William F. Buckley Jr.’S Canny Cover of James Watt’s Regrettable Remark

...William F. Buckley Jr. was a renowned conservative American political author and commentator. Buckley founded National Review, a conservative political magazine, in 1955. He also hosted nearly 1,500 episodes of Firing Line from 1966 to 1999 and wrote over 50 books. Buckley came to the defense of James G. Watt, the Secretary of the Interior of President Ronald Reagan, after he stated that an advisory body set up by him included a “black, two women, two Jews and a cripple.” Watt was accused of “a panorama of bigotry and hate” by Senator Lowell Welcker and his controversial statement resulted in termination as interior secretary. In Buckley’s “Watt’s tongue works faster than his mind”, he gracefully comes to the defense of Watt and raises several compelling arguments defending Watt’s appalling choice of words. Buckley opens his defense by pointing out that there is no evidence revealing that Watt is anti-black, anti-women, anti-Semitic or anti-handicapped. Undoubtedly, Watt’s choice of words was distasteful. However, Buckley explains some background information that provides some insight as to why Watt said what he said. Buckley explains that in 19th century politics it became increasingly important to associate with different ethnic voting blocs known as a “balanced ticket.” In 20th century politics, the balanced ticket extended to both Jewish and black political associates as well. Later in the century, homosexuals and the handicapped requested direct representation so......

Though the cultural fit is checked in this round the kind of questions asked will not reveal anything about the candidate. Super Saturday: In this round culture fit takes primary importance. In the five sessions of half an hour each, apart from the cultural fit, candidates are also tested for their skills, how they can handle pressure of attending 5 consecutive interviews, love for work, will the candidate accept the offer if given, commitment. 2. Evaluation of hiring process * Assigning a team captain to every school (its alumni) will help in engaging the students with the firm. * With the informational interviews they are able to create awareness among the students about their company. This is beneficial to the company also as it allows students to make an informed decision thereby reducing the potential for bad hiring. * By making the team captain liable to the quality of candidates they bring to Super Saturday, they have eliminated the risk of biasedness. * All interviewers were encouraged to take notes about the candidate during the interview. *......

...1 C h a p t e r 1 I n f o r m a t i o n T o d a y LEARNING TRACK 1: HOW MUCH DOES IT MATTER? In May 2003, Nicholas Carr, an editor at Harvard Business Review, wrote an article titled “IT Doesn’t Matter,” which stirred significant debate in the business community. Carr’s argument in a nutshell is that because every firm can purchase IT in the marketplace, because any advantage obtained by one company can easily be copied by another company, and because IT is now a commodity based on standards (such as the Internet) that all companies can freely use, it is no longer a differentiating factor in organizational performance. Carr argues that no firm can use IT to achieve a strategic edge over its competitors any more than it could with electricity, telephones, or other infrastructure. Therefore, Carr concludes, firms should reduce spending on IT, follow rather than lead IT in their industry, reduce risks by preparing for computer outages and security breaches, and avoid deploying IT in new ways. Most management information system (MIS) experts disagree. As we discuss later in this chapter and subsequent chapters throughout the book, research demonstrates that there is considerable variation in firms’ ability to use IT effectively. Many highly adept firms continually obtain superior returns on their investment in IT, whereas less adept firms do not. Copying innovations of other firms can be devilishly difficult, with much being lost in the translation. There is only...

John F Kennedy

Men hvad opnår Kennedy i virkeligheden? Abstract in this paper, i am going to analyze and interpret the conflicts revolving the foreign policy in America during the period John F. Kennedy was president. I am also going to give a short account of John f. Kennedys way to becoming President. I have researched the aspects of the cold war revolving John F. Kennedy and his part in it, during the time period of 1961-1963. By doing that I can analyze his actions and choices, and find out how he differs from his predecessor. Measuring G

