). The best practice approach is based on the idea that there is a set of best HRM practices and that applying them will help to superior organizational performance. The best known set is Pfeffer’s (1994) model that shows that seven important HR practices of a successful organizations which are: employment security, selective hiring, self-managed teams, high compensation contingent on performance, training, reduction of status differentials and sharing information (Armstrong 2006, p. 65) (see Appendix A). ...interests to believe Wal-Mart was out to hurt “Main Street”. My recommendation would be to go back in time to the point where they began this practice and instead to think of ways Wal-Mart might work in cooperation with some of the small, niche stores on Main Street. What opportunities did such merchants offer to Wal-Mart? They should have built relationships with niche competitors and created opportunities to work together to promote community events in downtown settings, for example. One example might be to support downtown parades or picnics by partnering with all businesses in the downtown area. While this could cost some money in the short-run, Wal-Mart has some margin to sponsor such events and it would have changed how Wal-Mart was viewed in such small towns. Using this “relationship perspective” from the Principle of Caring, Wal-Mart could still be a huge success without alienating so many of the special interest groups that later caused them so much distress when they tried to open more stores in other towns. The downside to my recommendation is that some parties might think wiping out competitors is the best way to be successful. In the short-term this may be true but the long-term effects have been that people believe Wal-Mart will do anything to monopolize the market and that small towns have suffered terribly from this practice. 2. Stakeholders involved in this recommendation: COMMUNITIES WHERE WAL-MART OPERATES. If Wal-Mart were to take a more......
