In the article “A Strategy for Developing Chronological-Age-Appropriate and Functional Curricular Content For Severely Handicapped Adolescents And Young Adult”, the authors, Brown, Branston, Hamre-Nietupski, Pumpian, Certo, & Gruenewald, address the unsuitability of the typical bottom-up curriculum offered to severely handicapped adolescents and young adult. The authors’ propose an alternative approach to that curriculum that is to teach chronological age-appropriate functional skills in natural environments. Then it describes an empirical strategy that is a curriculum development strategy. Curriculum development strategy is a six phase strategy, and it is constructed based on the alternative approach.
I like the fact that the author use short narratives at the beginning.These stories give the reader a clear picture of what parents go through and how this valueless, time consuming, and old strategies that have been used for years without any positive outcomes. Although, if there is any effect it is subtle compared to the time, money, and efforts. From my experience in Jordan, I have seen many young adults learning how to sing and dance and how they roll their eyes like they are saying this is not for us. I support the fact that they have to teach a strategy with their chronological age prepared and in a natural environment. It is sad to teach a 22 years old to imitate foot stamping or to pass a bag of beans to the next person even if he was mentally upright at the age of 4 years old.
These activities are nonfunctional and artificial. Using a bottom-up sequence which means teaching skills occur first in normal development then proceed to skills that are more progressive at an older age is just waste of time. Also, it increases the differences…...

Of these 8 million children, at least 3.3 million children younger than 5 years of age die annually because of their handicap condition (CITE). Those children who do end up surviving will most likely be mentally and/or physically disabled for the rest of their life. With at least two handicapped newborns being born everyday, the healthcare industry is constantly faced with decisions regarding what the correct ethical treatment options should be for handicapped newborns. Whether or not treatment regimens should even be administered to handicapped newborns has caused a great deal of controversy in our society, and has ultimately come down to two different options: Should there be a law that makes it illegal to withhold treatment from handicapped newborns? Or should the decision of treatment be up to the parents and/or physicians? Since the number of handicapped newborns being born into the United States is only going to increase, this is definitely an ethical topic that needs to be addressed by both the public and lawmakers. ...Guinness on Handicapped Equality Last month, Guinness came out with a unique beer commercial. Rather than a commercial portraying beautiful, young woman, it flips the switch by presenting a group of athletic, beer-drinking men who are defined as much by their kindness as their physical strength. Guinness managed to put a positive spin on disability, portraying people with disabilities as having just as much fun with good friends as people without disabilities. As the men partake in an intense game of wheelchair basketball, there is soothing and emotional music playing in the background, which sounds very inspiring to viewers. The ad starts off with a ball being shot at the hoop, we do not see who shot it. I automatically assumed that it was likely someone without a disability shooting because most athletes are not disabled. After I saw who was playing, I right away immediately assumed they were all disabled because they were all putting in an equal amount of effort and all in wheelchairs. The ad does not point out who the actual disabled player is until most of the men stand up after the game, except for one who remains in his wheelchair. This revealed that they were using the chairs to include a friend who has a physical disability. There is no audience; they are not looking for accolades. The articles used assess different forms of cognitive function and executive function. It is hypothesized that individuals with autism will show impairments in executive function, prospective memory, inhibitory function, cognition, sensory-motor, and language when compared to TD individuals. Multiple measures were used to assess participant’s abilities with working memory, executive function, development, memory, awareness, and cognitive function; some of these measures were self-reported. One study by Rosenthal et al. (2013) found that older children with autism spectrum disorder show executive function impairments with age, meaning that different impairments are noticeable at different ages. In contrast, Iwanaga et al. (2000) found differences in cognitive function between Asperger’s syndrome and high functioning autism. The results of some studies found specific impairments are related to age.
