The day had come, game day. Although we hadn’t made the playoffs it was still a big game since it was the last game of the season as well as me and many teammates last time playing together. As the bell rung to dismiss my class I could feel the butterflies in my stomach start to grow, nervous and anxious to play as I always was even though the game didn’t start for another 5 hours. I went on about my day as I normally would, went home and took a nap.
After waking up and getting ready for the game I was finally back at school which is when I really began to feel the pressure. It was as if my heart was hanging by a thread, ready to drop into my stomach and join what felt like a million butterflies. With every step I took the gymnasium only grew in size, making me more nervous. We were all walking silently, my teammates and I, mentally preparing ourselves for what was about to take place. As we reached the entrance and took our first steps inside, all that was happening overcame me. The smell of popcorn from the concession stand, the sound of sneakers squeaking on the polished hardwood floors, bursts of excitement from the crowd. “We did it. We actually made it.” Was the only thing running through my mind.
After a solid 5 minutes of walking we finally made it to our changing room, the sound of bags hitting the floor and zippers filled the quiet room. Coach came in followed by our assistant coach, and walked up to the front of the room. We all were expecting just a quick briefing, Coach liked to get to the point so he threw us off by telling us to take a seat. Coach sat down and laid his head in his hands, after about a minute of him sitting there motionless I turned and looked quizzically at my captains. I heard his weight shift in the chair, followed by a long sigh and when I turned around I was shocked to see Coach staring at us. He said, “Whatever happens on…...

Why Did World War I Last so Long?

...Why did World War I last so long? The First World War began on July 1914 and lasted till the armistice call from Germany in November 1918. World War or the Great War involved global powers assembled in two opposing alliances: at the beginning of the war, The Allies consisted of United Kingdom, France and Russia and were later joined among others by the USA. Against Allies stood alliance called Central powers, which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy (which fought for Allies then) later joined by Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. Both Allies and Central powers expected the war to be very short and quick as for being regional (between Austria-Hungary and Serbia). The common belief in United Kingdom in the year 1914 was the war would last “till Christmas” (under half year). The Germany foresaw the war to last similarly short as they put their stakes on short and no diversionary war according to Schlieffen Plan. The most significant factors in term of prolonging the war were the failure of Schlieffen Plan together with the determined attitude of both camps to win. This resulted in the tactical stalemate of trench warfare, which again contributed to the length of the war. All factors mentioned above were essential in prolonging the war. First of all, Germany gambled on a quick victory with the Schlieffen Plan that did not pay off and resulted in the trench warfare. Schlieffen Plan was a warfare strategy whose main aim was not to create diversionary......

...formal hypothesis to justify all comparisons and statistical procedures you might use. For instance, it is only when you start doing exploratory analysis of your data that you realize that gender is an influencing factor. You do not have to back up and write a hypothesis that addresses this finding. In fact, it is better in most cases to not do this. You can report any statistical findings you feel are relevant, whether or not you have a hypothesis that addressed them. The final criterion listed above warrants additional mention. A good hypothesis is not only testable, that is, something you can actually test for in your study, but is must also be falsifiable. It is tempting to ignore this requirement, especially as a new researcher. We want so badly to find great things, and for our study to turn out exactly as we expect it to, that we tend to ignore the possibility that we don’t know everything and that no prediction is failsafe when it comes to humans. Try to keep in mind that all research is relevant. Whether or not your findings are what you expect, you will find something. Believe it or not, failing to find group differences can be just as important as finding expected group differences. In fact, studies that return results in opposition to what we were hoping for, or believed would logically occur, often lead to many more great studies than we could have hoped for. After all, it could be great for the findings of your current research to act as a guiding principal to......

