In 1937, Pablo Picasso created a painting called the “Guernica”, oil on canvas. It was commissioned at the 1937 World Fair by the Republican Spanish government. Pablo Picasso’s paintings all tell a story, or reflect a personal meaning to Picasso. "My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art. In the picture I am painting — which I shall call Guernica — I am expressing my horror of the military caste which is now plundering Spain into an ocean of misery and death." Pablo Picasso When looking at the painting Guernica, I initially focused on the center of the mural. Many of the lines cross or meet near the middle of the work, most of which are diagonal. They start at the two bottom corners and meet toward the middle-top where the vertex is an oil lamp. The diagonals are not defined, but are created with overlapping, with dark and lightness. I noticed a woman on the bottom right she is picking herself up whose head, neck, and arm are along a diagonal. The lines tell a story and the painting is filled with sharp and jagged shapes that are used in positive and negative space. The faces are defined with light and stand out. The painting is done in black and white, there are mid-grays but I would have to say that the main focus is the contrast of the black and white. The painting gives us spatial depth. The overlapping of heads and arms and shapes are interpreted farther away, while others appear closer. Some parts of the subject’s bodies for example look closer than others. The painting has no negative space. The texture is sharp and scratchy with the dramatic contrast of the shapes. They are geometrically precise and the incised lines that are on the faces give them a soft texture. Guernica gives an illusion of movement through out the painting. It is suggested that each…...

Jefferson shows the citizens that because he and others made the document, they should be trusted, because the Constitution made America free from British rule. The Constitution unifies the U.S. also, it only states what need be, not things like divisions of political parties and what not. Diction – Jefferson’s constant use of words like us and we helps bring the U.S. together as a country regardless of whether you are federalist or democratic republican. Macro Article Response 1

...Article Analysis 1: Medicine After Oil In the article, Medicine After Oil, author Daniel Bednarz discusses the excessive usage of oil in the medical industry. America, as a whole, is extremely dependent upon the use of oil and natural gas in many areas. Bednarz makes the point that unless something changes in the healthcare system to reduce energy usage, the scarcity of oil could cause the medical system to collapse. With our medical system already in crisis, “The coming scarcity of fossil fuels, on top of inflationary costs of medicine…and the expenses of treating Baby Boomers,” explains Bednarz, could easily be all that it takes to break down the medical industry unless peak oil is used to recreate a better healthcare system. The issue that the medical industry is ultimately facing is due to the scarcity of oil and natural gas resources. Since scarcity is the imbalance between our desires and resources, we need to realize that our desires for healthcare are not always practical with our available resources. Bednez suggests that a better balance should be found by reconstructing the healthcare system in order to prevent a collapse. Another thing to keep in mind is that for each area in which we are using our resources, we are taking away our ability to use that resource for another application; thus using our resources in the medical field has an opportunity cost. Bednez discusses the fact that the United States spends more money on healthcare than some other......

...The purpose of this response is to determine the difference between direct finance leasing, sales-type leasing or an operating lease for Company ABC. To accomplish this, I will discuss a little background on all of the options and the advantages and disadvantages of a lease. This will aid company ABC in determining the best course of action for acquiring equipment in the future. First, what is a lease? “According to the Federal Accounting Standards Board (FASB), a lease is an agreement conveying the right to use property, plant, and equipment usually for a stated period of time” (Lee, 2003). Essentially a lease is an agreement between a lessee and lessor whereby the lessor “rents” their equipment to the lessee in return for a determined payment or series or payments over an agreed time period. SFAS No. 13 has specified criteria by which lease structures are classified into two basic types of leases, capital and operating leases. If all of the benefits and risk of ownership are transferred to the lessee, the FASB considers it to be a capital lease (Lee, 2003). The capital lease is then further classified in to a sales type lease and direct financing lease. A sales-type lease has a fair value amount different from its carrying amount (Lee, 2003). A sales-type lease can involve any type of property, plant and/or equipment. To be considered a capital lease it must do one of the following; (1) transfer of ownership to lessee, (2) option to purchase the property at a bargain......

