As the United States primary agency for protecting the health of Americans the Department of Health and Human Services is a perfect agency to analyze in terms of its organizational design. Many internal and external factors have defined and shaped the organization in terms of its size, organizational structure, and processes. Organizational characteristics, also known as internal factors such as the purpose of the organization and the organizational structure help to define how the HHS agency operates. According to the Forestry Department (2000), “External factors are those from the enabling environments which are not under the control of the organization but which affect its structure and development have also influenced the organization” (para. 2). These external factors include economic factors, socio-economic factors, and political-administrative factors. Because of......

Researching Human Services Agencies

...Shakiera Reid-Taylor Professor Milicent Driver HSM/210 February 3, 2014 Checkpoint: Researching Human Service Agencies In the Baltimore City area two of the most popular human service agencies include the Housing Authority of Baltimore City and Department of Social Services. The Housing Authority of Baltimore City focuses on the homeless and low income demographic by providing housing needs to low income families within the inner society to help promote self-sufficiency through providing safe, affordable, and decent housing to its tenants. The Department of Social Services meets various food, income, childcare, and family support needs by serving the elderly, homeless, low income, and disabled demographic. Over time society has influenced both agency’s decisions to meet the needs of the demographic needs by helping to identify what the current socio-economic needs are in each community. The difference I observed in the ways each agencies attempts to meet human needs is that The Department of Social Services offers immediate help, while the Housing Authority does not. Overall each agency is somewhat successful in meeting the needs of its demographic group. Both agencies are federally funded and with the surplus of demand for social service assistance programs offered by each agency are often discontinued or on “freeze’. For example, the Housing Authority has no longer been accepting applications for its housing choice voucher program formerly known as section 8......

Analysis of African American Culture in the Health and Human Services

...1 An Analysis of African American Culture in the Health and Human Services Setting Introduction Communication has often been defined by scholar as the process by which people send messages and generate meanings across various contexts, cultures, and media. The process of communicating does not stop; it occurs cycle after cycle. Whether through verbal or non-verbal messages, the transaction takes place and is inevitable, named by scholars as The Principle of Communication Inevitability. Recognizing that communication will exist, whether intentional or not, it is important to understand the various areas of our life where communication may be vital to the success of the structure. One important area is focused on human welfare—medical, physical, emotionally, mentally, and financially—of children and adults. The method in which health and human service workers communicate with the people whom they serve is one that must be studied, implemented, and constantly improved. Health and human service workers are focused on the quality of life for an individual. They are not present to meet the wants out of life. The ultimate focus is rendering services that are conducive to one’s ability to live. Whether communicating good or bad news, professionals, patients, and clients have mutual responsibility for effective sending and receiving messages. People belong to certain demographics that shape who they are, how they feel, how they learn, their exposure to certain aspects of......

...How has managed care affected service delivery for clients? In your opinion, has it improved client care? In . Also before a client can gain access to services there must be a request from a professional. It can be an initial assessment, a detailed description of the problem, service plan, termination or request for reimbursements. Most times the client most has referral from a physician to receive mental health services. Sometimes a client must wait to see a physician and this puts their problems on hold. Computers are a type of technology that professionals use for information management. Computers and the operations that they preform are very helpful when comes to keeping track of documentations and managing the client’s information. A computer will save the worker time because it allows all the client’s information to be stored in one location that is at the worker’s fingertips. Which give the worker more time to focus on the needs of their client. However it is not a good ideal for the workers to store the information only one device, because issues with accessing can arise. Computers and other electric devices are open to getting attacked by hackers, viruses, or power outage, so the worker will need to have more than one option for keeping the client’s information safe. Human Service helpers should use agency issued firewall backup systems and other programs to ensure that they have access to the client’s information at all times. In my opinion it is always...