Christian Thought

...Reflection Paper for Introduction to Christian Thought Theology 104 Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx L33333333 March 5, 2012 Liberty University I. Introduction To say, “I am a Christian” has so many meanings in this day and age. To most people it means that they believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for their sins. To a true Christian it means the aforesaid statement as well as the desire to know God through a personal relationship. The most crucial part of being a Christian is to nurture and cultivate that special bond with God and use one’s personal testimony to further the acceptance of Christ by as many people as possible. In order to communicate effectively, one must know that Jesus is God and be able to convey how He is working their lives. One can use his/her God-given skillsets in many different facets to promote His purpose through the church and the community. Upon one’s earthly demise, the ultimate goal is to hear, “Well done, my faithful and loyal servant” (Matthew 23:23). II. Did Jesus claim to be God? Jesus claims to be God numerous times within the Bible. Jesus referred to Himself as “I AM” in multiple verses in scripture as well as key quotes, such as, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35) and “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). For people to understand that Jesus is God, one has to recognize why God would come to this earth in human form. In the......

Something I Thought I Could Never Do

...Something I thought I could never do “You can’t do this. You are not strong enough. Do it again, and again. Again, until it is perfect, for me, not anyone else. Become stronger, show everyone they were wrong!” I repeatedly say this in my head until I can finally pull myself together to prove what I have. Someone once told me that I could not do what those other girls could, that they were better than I was, that it will take a long time for me to become as good as they are. Moreover, you know what I did. I had proved them all wrong. I proved them wrong with anger, fear and courage. I was ready to become great! My head was pounding. My heart was pumping. My ears were raging with steam. My eyes were blood shot red. I had felt every emotion of anger that night. So many familiar, and unfamiliar faces of athletes who were turning my hopes into nightmares only to satisfy their hunger of feeling in control just because they are better than I am. “I wouldn’t try that trick, you don’t have the skill composition for this high level of skill”, one girl told me. “Watch me” I spat. More and more girls kept coming at me with discouraging words and I did nothing but stand my ground and use my words like a bullet to think I am achieving some kind of control for myself. I stood there with the thoughts of their comments repeatedly in my head, still with rage coming from within me. With everything I had, I ran across the blue mat, left foot propped up, and arms next to......

Thoughts on Being Asked “How Do I Get Into Infosec?”

...So You Want To Get Into INFOSEC Huh? I got a request through a friend for a friend of that friends kid to talk to him about how to get into INFOSEC the other day. Now usually I am a curmudgeon (as you all know and love) and am loathe to be some sort of big brother of INFOSEC to anyone but in this case I said ok cuz I am just that nice. After some email wrangling we finally got together today (scant minutes ago actually) and now feel an obligatory blog post on the subject of getting into the business coming on …And there it is …Feel the burn… So after agreeing to a time to meet I began to wonder just what I would say to this kid as to how to get into the business. For that matter I really wondered if I should encourage him at all to get into INFOSEC in the first place. My mind started to ponder why I was in it still and just how if at all it was rewarding given all that I have seen and still deal with on a daily basis. Often times my daily job sends me in to apoplectic fits that you all see in my blog posts and on twitter screeds of 140 characters at a clip so I imagine all of you out there might not think that I enjoy my work on average. On the whole though I would say that I do enjoy my work but I would caution anyone looking to get into this business to take a deep look at their abilities and their coping mechanisms before they took the plunge. My conversation with this guy (in his 30′s) covered a range of things but I mainly focused on just how technical he was if at......