...from a team member. It gives an opportunity to evaluate the past performance. I provide positive feedback on the good work and cultivate continued behaviour on that aspect. Similarly I talk about the areas of development. This would help the individual to improve on his/her skills and become an expert. This also helps the individual to take corrective actions to improve on the performance. I try to keep 1-1 discussions every week to keep regular touch point on the performance and check progress on key action plans. I also believe in providing timely feedback. Any delayed feedback is a useless feedback and it doesn’t help the individual to remember the exact activity related to the feedback. I always like to have an actions plan that clearly defines the next steps to accomplish any tasks or developmental areas. And I also have touch points to evaluate the progress on these tasks. Q4 Have I identified potential successors? A4 To be honest, I don’t have any potential successor yet. The reason for this is the relative tenure of my team. Most of the employees under me are less the 1 yr in the organization. And I was myself new to my current department. But, I do see some key people with potentials who could be my successors. And I have started delegating some of my tasks to these key team members. This will give them good exposure to the role that they might have to take in the future. I truly believe that this is key for any organization. Q5 Am I attuned to business......

Hewlett Packard Case Response

...GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT FORUM CASE: GS-4 DATE: 8/10/99 (REV’D 8/01/06) HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY: NETWORK PRINTER DESIGN FOR UNIVERSALITY INTRODUCTION Sarah Donohoe, manufacturing engineering manager of the network laser printer division at Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), listened intently to her colleagues at the project review meeting for the development of their latest new product. With Sarah at the meeting were Jane Schushinski, marketing manager, Leo Linbeck, head of product design, and David Hooper, the controller of the division. The main topic for this meeting was the decision of whether or not to use a universal power supply for the next generation of network laser printer, code-named Rainbow. Previously, printers in the North American and the European market have distinct power supplies and the associated fusers in the main engine of the printer. For North American printers, a 110 volt power supply was installed. For European printers, a 220 volt power supply was added. This printer engine was built by HP’s manufacturing partner in Japan. Due to the long lead time for engine manufacturing, HP had to specify the requirements of the two types of printers at least fourteen weeks ahead. The time that it takes the Japanese partner to commit the printers for shipments, the transportation times and customs clearance totals about four weeks. Hence, if a universal power supply is used, then HP would have the flexibility of postponing the specification of the printer......

After the training sessions the employees began to focus on what they were supposed to do instead of roaming around in various departments. - Authority: There are no teamwork and trust between the workers at all. Martin was authorized by the boss to give orders to the employees. He discussed the issues with the employees and told them what needed to be done. Worldcom Case Response

...Michael Dobe Jr. Bernie Ebbers(left) 5340–Ethics CEO Timothy McCoy 4/6/2015 Scott Sullivan(right) CFO&CPA 1. Two General Accounting employees-Dan Renfroe and Angela Walter-made journal entries in the amount of $150 million and $771 million, respectively, without detailed support. It was noted that this was not out of the ordinary at WorldCom. In your opinion, was this a proper accounting practice? Explain. Normally at the end of each month, Worldcom would estimate the costs of using “Off-net” facilities and connections. Worldcom would accrue these liability estimates. Line cost accrual estimates were very difficult to estimate with precision, especially for international services. When Worldcom learned more about the applicable charges of these Off-net services-when evidence was available-adjusting entries were made to correct the original estimates. As economic conditions worsened, the search for cost savings by Ebbers and Sullivan sparked the abuse of these release of accruals. Apparently Sullivan directed a $150 accrual release without any detailed supporting evidence to do so. This shows the desperate nature of the attempts to restore Line E/R raios. Then again Walter made another large adjusting entry without detailed support. Just because it is not out of the ordinary, does not make it a just practice in accordance with GAAP. In my opinion the $150 accrual release was completely unjustified because it......

...A discouraging post, a threatening text, or an unkind email, Cyber bullying has many forms and must be deleted because it is destroying self-esteem and in some cases leading to suicide. Cyber bullying is mostly prevalent in young people, but also for adults. When a discouraging post is made about someone, it can be seen by an almost limitless number of people. Cyber bullying has the power to destroy ones self-esteem more than traditional bullying because the more people that see, the more heckling that person gets about it. Also, unlike traditional bullying, that post remains for everyone to see and is out there forever, even if the bully deletes it. The importance of maintaining self-esteem is key to a students’ success in the classroom, because if a student feels good about himself then he will be more confident in his work. Its also key in adults because a low self esteem can lower productivity in the workplace. Cyber bullying also has a more serious consequence, suicide. A number of times in the US, when a suicide is reported especially in teens, after investigation it leads to finding numerous posts that degrade or threaten that individual. Its difficult for parents to stay on top of what their children interact with on the Internet, and this allows for the cyber bullying to continue until it’s too late. Everyone has a breaking point, and deleting cyber bullying could help prevent him or her from reaching it. Deleting cyber bullying opens up more space for positive and......

