Diversity at Big Bazaar

...age, ethnicity or disability or differences in values, personality and work preferences. Big Bazaar attempts to achieve diversity in the employees by means of selective recruitment. Every store has a set of workers who know the local language and etiquettes. Incidentally, the number of languages known is an important parameter in the selection process, as Mr. X said (We’ll put any name and make it uniform throughout the text. He’s the second person we interviewed BTW). Moreover, the gender ratio in Big Bazaar is also almost equal, given the fact that certain sections of the store, mainly those dealing with women merchandise, have to be managed by women. “We always try to keep the number of men and women near to equal in the stores because they have different skills”, Mr. X said. Also by means of training, the employees develop diverse skill sets according to their intended role in the organization. “For every level there are different trainings. Trainings also differ for different lines of business such as food, clothes, consumer durablesand electronics. This is done to ensure that the diverse skill set matches the job requirement”, Ms. Devayani said. After critical analysis among the group, we reached conclusion on the fact that the diversity policy of Big Bazaar is still in its nascent stage. While almost all MNCs have stringent male to female ratio maintenance policies, for Big Bazaar it is majorly due to the fact that some store areas specialize in women merchandise......

In this way, Modern retailer could offer variety of international products. General analysis of Big Bazzar Big Bazzar was an extremely successful modern retail example in India. Its parent company, Pantaloon Retail India Ltd (PRIL) grew rapidly from $42 in 2000 to about $250 in 2005. Big Bazaar‘s success was due to its “Indian-ness”. The owner of Big Bazzar, Kishoore Biyani, was very good at observing the needs and tastes of Indian consumer. As we mentioned above, most Indian people used to shopping at small neighborhood stores, they may not like to try the modern shopping mode at the beginning. To persuade customer to try Big Bazzar, Bryani and his team incorporated element of these traditional retailing into his stores. For example, Big Bazzar provided the self-serve grains that customer could touch to check the quality as they shopped in the marketplace. It also offered pre-packaged grains to customers who do not like self-serve grains. An important reason that people liked traditional outlet was low-price. To attract customers, Big Bazzar also tried to provide lower price than neighborhood stores. Another reason for the rapid growth of PRIL was that it had a strong management team. Biyani tried to find strong managers and give them neartotal control of their business. 4 Many analysts......
