Research in Motion (Rim)/Blackberry

...Research In Motion (RIM)/BlackBerry The case describes competition in the market for smart phones in North America, and the position of one player, Research In Motion (RIM), a Canadian multinational telecommunications company based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Best known for its line of BlackBerry devices, the company designs, manufactures and markets wireless solutions for the mobile and telecommunications markets. The case allows students to understand the strategic dynamics in platform-based industries in general, and to explore more specifically how a firm that led the industry in 2007 could fall to earth so dramatically four years later. Research in Motion (RIM) began as an electronics and computer science consulting business started by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin in 1984. In 1999, RIM introduced its BlackBerry for corporate e-mail solutions. This Blackberry featured a push system for email delivery where e-mail messages were sent from the user’s personal computer to the Blackberry without dialing in. From 2000 upwards, its revenue skyrocketed and it continued to expand. Within 4 years of inception RIM became the first wireless data technology developer in North America. Business Proposal vs Research

... Formal Research vs Business Proposal Latasha Jenkins MGT 600-1102A-06 Dr. Hal Graff May 1, 2011 Abstract In this paper, I will compare formal research and business proposals and maintain that formal research is academic in nature while a business proposal has a more practical orientation to it. I will also discuss the most important difference between formal research and business proposals is that formal research has no financial implications while financial implications are the most important characteristics of business proposals. I will also point out that the main objective of a business proposal is to identify a need which must be addressed in order to generate either financial savings or greater revenue, while such financial implications are not relevant in formal research. Formal research is not concerned with generating findings that are practicable. I have concluded that formal research generates a wide variety of findings that may be made applicable in a wide variety of contexts. Further, I also noted that the advantage of business proposals is that they contextualize the findings from formal research in an existing organizational structure. Business Proposal vs Formal Research 1. Introduction Formal research basically is a systematic and organized effort to investigate a specific problem or test a hypothesis. The goal here is to find answers to the issues that concern managers at work which is done in a controlled......

...Running head: Business Research Methods I Business Research Methods I Aaron L. Richards, Bill Houston, Christi Lawson, Jeff Smith QNT/TM561 – Research and Statistics for Process Control Dr. Joseph Hamel University of Phoenix June 13, 2011 Abstract Insert Abstract Text Here. Business Research Methods I Introduction Riordan Manufacturing is an industry leading plastic manufacture with facilities located in both North America and China. Riordan has struggled to meet their effectiveness standards for multiple categories and they are looking to implement one of three quality improvement methods to improve process efficiency. If Riordan is to maintain an industry leader, changes must occur in processes across the board in relation to accuracy, availability, quality, timeliness, and cost. However, the first effectiveness measure to be looked at should be the receiving of raw materials from suppliers since every other process thereafter deals with inventory. In addition, the formulation of a solution involves certain steps be taken. Firstly, a process-driven research question should be formulated defining the initial problem. Secondly, a methodology such as Six Sigma, ISO, or Baldridge must be chosen to improve the process. Thirdly, a research design should be created to define any and all variables involved in the solution, and fourthly a sample design should be identified for the collection of data. Process & Methodology In any process......

Case Findings a) Facts Research in Motion (RIM) pioneered the development of the smartphone market in 1998 with the BlackBerry, positioned in government and enterprise target markets. Recognized as the ‘all-in-one’ portable wireless communication device, BlackBerry has gained a competitive edge with its wide portfolio of smartphone products: BlackBerry Curve, Pearl, Tour and Bold series. As Blackberry enters the maturity phase, RIM can’t rely on the sales of current enterprise segments to retain market shares. Therefore in 2008, the BlackBerry Storm series was introduced to cater to the mainstream consumer segments. However, the Storm resulted in low customer satisfaction rates and the Storm2 was launched as an improvement in October 2009. Notably, RIM is the fastest growing company in the world with 14 million BlackBerry users in over 135 countries (case......
