1. GLOBAL BEVERAGE MARKET SCENARIO

The global beverage market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6% over the next five years, to reach a market value of $1,347 billion by 2017. The global beverage industry's rising product demand, not much affected by the currents of global recession, bears testimony to its unyielding growth throughout.
Until recently, the beverages market was divided simply between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. As consumers' tastes grew more sophisticated and demand surged for a variety of beverage options catering to lifestyle changes and health concerns, the beverages industry has responded with a dizzying array of options to choose from.
Products manufactured by the beverage industry include: bottled water, juice, sparkling and still drinks, syrups, nectars, ready-to-drink and regular teas and coffees, dairy drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit powders, and alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine, cider and spirits.
The industry experienced a CAGR of 2.3% for the period spanning 2007-2016. Industry consumption volumes increased with a CAGR of 2.4% between 2006 and 2010, to reach a total of 717,040.5 million litres in 2011.
The soft drinks industry will continue to straddle two different worlds: the mature developed markets where growth has stagnated and developing markets where previously high growth rate has slowed, but still offer the greatest upside. In 1999 Coca-Cola started to encounter its first taste of ethical issues and all the baggage that is associated with it. One of the first challenges that Coca-Cola was confronted with was an environmental problem in some of its foreign markets which lead to health issues. After drinking some Coca-Cola products, around thirty two children in Belgian became ill. Once Coca-Cola ascertained that problem was derived from an inferior batch of carbon dioxide. For whatever reasons, Coca-Cola assumed this wasn’t a real health hazard and procrastinated on mentioning the issue. Coca-Cola would pay a heavy price because once the media learned of the problem; they chastised them for their slow reaction. The negative news became damaging to the Coca-Cola reputation. To make matters worse for Coca-Cola, France claimed that in excess of a hundred people became ill after consuming their products and the country banned all the Coca-Cola products until they could prove that the problem was solved. It was first sold as a patent medicine for five cents a glass at soda fountains, which were popular in the United States at the time due to the belief that carbonated water was good for your health. Pemberton claimed Coca-Cola cured many diseases, including morphine addiction, headache, and impotence. When launched Coca-Cola’s two ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coa leaf and the caffeine from kola nut, leading to the name Coca-Cola. Pemberton called for five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup, a significant dose; in 1891, Candler claimed his formula contained only a tenth of this amount. Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine miiligrams of cocaine per glass, but in 1903 it was removed. After 1904, instead of using fresh leaves, Coca-Cola started using “spent” leaves –leftovers of the cocaine extraction process with cocaine trace elevels left over at a molecular level. Today, Coca-Cola uses as an ingredient a cocaine free extract prepared at a Stepan Company in Maywood, New Jersey. This syrup was first put on the market when he carried the product to Jacobs pharmacy located down the street where it was pronounced “excellent”.
