MGT 307 / Organizational Behavior and Group Dynamics
Week Three Lecture

Introduction

Week Three shifts focus from individual behavior within an organization, to group behavior and performance. Today’s organizations use teams to accomplish a variety of tasks. Although teamwork is potentially more effective, the use of teams greatly increases the likelihood and severity of conflict within an organization. This week we will discuss time management techniques, conflict management processes and negotiation strategies, as they relate to individuals working in a team environment. Finally, we will discuss motivation and job satisfaction.

Organizational Groups and Teams

The e-text describes a group as “two or more people who work with one another regularly to achieve common goals” (Schermerhorn, Hunt & Osborn, 2000, 87). Organizations typically group employees into teams. At first glance, it may be hard to distinguish an organizational group from a team. The primary difference is that team members are actually held mutually accountable for delivering specific objectives (Schermerhorn, Hunt & Osborn, 2000, 100). In my organization there are several groups who report to the same chain of command within the hierarchy, yet the people in those groups have completely different responsibilities and objectives. In this instance, their so-called “team” is actually a group, held together only by an organizational chart. This group was formed to achieve administrative or managerial efficiencies, with no intent to improve the working performance of the team members. Conversely, the objective of a high performance team is to improve the effectiveness of each member on the team by achieving synergies between members.

Cross functional project teams in my organization work very effectively. Each member brings a different area of expertise to the project,…...

...Communication Theories XXXXXXXXX COM/310 February 17, 14 XXXXXXX Communication Theories Anthony Robbins said, “The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives” (Robbins (2013)). By analyzing different communication theories of our past, we will be able to understand how the theories can be applied to the future communication process of our social and professional lives. Each theory can give us an insight to not only how we are portrayed, but also as how we might communicate to others without preconceived notions. There have been many theories discussed and introduced over the years, but only three will be discussed in this paper. Each theory, Violations Theory (EVT), Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT), and Organizational Culture Theory will be described, and how the theory applied to some facet of my life. Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT) The communication process includes spoken, written, and non-verbal actions. “The Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT) suggests that people hold expectations about the nonverbal behavior of others” (West & Turner, 2010, p. 130). The theory suggests that proxemic zones and personal space are part of the nonverbal behaviors involved. The personal space is often based on each person own expectations. ...There are millions of companies in the world today. Some of these are small, while some are global and large in nature. The company I have chosen to research is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a multinational corporation specializing in retail that operates a chain of department and warehouse stores. (Wal-Mart. Our Story. http://corporate.walmart.com/our-story. The first type is the wild animals, the loners one would say. They are the ones that you see in school but never wanted to talk or have any interaction with them. Then you have the shoplifting teens, these customers are there just to cause trouble, then you have the dads that don’t normally do the shopping, but have been asked to go get something. They are the ones lost, wondering around the store searching helplessly to find that one item that he has been asked to bring home. Next you have the drug users, the stoners. These customers are there because of the vast variety of muchies available to them at all hours of the night. There is also the bored elderly couples that are just there to walk around the store just to get them out of the house, the middle aged divorce that could only be there to either sulk or look for the next husband. Let’s hope it’s the sulking not the latter. Then of course, you have to have the town gossiper there to see what he/she can find...
