Although some may view data collection as tedious, it is an essential component in Human Services as it is the overall purpose of doing an intake and ensures the quality of information. Proper data collection also establishes accountability within the agency, and ensures a successful hand-off from the intake to the assessment process. This paper will detail the importance of appropriate data collections for the intake and assessment forms. The basic premise of the intake process is data collection, and yet the act of collecting data can become tedious. If this is perhaps the thousandth time a human services worker might’ve completed the same form without variation, they may not fully comprehend that what goes in during the intake process, affects what comes out of the helping process. In some cases, intake dictates outcome. In most agencies, the intake and assessment is conducted by two separate Human Services workers; they could sit next two each other or have never interacted whatsoever. Either way, appropriate data collection and notation, becomes as essential during case hand-off as a baton passed between relay racers. Even the simplest aspects of a client’s issue, can be essential during assessment (Summers, 2011). Pertinent elements including small details, if included on the referral, can be equally as useful as the client’s chief complaint. Just as collection and notation of data is vital to the intake process, missing data can be equally as important. Nothing will compensate for data that is not collected and/or noted, and data that is of poor quality (Mehr & Kanwischer, 2011). ...The History of Human Services Human Services is no new idea, in fact, it existed during the Feudal systems of old England, those needing food, water, clothing and shelter where the responsibility of the Lord of that realm, and the religious sector of that area as well. The level and quality of care provided during those times were determined by the Lord of the realm, but as rural areas evolved into urban areas a new system was needed. Consequently poverty had to be addresses which brought about the poor laws of England bringing into question the morality of poverty. This separated society into the deserving and undeserving poor, which then lead to the deserving receiving intervention and the undeserving shunned and punished by society. In the 1870s The Charity Organization Societies formed by Reverend S, Humphreys grew out of the frustration with the current system's lack of organization and distribution, within the new system they tried to organize so that they could assist with matters of charity and relief by cutting down on the dependence of the welfare and fraud of the system. As society grew so did the problems of society, which lead to the development of what was called Settlement houses which provided a holistic approach to poverty. The money that is meant to get the parents back on their feet and provide for the children is being grossly misused. Many people who are collecting benefit checks, food stamps, and medical benefits are unable to pass a drug test so in essence are not able to work. They seem to be able to afford cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs but run short on bills, diapers and household goods. The dilemma is that on one hand it might be a violation of rights to ask people to be drug tested, but it’s no more intrusive than providing social security #’s, birthdates, and mother’s maiden named, or pay stubs. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, (2008) the 1996 Welfare Reform Act authorized - but did not require - states to impose mandatory drug testing as a prerequisite to receiving state welfare assistance. This is in part to the fact that some think that testing people for drug use is a violation of their civil rights. The big question is should people be allowed to collect benefits from the state if they are misusing the money for drugs? Collecting data for intake and assessment forms is a very important process. It is important because this is the first initial contact the helper and applicant have. The helper will need to verify the problem, set up an appointment, and gather information that ensure the applicant’s case is handled properly. Initial Contact The first initial contact an applicant has with the agency is over the phone. The intake evaluator is the employee or volunteer that gives the first impression to the client of the entire organization. It is a primary role in a case manager’s position. The ability to collect a potential client’s information in an accurate, thorough, yet efficient way is important to ensure that the client’s case is handled competently from the onset of contact. Often, clients are in a crisis. Time is of the essence to ease their stress levels and help them regain control of their lives and environment (Summers, 2012). Communication, not just verbal, but written communication and listening skills are important for the position of an intake evaluator. Dammann, Smith, and Richards (2011) presented material to show how low-income minorities and homeless mother’s perceptions of their 9-13 year-old children’s weight status, diet, and health. The categorical results are clearly presented to include mean, median, t-test, and anova. The information clearly stated the results and bias was limited in the research. In each result a breakdown of what each result presented to include the standard deviation. The table began with a breakdown of descriptive characteristics from gender, race, household characteristics to include size, education, income, employment, living situations, and if the participants participated in food stamps.