...Response to Client Request 1 Tiffaney Brown ACC/541 November 30, 2015 Kenneth Burton Memorandum To: | Jane Phoenix, supervisor | From: | Tiffaney Brown | Date: | November 30, 2015 | Re: | FASB research results | | | As you requested, I have completed the research on the lease types and lease structure issues on the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) website for the Lone Star Trucking Company. I did specific research on direct financing, sales type, and operating leases. After going over the information I have, I will provide you my recommendation for handling the client’s situation According to the FASB, both the client and the client’s potential new customer need to determine if their arrangement will meet one or more of these four criteria: 1. Transfer of ownership – the potential lease will transfer ownership of the property to the lessee at the end of the designated lease term (fasb.org). The client will have met this criterion if the lease agreement provides for the transfer of title at or shortly after the end of the lease term. Usually, there is a nominal fee that is required by statutory regulation to transfer title. 2. Bargain purchase option – the potential lease will contain a bargain purchase option, where the lessee will have the option to purchase the asset for a percentage less than the fair market value (fasb.org). 3. Lease term - the potential lease term is equal to 75 percent or more of the estimated economic life of...

Case 4 Response

...Module 4 Case Response Consider the Exporting Pollution case in answering the following questions. How important is caring for the environment compared to profit and economic expansion? Are they equally important, or is one of them more important than the other? Who bears the responsibility for setting environmental policy? (Government, Corporations, Citizens, some other party?) Do businesses have a responsibility to protect the environment above what is required by law? Why or why not? Even if economic growth is the cure for poverty, other economists believe that sound environmental policy is necessary for durable growth, or at least that growth and environmental protection may not be incompatible. Comparing profit and economic expansion, caring for the environment is important because environmental damage can undermine economic productivity. It also causes poverty because some people live at a lower level than others. If environmental controls grow slowly, then not many people will be taken out of poverty by economic development. It seems to be that the government; as well as corporations play a major part with the responsibility for setting the environmental policy. It is proven that one in ten of the area’s factory workers had a low blood cell count, a possible precursor to leukemia. Also infant mortality is 10 percent higher there than in the region as a whole, there have nearly been 13,000 cases of respiratory disease were reported in a recent year as well.......

Reading Response 1: Incentives

...Reading Response 1- Incentives I do not believe that children should be given incentives just to do better at something. If you are going to give your child money, make them work for it. Show them the value of a dollar and not the value of a letter grade. Children are required to go to school in order to learn and become educated. If your children want to do something or go out with friends and they need money have them work for it. There are chores they can do around the house like mowing the yard or taking out the trash and for every task done allot each one with a certain dollar amount. Show your child the value of a dollar and what it means to work for it. When I was in school, my father tried to bribe me with money for good grades. For every A I earned I got $20; if I got straight A’s I received $100. I believe the only reason he started this was for my younger sister who was having a hard time in school and he wanted her to focus more on her learning. In the end it did not really work and I ended up having to tutor her through most of her classes as we got older. Even though I was given the money, I would always share it with my sister and we would go to the movies or the arcade and just have fun. My children are now at the age where I can start giving them chores to do to help me out around the house. I have started them off with small things to do, like cleaning their room, taking out the bathroom trash, and helping me load the dishwasher. For......

Response Paper 1-Flood Accounts

...Response Paper: Gilgamesh and Old Testament Question: Is the biblical flood account a modified copy of the Epic of Gilgamesh? The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Old Testament have their similarities as well as differences. The Epic of Gilgamesh is supposedly a mythical tale, while the Old Testament has proven to be true facts. I feel as if the biblical flood account can’t possibly be a modified copy of the Epic of Gilgamesh because while Gilgamesh is a myth, the Old Testament is a proven true story; notable differences between the two accounts and thirdly, because the word of God tells no tales. Even though “Gilgamesh is the first recorded heroic narrative of world literature (Chambers)”, God is the creator of the world so he had the power to actually make the flood occur even if he did get the idea from that tale. Since it is said that our God is an omniscient God or all-knowing; wouldn’t that mean that he in all actuality created Gilgamesh? I hope you can understand where I am trying to go with this argument because I know what I want to say, but it is so complex that it is hard to explain. I guess that is how it goes when it comes to discuss religion and history! Basically, my stance for saying that it is not a modification is because the Epic of Gilgamesh is not as realistic as the biblical account. ‘The gods were frightened by the flood, and retreated, ascending to the heaven of Anu. The gods were cowering like dogs, crouching by the outer wall (Clinton, Irele, , , , and et...