I Wrote This When I Was Young, so Don't Judge Me

...away. That was a sad day, yes it was. I cried. You can ask my poppa about how I cried for 2 weeks straight. Oh, how I cried. Maybe I’m getting’ way, way ahead of my-self. My name Loretta, too, and ain’t nobody tellin’ me my name is nothin else. That is not who I is! Anyway, I live on some plantation in northern Carolina and these parts ain’t kind to ya either. I work muh butt off to keep it from that mean, nasty, leather strip. I mean, I work hard- I don’t quit either. My poppa was born into slavery and his great-great grandpappy was a hick straight from the sticks. He mad at the white folks- but also his ancestors fer not fightin’ back. We do a lot of ‘hardships’ to remain happy, or so my granny used to say when I was a young’un. My life as a slave was not one u might expect. Now, if you readin’ this, I’m most likely off living somewhere in the north. Now, that is the adventure of my life I don’t regret it one bit. Here’s how the story of a lifetime unfolds… It all started when a strange knock appeared on our door. Naturally, I ran to a small hole just big enough for me that my father had dug and covered the top with a blanket. I did this for protection against bad people. But it wasn’t anybody! So, I waited and waited. Plantation owners were known to play tricks on us. But what had happened was so much more. My friend Husha from church called my name. I perked my head up- to make sure that it wasn’t a trick. When I was reassured, I walked up to her and greeted her. She......

Thoughts

...the boy who breathes ashes and dust, whose eyes contain the most beautiful sunset. Whose smile beams like the moon kissing the skies at cold nights. Whose autumn hair dances waltz in the spring wind. Whose fingers are pointed and long, hand soft as a cotton that I wish to hold forever. The stars and you are the same. You are beautiful but only at a distance. And kissed me like sending a thousand lightning on my spine. I tasted salt in your mouth as if you drank the waters of the ocean; good thing you didn’t drown. My skin had blood marks on because you held me so tight that winter night. But that didn’t matter because I love you. And I mean it. -End- It’s a little bit funny how I cut fringes out of my long hair And I would feel very sad every time I look at the mirror. Like I was carry kettle bells with each of my finger I thought every girl in school was perfect and not fat And I curse myself for not being alike. I wasn’t good with words spoken or written, and I was ashamed of myself every time I stood in front to say , perhaps stutter. I look above with a beaten heart. The stars at night became my mother. My father was the moon. Or so I thought. As days went by, I became even sadder. I kept on dropping hints Of sadness and they fall like nothing. As nobody noticed....

Explication of “You Thought I Was That Type” by Anna Akhmatova

...Sharetta Moore English 101 Professor Covington 24 March 2014 Explication of “You Thought I was That Type” by Anna Akhmatova In the literary poem, “You Thought I was That Type” by Anna Akhmatova, she showed no feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering and misfortunes of others. There was a stunning woman that didn’t have any kindness or forgiveness that was shown especially to somebody a person had power over; but knowing how to survive in the real world and being an individual that had the necessary emotional qualities to deal with stress, grief, loss, risk, and other difficulties. The reader is able to see that something throughout the marriage wasn’t good by interpreting line 12 "And by the fire and smoke of our nights", which shows they didn’t have peaceful nights. In line one “You thought I was that type”, the speaker is saying that someone took the wrong perception of her character by basing it off of things that wasn’t true ending up taking her for someone she really wasn’t. In line two “that you could forget me”, the speaker is saying that they couldn’t ever forget her since they made up their own view of what role she played in their life. In line three “and that I’d plead and weep and throw myself”, the speaker is saying that she tried to do everything she could think of to make herself be the one for this person but nothing would work so in result she was in sorrow. In line four, “under the hooves of a bay mare”, the speaker is saying......

1. Do You Believe That People Have an Unconscious Mind? If so, How Does It Affect Thoughts, Feelings, and Behavior?

...have an unconscious mind? If so, how does it affect thoughts, feelings, and behavior? Yes I do believe that people have an unconscious mind. The unconscious mind might be defined as part of the mind gives rise to a collection of mental occurrences that manifest in our mind but which are not aware of at the time of their occurrences. These occurrences include unconscious feelings, unconscious or automatic skills, unnoticed perceptions, unconscious thoughts, unconscious habits and automatic reactions, secret phobias and hidden desires. It also controls certain roles in our body like our breathing and our heart function. A familiar example of the unconscious mind is the phenomenon where one thinks about some problem, cannot find a solution but wakes up one morning with a new idea that unlocks the problem. 2. Do you believe that you are free of prejudice? After reading this chapter, which of the many factors that cause prejudice do you think is most important to change? No. I don’t think anyone is. It is a human nature , even though is not always useful to us to be judgmental to look down on others, as if we are so much better, it only creates division between people. I think I am less prejudice that some because of the way my parents raised me. I do not remember my parents ever saying a word against another race or nationality. I tried not to pass judgment or any kind of assumptions about someone or something without having the knowledge to do so with a guaranteed......

