• What do you see as the central leadership/management challenge in this case?

Adams (Chicago Plant Manager) forecasted that the capacity of the plant would be full in the future. He wanted to ask money to expand the capacity of the plant. However, Mason (Vice president) and Courtney (Midwest district works manager), two his bosses, wanted to move the plant to somewhere, rather than to expand the capacity for the future increasing demand in the product.

• Why do you think that is the central issue? (What case evidence supports your observation?)

Adams, as subordinate, should understand his boss. Through understanding the boss, he could know what pressure they faced, their goal, as well as his strengths and weakness. Thus, the issue resulted form that Adam did not understand his bosses. Moreover, Adams should establish a way to work with the bosses well. However, he just accepted the opinions from the bosses. He did not realize the expectation of his bosses clearly. In addition, he did not express his opinions indefinitely or on the way to intrigue Mason and Courtney’s interest in his points. Therefore, it is why the issue happened.

• What specific suggestion(s) would you give to the key actor(s) in the case to help her/him address the problem(s) you have identified?

The suggestions that I give Adams as following:
• Realize why Mason and Courtney care where the new facility was to go than in how big it should be. Through understanding their expectation, he can find the concerns about the location of the plant and then evaluate the importance between the location and the capacity.
• Find the fit way to communicate his opinions with his bosses. He should find out his bosses’ working style and then analyze the priority of the two projects.
• Based on the bosses’ working style, Adams can use charts or graphs to express his though clearly and…...

Case Analysis This case illustrates the pricing behavior of firms that are oligopoly whose market is characterized by the relative few participating firms offering differentiated or standardized products or services. Such firms in an oligopoly have market power derived from barriers of entry that wards off potential participants. As seen in the case, it is clear that because there are a small number of US Airlines firms competing with each other, their behavior is mutually interdependent – thus, the strategies and decisions by one airline management affect managements of the other airlines whose subsequent decisions then affect the first airline. In the airline industry, such oligopolistic interdependence gives rise to a strategic behavior akin to chess moves- where, for example, what is best for American Airlines depends on what Northwest Airlines does, and what is best for Northwest Airlines depends on what American Airline does. The small number of firms competing with each other in the airline industry means that one airline’s changes in price immediately affects the demand for its competitors. Being an industry that has been constantly adopting new technology and trends, I am of the opinion that leveraging this retail space not only for advertising space (standees, posters, etc.) but also for enhancing the cinema experience, would make profits soar in the long term. By having Bowling centers, Billiards tables and other in-house sporting activities, it lures the young adults and children alike. Introducing a diversified alternate content during the weekdays and off-peak hours would be another mechanism of generating greater profits. The experience of being at a movie theatre is the sole differentiator and maximizing it without adversely affecting the consumer interests should be the goal of exhibitors. The external threats to this industry lies in the very hands that feed it – the studios. Studios are poaching that sacred territory of exclusivity by introducing Video-On-Demand and reducing the gap between movie and DVD releases.