...Acceleration of gravity, g Introduction In this experiment you will be measuring the acceleration of gravity using a pendulum like apparatus. The value of g is an important issue as it forms the basis for many mathematical theories and allows for life to exist on this planet. If we keep in contact with the Earth, ordinary tasks will be very difficult. Establishing due value for the acceleration of gravity allows to utilise many of theories that could allow us to solve the big problems. Everyday life would be difficult if we did not have gravity, we would be constant free fall and stopping us to function as a society. The concept of zero gravity can be seen on the International Space Station (ISS), however theoretically they should be not experiencing as they as still in the Earth's gravity field however as the constantly circling the Earth to stay above the surface this causes a state of free fall allowing for the zero gravity to occur in the ISS. You will be using this setup to calculate the acceleration due to gravity using pendulum motion. The investigation is designed to demonstrate: • Air friction • Pendulum motion • Acceleration due to gravity Historical Context: Gravity has been long-known concept, first conceived Isaac Newton with the famous moment of the apple dropping on his head. With that remarkable accident, he derived the law of universal gravitational attraction. F =G ( m1 m2 ) d 2 F = Attraction force between two objects (N) G = Universal......

Part a Practise Question How Far Do Sources F and G Agree About the Importance of Mounting a Militant Campaign?

...13/10/14 Part A Practise Question How far do Sources F and G agree about the importance of mounting a militant campaign? In the late 19th century, the WSPU (suffragettes) adopted a militant campaign in place of their once harmless and peaceful campaign for enfranchising women. The objective of this essay is to explore the importance of mounting a militant campaign in order for women to gain the vote, by comparing source F and G in how much they agree and disagree in the importance of forming militant campaign. Firstly, source F, written by Ray Strachey, states that the militant ways Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney used during the events in Manchester meant that “hundreds” of people who had never thought about women’s suffrage before, “began to consider it”. This goes to show that the fact that these bold and never seen before methods led to sparked attention by the public and gained interest in what the WSPU were trying to achieve. Source G reinforces source F’s point, as it implies that militancy would be the only way to promote women’s suffrage by the audacious and jeopardous acts. It reads “non-militant methods had failed” demonstrating that people weren’t listening to their leaflets and posters and they needed a new way to try and get “suffrage up the agenda” again agreeing with source F as they knew these dangerous and ungoverned methods would receive the attention their cause needed to succeed. These extracts agree in the sense that militancy is important......

...Sons of Guadalupe. Don’t eat the bear Sometime before its eighteenth century settlement by Spanish priests and pobladores, California had been referred to as El Rincon del Mundo (the edge of the world). To the Spanish mind of the age it was truly out there at the edge of their known world. It was too far north from Mexico and the rest of Spain’s vast empire. Some thought it might be an island called California inhabited by women and ruled by a queen called Calafia. California’s name itself was the fruit of the imagination of a Spanish novelist, Garci Ordoñez de Montalvo. He envisioned this California as a place of unimaginable mystery and fantastic visions maybe even paradise itself. Guadalupe, like the southwest itself, has changed hands a number of times: first the Chumash Indians settled and inhabited the area, then the Spanish, then the Mexicans. The United States ultimately forced Mexico to surrender California and the present-day southwestern region through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The vitality of the imagination, its revolving door of ethnicities, the resiliencies of the residents and its return to its essential Mexican roots have enhanced its fundamental quality across the years. Presumably the town takes its name from the patron saint of Mexico: La Virgen de Guadalupe, or from an 1843 (or 1840) Mexican land grant called Rancho de Guadalupe, originally deeded to the original Mexican residents, Teodoro Arrellanes and Diego Olivera. Arellanes......

I’ve done a lot of business with Orleans Elevator in Bloomington over the years, but just wonder how long this will continue. I have much invested in my manufacturing plant located right next to their plant, but now that United Technologies [the parent company of Orleans] is all into this FreeMarkets Internet purchasing system, I just wonder how long they are going to be interested in keeping me in the supply chain loop. It’s been a good business over the past few years. I was in the right place at the right time when Orleans got into just-in-time and lean manufacturing in the late 1980s. Initially I was just making the control panels for the elevators. It was interesting to walk into a new building, get on the elevator, and see my company’s handiwork in that beautiful stainless steel panel that houses the buttons for the floors on the building. I could take a lot of pride in the craftsmanship even though it was largely a technology thing. That new numerically controlled machine tool that I purchased in 1985 made making the holes in those custom panels easy. We are still making beautiful panels. Since that time, my company has gotten a lot of other business from Orleans. We now make all kinds of special......