...undoubtedly stirred my emotions and I admit that I did cry several times. I think that this was the author's objective; this is an appeal to emotion, one of the fallacies of propaganda. Propaganda is a message or an idea that persuades the audience to change their perspectives in one way or another. There are many faces of propaganda but this to my knowledge is one that is easy to recognize. I ‘m not saying I didn't like The Kite Runner, the author had me after the first chapter and then I couldn't put it down. However I am naïve when it comes to politics and propaganda, so at first I didn't even consider this book a form of persuasion. But as I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that The Kite Runner is just that. There are many oversimplifications and stereotypes, even if they may be from a reality-based ideology. The ethnic group of the Hazara and the Pashtun is not entirely developed. Amir was always referred to as a Pashtun but the background of the Pashtun isn't fully touched upon. The narrator only focuses on the Mongolian-like physical features of the Hazara's, and because of this diversity, they are considered a more lowly class than Pashtuns. They are commonly viewed as an outsider; only being fully accepted into society to be servants for wealthy Pashtuns like Amir, and his Baba. Assef, the hated and much renowned bully in Kabul who just happens to worship Hitler and his beliefs of ethnic-cleansing, is a stereotype. I loathed him when reading this novel,...

...“Describe the meaning of the shadows in the analogy of the cave.” The analogy of the cave is what Plato used to portray his idea of the World of Forms more clearly. In it, he tells us to imagine that there are a group of prisoners who have been held in a cave all their lives, and have never left it or had any experience of the outside world. They are all chained facing a wall, so that they can never see the cave’s entrance. At the entrance of the cave, there is a fire, and whenever someone or something passes that fire, it casts a shadow onto the wall the prisoners are facing. The prisoners think that the shadows are reality. But one day, a prisoner breaks free and rushes outside the cave. He sees the fire, and people, animals and other things. Here, he has discovered the real world and for the first time realizes that it is so much more than the cave, the shadows and everything else seen previously. This man is so overwhelmed by this new reality that he has found that he goes back into the cave, to tell the other prisoners what they are missing out on. However, the rest of the prisoners do not believe him, and in fact become angry at the man, because they believe that the shadows are reality. The outside world is a depiction of Plato’s world of forms. He believed that the World of Forms was the true reality that we will never accept until we see it for ourselves. The cave represents the physical world in which we live. This “cave” that we live in makes us somewhat......

I Have Always Thought a Godly Person Was

...I have always thought a Godly person was someone who could quote scripture verbatim, attended church every Sunday and listen to Christian music and many other things. I found when I read the 6th chapter I was all wrong. Dr. Gutierrez enlightened me that a true godly person must be self-disciplined in their attitude, habits and learns about God’s word through church or biblical training. Dr. Gutierrez also said “a godly person is one who takes the truth about God’s Word and consistently lives it each day from the heart and obey it.” In chapter 3, I was intrigued by the parables in this chapter they all had the message of seek, find and rejoice. The parable about the lost sheep takes me back to when my life was full of sin. I knew that I was living wrong however; I didn’t want to let that life go. One day Jesus my Sheppard found me a lost sheep and brought me back to the flock. That day I rejoiced because I was made a new man in Christ. The six –step digression describes a spiritually sick person. In Ephesians 4:18 says “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of ignorance that is in them due to hardening of their hearts”. Dr Gutierrez said that most people don’t realize they are on this path until the third, fourth, or fifth step. I have been down this path back sliding into sin and often time wanted to make myself believe that it was alright. The first step tells us as believers we should acknowledge where our sin is taking us and...
